Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry made comments Monday about Filipina nurses who work in District hospitals, just weeks after Barry told his supporters that Asian businesses "ought to go."
At a hearing, Barry told the president and board members of the University of the District of Columbia that the school should be supplying D.C. residents to serve in the "lucrative" posts of nurses and teachers.
But that was not the case, Barry said.
"In fact, it's so bad, that if you go to the hospital now, you find a number of immigrants who are nurses, particularly from the Philippines," Barry said. "And no offense, but let's grow our own teachers, let's grow our own nurses -- and so that we don't have to be scrounging around in our community clinics and other kinds of places -- having to hire people from somewhere else."
Barry did not respond to phone calls on Monday evening, and his voicemail inbox was full and not accepting messages.

hmm, I have heard that the philippino nurses are paid less and only get 6 months of training in their homeland.
they make less money the hosptials don’t want to pay American nurses what they are worth, because they want to build that new non profit wing.

Years ago, I worked for a background screening company. Students, who were enrolled in a community college program to get a degree in a nursing program, were required at some point to pay for a background screening. I overheard some phone calls where the students were informed that having a felony conviction disqualified them from ever getting a job in the medical field. I could hear their screaming and crying and it was heartbreaking that they finally were getting their life in order and crimes from their past caught up with them. I remember one girl was pleading and sobbing, “I paid my dues” and was firmly told, “I am sorry”. With these calls and others for similar jobs, there was a lot of cursing from the students or prospective employees, with many speaking ebonics.
Maybe that accounts for the influx of Filipino nurses who QUALIFY for the positions.
I wish people like this would sign a legally binding form saying “if I am seriously ill, I only want to be treated by medical personnel who were chosen for their field because of affirmative action.”
By the way, a Filipina nurse saved my life once.

Just the fact that he noticed and brought it up means he’s looking at skin, not content of character......can you imagine the explosion of negative media coverage had a white Republican made such a statement?...........

In some ways, you have to be refreshed by this. Here you have a politician who makes no bones about the fact that he wants a racial spoils system. Blacks are in charge so hire blacks and keep the whites, Latinos and Asians out. Its stupid and biggoted. Marion Barry is a low-rent, underhanded, corrupt fool. But its better than having to listen to the moralizing that would justify this as anything other than a racial spoils system.
the district should never have autonomy, free from Congressional oversight if they keep electing anyone with the last name Barry or having any relation to Marion Barry.
Until they can prove that they can be responsible adults, the district residents will be treated like the dependent children they are.
I had the same thought. Do you think Marion Berry will follow up with the idea that education can be a 'black thing', and kids really ought to stay in school? To do that, though, he'll have to tell the guys to get out of gangs, and stay off drugs. Then he'd have to tell the girls that they ought to tell the guys NO, so they won't get pregnant at 14 and 15, and consign themselves and their children to a life of poverty.
Actually nurses have been being replaced by ‘guest workers’ for the same reason as high techies - cheap labor. Nursing is another field that has been labeled ‘jobs americans can’t / won’t do’.
Hospitals have been crying labor shortage while firing experienced, proven US nurses, and refusing to hire new grads because they are not experienced. This is a great scam - cry shortage, get people to go into debt for a college education and hire cheap labor from overseas.

Absolutely! That would have been unfair also. We've been putting up with that crap for 50 years.
In his desperation, Newt pulled the phony "I'm so offended!" card multiple times recently and revealed that he's a total hack. Serious conservatives are better than that.
