WASHINGTON (AP) Newt Gingrich's daughter says the former House speaker will "reassess" his campaign after the votes are tallied in Delaware, potentially setting the stage for his exit from the Republican presidential race.
Jackie Gingrich Cushman said Tuesday that her father's campaign has slimmed down but is still winning over voters who aren't yet sold on Mitt Romney, who has effectively clinched the GOP presidential nomination.
Despite trailing Romney in convention delegates and fundraising, Gingrich has vowed to campaign until the party's late-summer convention in Florida.
Gingrich is carrying more than $4.3 million in debt and has been spending more money than he is taking in.

I read a few pieces where people thought that Newt wanted to go out on a high note with a strong showing in DE. Are there any current numbers from there?
I haven’t seen anything new from DE.
Has anybody seen anything from any of the states that have not yet voted in the primary?
Since Santorum dropped out, they stopped conducting primary polls. Over at RealClearPolitics I’ve seen nothing for weeks. It’s just part of the media narrative that the rest of our votes just don’t matter.
“....Romney, who has effectively clinched the GOP presidential nomination.”
WHOA! When did he do that!?
It really P*sses me off when candidates drop out before all the states get to vote. Same as election night when the news people call the races before all states get to vote.
That’s why we need a National Primary Day.
I think it was a couple years ago...
I think it has more to do with money. Polling gets expensive, depending on the state and methodology. I don't think Newt has any money to do it and Milt doesn't care anymore.
True. A couple of years ago he clinched it with the GOP-e didn’t he.
Campaign?
As a money raiser, perhaps Newt’s campaign should sell “NO ROMBAMA” bumper stickers.
He won this nomination process de facto when his operatives were given such strong reign over Palin’s VP campaign.
Yet, much can still happen before Election Day. Things could turn on a dime.
It costs a lot of money to campaign. When the inflow of donations tapers off, so does the campaigning.
....Romney, who has effectively clinched the GOP presidential nomination.
WHOA! When did he do that!?”
The day Sarah Palin announced she wasn’t running....
Methinks maybe dirty tricks last 24 hours to depress opposition to Romney, since the text rather continues to not match the gossipy headline.
I will stand with Newt until/unless HE tells me he’s out.
You are correct. It snuck past me on initial reading. Good catch!
If Newt Gingrich does, officially, drop out of the ‘12 race for POTUS, then who should the majorities of conservative voters/very conservative voters vote for, instead, in the ‘12 race for POTUS, and how does anybody make such a choice really happen, if it’s not going to be voting in the majority for RINO Mitt Romney? Virgil Goode? Gary Johnson? “Blank” the race for ‘12 POTUS? Write-In somebody else-the same person, as a majority of conservative/very conservative voters? How is the U.S. not on its last legs, as a capitalistic country?
Why would a campaign say that right BEFORE the state is voting?
Doesn’t she see how that will hurt his GOTV effort?
You mean in order to guarantee that the richest candidate wins all the time? The deepest pockets would just flood the airways in all the big markets in every key state and win by default forever. You think guys like Santorum or Newt had a hard time competing this time around, under your plan they wouldn't even have a chance. Your national primary day proposal eliminates the ability for a guy with few resources like Santorum to gain traction over the course of a primary and at least have an opportunity to emerge. If you ever, ever, ever want more candidates in touch with the grass roots running for office, you absolutely do not want a national primary day. Not saying what we have is all that great, but national primary day is simply an atrocious alternative.
Please see post 20.
I think we need a Conservative Primary, so that we all get behind ONE candidate who will run against the GOP establishment candidate for the GOP nomination.
We can’t beat a McCain or Romney if we are splitting our vote between 3-5 conservatives. We did the same thing in 2008 as we did this year and it does not work.
If there were 5 conservatives running against GHW Bush in 1980, there would have been no Reagan. Bush would have walked away with it just as Romney is doing.
Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.
I don't have to post crap. Buy a Google button and do your own legwork. There are a bunch of editorials on the subject. Just this week, Newt himself said in an interview that...
"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing," Gingrich told NBC News in an exclusive interview on Monday. "We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are." He acknowledged that he would have to "reassess" his campaign depending on how he fares in Delaware, a winner-take-all state with 17 delegates at stake.
If you are not aware, "reassess" is political code for drop out.
Yes, and I guess you're saying that the candidates' judgement doesn't matter either?
What if we shorten your statement to the nub:
Since Santorum dropped out, ...the rest of our votes just dont matter.
Damn that Santorum. If he'd stayed in then RCP would do polls and MY vote would still matter! wow.
Amen, brother.
What about a national party day primary #1 to whittle the list of potential candidates. Then have numerous widely-televised debates moderated not at all. Turn on the cameras and mikes and let the 4 or 5 candidates have at it. Let US decide what we think. Great TV too!
Then after a few months, have a national party primary day #2 to select the Presidential candidate. The convention would then nominate and select the veep and everyone give speeches.
Nowhere is it written that we have to do things the way we have been doing them to select a party’s candidates.
An honest Republican Party selection process WOULD produce a Conservative candidate. Elites know it and that’s why it’s been done the way it has been.
Whether intentional or not, this news item is geared to dissuade American voters, in these primary States today, from voting for Gingrich. What other purpose? Why would the Gingrich campaign make this announcement ahead of voting? They wouldn’t. Please see post 20, this thread.
Gawd, that picture is freakin’ horrible. Penguin bites can really hurt. LOL
Why should Iowa determine who the candidate is, how many candidates are eliminated because these little states don’t like them? It’s not fair that the race is already decided before the Texas primary.
Oh please, how many primary voters today would really read an article from the Guardian in the UK and have that sway their opinion?
LOL
As if they don't now?!?!?!
Hey, I agree. I don't like that Iowa goes first all the time. How about we press the party to mix it up more? I'd be all for that. I am not saying the way we are doing it now is necessarily good, I am just saying a national primary day would be even worse.
McCain ran on a shoestring budget during some of the 2008 campaign when everyone had written him off. He didn't have much money to spend and he won anyway.
All I am saying is a national primary day would virtually guarantee the richest candidate(s) swamps the key media markets and wins the nomination every time. Candidates would never have an opportunity to emerge and get stronger as the primary season progresses. It's just not a good idea at all.
Not in a runoff. The best Conservative merely needs to make it to #2, then consolidate the Conservative vote. Project that scenario onto 2012, and this thread could be about Gingrich announcing his VP choice...
I don't think so. I don't care if Newt isn't even in this anymore. He and Santorum are still on ballots and available for the non Milt vote. I will be voting non Milt shortly here. If anything, I think this talk pushes down Milt voters. Why bother to vote, when your guy has this "sewed up"?
Yea, but if we did that how in the hell could the GOPe manipulate the selection?
Dear Newt,
Please announce:
1. That your name will remain on all ballots in all states.
2. That you strongly encourage the voters to rock the establishment, rock the vote, and vote non-romney.
3. That especially those states at the end of the process should register a protest that the GOP-establishment thinks their out-of-control attack ads and media management have reduced everyone’s choices to zero. ROCK THAT ARROGANCE and STICK IT TO ‘EM! Vote on your ballot ANYTHING BUT ROMNEY!
“Thats why we need a National Primary Day.”
You are correct; ordinary primary voters won’t hear it from this UK outlet. But I understood this link was to be typical of what the news media in general are reporting today, not an isolated hidden news tidbit.
My mistake, I suppose, but is it one worthy of condescension...? Well, you for one thought so.
First of all, the Primary Season is way too long, which of course benefits the candidates with the most money.
I like the idea of breaking it out into maybe 3 primary days, spread out over one month. Each of the days has a mix of small states/large states, so that the number of electoral votes on each day is roughly the same.......after each one, the bottom one or two candidates must drop out.
A nothing article is right.
The campaign has already indicated it would reassess after Delaware. I read about that earlier and not from anything the daughter said.
This headline makes it sound like this reassessment will lead to a drop out, and doesn’t even mention it happens AFTER Delaware, and people haven’t even voted yet.
But we have people here claiming it’s all innocent and pure as the wind drive snow.
Hadn’t considered that angle. Thanks.
