On good-bye tour, Gingrich touts ability to be Romney surrogate

By NBC's Andrew Rafferty

MOORESVILLE, NC -- Even though his presidential campaign "will go bye-bye," Newt Gingrich on Thursday said he and his wife plan to campaign through the fall to help presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.

"I'm going to look at how I can be helpful, because I suspect people will still show up to hear me," Gingrich told voters at luncheon here. "Callista and I are going to campaign through October."

Though today, just 25 people attended the midday event here, leaving a roomful of empty chairs. Some of those seats were taken by Secret Service, an area the campaign has taken heat for recently because of the thousands of dollars the protection was costing taxpayers, even Gingrich he had become more of a sideshow than serious contender for the GOP nomination.

After losing the Deleware primary on Tuesday, the latest in a long string of electoral defeats, the former Speaker of the House acknowledged he will end his campaign next week. He will continue with his packed schedule through North Carolina, saying he felt an obligation to fulfill previous commitments here.

"The campaign will go bye-bye, but I'll be a citizen," Gingrich told a supporter asking about the candidate's future. "I've been an active citizen since I was 15."....

>> I am afraid you know nothing of the South and the bible belt. God comes first, then country. They wont vote for Obama ... but they will stay home before they vote for a Mormon, that’s just the way it is. <<

Ernest Istook is a Mormon and he had no problem winning election after election in Oklahoma for over a decade. It may have something to do with the fact he's not a RINO.

I would just like to point out to all of those people who claimed that Rick Santorum was a stalking horse for Romney...

Newt has now endorsed Romney.

Santorum has not.

lol

There is a massive difference between a house seat and state wide office.

with the proper gerrymandering anyone can be elected to the house.

I watched Santorum not endorse Romney, it was painful. Piers Morgan is a total a-hole.

It's Oklahoma, the state is about 80% conservative Republican so the only gerrymandering they'd be doing is if they wanted to create a liberal Democrat district. Istook's beliefs were well in line with the "average" Oklaholma voter.

They certainly couldn't "gerrymander" it favor Mormons, since Mormons are about 1% of the population in OK. I'd be shocked if they were able to create a district that was over 5% Mormon. Istook won his elections overwhelmingly, which means that southern "bible beliving Christians" in the bible belt overwhelmingly voted for Istook, whether you like it or not.

I suppose I could bring up Paula Hawkins, who is definitely a Mormon and won statewide office in the south (She was U.S. Senator from Florida for 6 years), but no doubt you'll have some excuse like "Florida doesn't count as the south"

The fact is, non-Christians have won handily in the bible belt before, and they will again. Maybe you wouldn't, but plenty of folks would rather vote for a conservative Jew who doesn't believe in Jesus, than a socialist "Christian" who does. The reason why there haven't been many Mormons elected to office in the south is the same reason there aren't many Mormons elected to office up north in the great lakes area: we don't have many. When they're less than 1% of the population, there's not going to be many running for statewide positions.

The reason why Romney is having problems in the south is his liberal record, not his religion. When you keep yapping about his religious afflilation, you just give the mainstream media excuses to claim that GOP "bigotry" caused Romney to do poorly instead of the fact he's a RINO that conservatives don't trust.

If anything, the only religious problem Romney has is that he's not Mormon ENOUGH. Most Mormons are staunch social conservatives and find common ground with conservative Catholics and protestants on culture issues like abortion. Romney's an exception to the rule. IF a conservative Mormon like Jason Chaffetz was running, he'd win handily in the bible belt just like Istook did. Maybe you wouldn't vote for him, but I'd venture to say you'd be in the minority because I know most southern conservatives happily backed the guy over Chris Cannon.

I am just telling you what I am hearing on the ground here in Texas.

People that I have never heard say a single bad word about anyone in their whole lives (think little old church lady, even happy go lucky hippie types) whispering about Romney being a “Mormon”.

This IS an issue. And it's no more bigoted than Mormons voting 95%+ for Romney in the primary.

LOL what a silly post. Sorry but I guess the good people of Istook’s district care more about policy than his religion.

I was for Santorum and agree he’s a superior conservative to Gingrich.

But he will probably endorse Romney too, everyone will. Hilarious that Newt did it first though.

Conservatives staying home is an issue in swing states like Ohio and Virginia it doesn’t put Republican states “in play”.

Obama has ZERO chance of winning Texas, Arizona (two polls show a close race there, bull) or any state like that. ZERO. Texas will not be close. This is election is about the hated scum Obama, not Romney.

I'm a conservative and didn't stay home but just voted for NEWT! Did you?

This is election is about the hated scum Obama, not Romney.

WRONG. This is a primary to see who goes against Obama! TRY LIVING IN THE PRESENT. They are both hated scum but Obama wasn't on the ballot - even though Romney was on the ballot, it's not a democratic primary.

I voted for Santorum, this being in late March. Doesn’t matter now, Glove Shamney won, you’re living in a dreamland if you think it’s not over.

And Newt who’s been done since losing Florida staying in and splitting the conservative vote is a major reason why it’s over.

Your vote goes to Mitt just according to their plan.

Newt didn’t split any conservative vote - because he was the ONLY conservative in the race to win (minus Perry). Anyone else was in it to prevent Newt from winning which was Mitt’s careful designed plan since ‘08.

If you don’t know that you were leaving in a dream world that was designed to dupe you and favor Mitt.

He couldn’t win any other way unless he duped a majority of voters through using those candidates whom he bought off to sucker in those living in a dream and clueless enough not to be able to see through their scam. The only one he couldn’t buy off was Perry and Newt. POS Romney doing what cr*p does - smells up the whole place and only attracts flies.

Conservatives flush cr*p away - flies hang around it.

A total bogus post with not one shred of evidence to support any of those claims. Not surprised - mittbots never do - just spreaders of propaganda, pawns of mitt.

If you want proof that Santorum was the viable conservative and not Gingrich try looking up the election results. Count how many states Newt did better than Rick in. That’s elementary school math.

And if you want proof Glove is gonna be the nominee check out the title of this thread. DUH! Rick and Newt have bowed out.

And you’re lucky you’re hiding behind a computer screen in an unknown state calling me a “mittbot” you blackguard, I agree with you that he’s a piece of crap but that doesn’t change the fact that he will be the GOP nominee. I ain’t asking anyone to support him. I’d still vote against him if my state hadn’t had it’s primary yet and would urge others to do the same but with Ron Paul as his only opponent now he’s gonna get all the rest whether anyone likes it or not.

If you think Glove and the Kenyan are the same you can vote Virgil Goode in November, he’ll be on the ballot, Gingrich won’t.

If your next reply is more hostile crap please don’t hit send, I’d just as soon never “converse” with you again.

I hope he doesn’t go out of his way to campaign for Romney.

I don’t think that’s necessary AT ALL.

And why is it not necessary? Is it certain that Romney will win? Is it impossible that he will? I don't get it.

Not exactly OT, but sorta — for those of us in states whose primaries haven’t been held yet, we’re disenfranchised and not given the chance to make any difference, and that ticks me off. I had every intention of voting for Newt. Now, I’ll probably just write in either Newt or Sarah.

I don’t know. I sad and sick over all of this, as I was 100% in for Newt, but if it takes pulling the level for Romney to see that asswipe and his jerk wife walk out of the WH and get on that helicopter ...and be GONE FOREVER, and his looney toon administration gone as well???

Well, then so be it. I want this goon OUT. His presidency has been nothing but a collossal joke and WASTE OF TIME. Really — just a WASTE of trillions of dollars and valuable time — while we watch him golf and her go on vacation in Spain. While we watch the country fall apart.

I somehow cannot see Romney doing this. I don’t think he’ll take the lavish vacations, and I think he’s going to work extremely hard. It might not always be in the perfect pitch conservative direction, but at least he won’t SLACK and DIVIDE and WASTE.

I realize I’m selling out, but come ON conservatives ...we got ourselves into this by NOT uniting on ONE anti-Romney waaaaay back. We did it to ourselves. Now we have to live with it. Sorry.

If you don’t agree, I perfectly respect your right not to vote for him, but I will in November. And I will also vote 100% conservative down ticket.

It’s what we have to work with. It’s not perfect, but sometimes you have to do what you can with what you have — or what you have brought upon yourself.

Maybe we’ll learn next time to put up a decent candidate and GET BEHIND HIM OR HER!!!!!!!!!!
