NAACP holds LA rally on violence against black youth; Trayvon Martin's family attends

A rally in the Crenshaw district is bringing together prominent black leaders, the family of Trayvon Martin and plenty of celebrities to keep the public’s attention on the recent killings of young black men.

The Los Angeles chapter of the NAACP is hosting the family of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin at a rally at a South L.A. church. They're joined by the reverends Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson — and they're joined by celebrities Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan and Magic Johnson.

The Martins were the first to come out to the audience’s applause, holding signs which displayed the now-famous picture of Trayvon Martin staring straight into a camera with his hoodie on.

It’s the two-month anniversary of Trayvon Martin’s shooting by a neighborhood watch commander, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman has now been charged with second degree murder and is out on bail.

Aside from Martin’s shooting, the organizers wanted to call attention to and demand justice for the killings of other young black men since last year. That list starts with Oscar Grant in Oakland, and goes on to include Kendrec McDade in Pasadena and Earl Anthony Dunn in Compton.

No go on their plan to whip up the unwashed masses on this non-issue. Even the local media kept playing up the Rodney King riots, linking to the Trayvon case. So very transparent are these race-mongers and the complicit racist media.

Too bad for them that people even in the "Crenshaw" district are working their asses off trying to support their families. Sometimes surviving is the priority - an under-reported story these days in Obamaville.

Zimmerman was named the captain of the neighborhood watch team. That means he coordinated meetings and crime data for the neighbors use in their watching duties. Awareness of the crimes, locations and descriptions of perps is key to effective neighborhood watch groups.

Right, and I think captain is a reasonable title for his position. But whoever wrote the article calls him a "commander", which strikes me as slightly overblown, and which IMO subtly implies hypervigilance. It reminds me of how they use the term "gated community" to sneak a connotation of privileged white separatism into the story.

These rallies are just a prelude to what is going to happen when GZ walks.

They have this nonsense “blame deflection” rallies in St. Louis from time to time. They march a little bit, release some balloons, make garish memorials with stuffed animals tied on a street light next to where the decedant lay, and four blocks over, it’s the ever present sound of someone burning through a magazine.

This is going on in every major and minor city in the US.

You're right. The media doesn't have an agenda. “Gated community” insinuates nothing that helps advance their spin on the story. It's just a neutral term like white hispanic. Thanks for straightening me out.
