ATF: 68,000 Guns Recovered in Mexico Trace to US
Epoch Times ^ | April 26, 2012 | Alex Johnston

Mexican authorities have recovered around 68,000 guns that traced back to the United States in the past five years, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) said on Thursday.

“Since 2007, trace data shows a trend in recovered and submitted crime guns from Mexico shifting from pistols and revolvers to rifles,” the ATF said in a statement.

The agency added that reports from officials in Mexico show “certain types of rifles, such as the AK and AR variants with detachable magazines, are used more frequently to commit violent crime by drug trafficking organizations.”

The ATF said it was able to trace back 68,000 of more than 99,000 guns that were submitted by Mexican authorities.

Mexican officials in the past have complained that drug cartels often wind up with U.S.-sourced guns in their bloody wars against each other and the army.

At least 47,000 people have been killed in the conflict since President Felipe Calderon directed the army to act against cartels in 2006.

How many of these ‘American weapons’ are U.S. military arms provided to the Mexican armed forces as part of our multi-billion dollar military assistance programs?.....

EXCELLENT POINT!

Most of the guns in Mexico come in from other than the US, because they are much cheaper.

Plus, the Mexican government does not "submit" all the guns it finds to the BATFE, only the ones it suspects came from the US, so of course a high percentage of those guns will be from the US.

The relevant factor, the percentage of guns from the US of the total guns the Mexican government collected, is nowhere to be found in the article.

Agitprop indeed. Soon the Administration will put the UN Small Arms Treaty up for a vote.

This is what F&F was all about.

And there's the strategy. They'll say Bush did it too.

Media providing cover for “Fast and furious”.

Just imagine what the MSM would do if a Republican president got caught shipping guns across the boarder. They'd have mobs storming the White House by now.

Fast and Furious proves, without question, the main stream medias deadly bias.

Who cares. If Mexico weren't a cesspool of corrupt police, corrupt bureaucrats, and criminals then there wouldn't be any shootings. It's criminals who commit the crimes - not guns.

It's like shipping and distributing a truck load of arms into inner city Chicago. It's just something you shouldn't do. It wouldn't turn out well for innocent people who may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the Fast and Furious case, that would be the boarder control agents guarding our boarder.

Not directed at you but does anyone know if Mexico let that guy and his semi truck full of ammo that accidentally went into Mexico back in the US?

It's just something you shouldn't do.

I don't agree. I think anyone who isn't in jail or on parole should be able to buy a gun if they want one. Mexicans too. If you misuse it go to jail or worse, but enough of this prior restraint.

The Founding Fathers would be horrified at the massive police state we have allowed to be created.

Imagine trying to tell THEM what kind of lighting they have to use, or where they're allowed to talk about the Bible. Or that they have to get government permission to build another little shed on their property! Imagine telling THEM they're no longer allowed to hunt for food or fish without government permission, a document, and a fee that would cost them more than a weeks worth of groceries !! Picture them being told they MUST allow homos (who they gave the death penalty) special rights and privileges above the normal family. Think about how they'd react if the government stole half their wages at the point of a gun - and then used their wages to buy power and privilege for themselves by giving it away to freeloaders and foreigners!

I think our founding fathers would be fighting a war of Independence. They'd be demanding their God given right to be free.

Oh, I agree. Like I said, though, it's like sending a truck load of arms into inner city Chicago and just passing them out like candy. Nothing good could come from that. (How many honest, upright American citizens are you going to find in inner city Chicago? The place is more like a criminal enterprise.)

The US govt gave and sold a boatload of weapons to the Mexican Federales over at least a 20 year period to bolster the Mexican military. They have a high rate of desertion and when they go over the fence the soldiers take every piece of gear they have. A good number of these folks have joined the drug cartels and they are using these weapons. Of course the BATFE isn’t going to tell you that.

Gun ownership in Canada is very common. Non US residents are prohibited from possessing firearms and/or ammunition while in the US unless they obtain a waiver.

If there was a huge cache of guns being smuggled into Mexico then Holder's fingerprints must be all over them.

When profiteers used to get caught smuggling guns to the American Indians, they'd go to jail or most likely hang.

When incompetent, leftwing race pimps do it, they get promoted to head the DOJ.

>it’s amazing they’ve been able to keep the wraps on that data for so long.

I truly do not understand why our so called majority in the US House does not make this a priority this election season.

It is an easily understood crime that the voting sheep need waved under their noses. There is enough provable 0bama crimes
that we should be making hay by the square mile.

Gun ownership in Canada is very common.

And yet the majority of canadian voters repeatedly support anti-gun politicians. And there is of course the failed farcial and very expensive long gun registry.

That long gun registry is no longer. Our conservative government killed it. A substantial majority of Canadians wanted it gone!
