Republican Insiders Have A Favorite For Veep: Senator Rob Portman
Buzz Feed ^ | April 21, 2012 | Zeke Miller

There is no doubt in the minds of Republican National Committee members that Mitt Romney will be their standard bearer in the fall, and already consensus is building behind one potential vice presidential nominee — Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.

In an informal survey of more than half of the Republican State Chairmen and national committee people at this weekend’s State Chairman meeting at a resort here, two-thirds said they believe Portman is the most-likely and best-qualified running-mate for Mitt Romney. The committee members spoke to BuzzFeed only on the condition of anonymity.

“He’s from Ohio, and we need to win Ohio, it’s that simple,” said one state chair.

Portman, a former Congressman from the Cincinnati area who was director of the Office of Management and Budget during the George W. Bush administration, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. And the warmth Republican elites express for him stems much from a desire to avoid another risky, flamboyant pick like Sarah Palin as it does for his ability to help carry an important swing state.

“Romney needs to make a safe pick, and keep talking about the economy — and that’s Rob Portman,” said one committeewoman from the West.

The ‘insiders’ continue to show their disconnect with political reality.

Yeah, not flamboyant, that’s the answer...I suggest Senator McConnell, he fits that requirement to a “T”! /s

Agree. I see nothing about Portman that would swing an election or even swing OH. He’s a relatively safe vote in the Senate. Again, do NOT deplete the Senate conservatives.

“The only possible drawback would be his work in the Bush Administration.”

Yep. OTOH, people are looking back at the Bush years as “the good ole days”.

Bob Portman (R-OH) who was one of the sponsors behind that fiasco called the high tech, hazardous waste, compact florescent lamp (CFL) to replace those low tech, inefficient incandescent lights. THAT Bob Portman? A perfect match for that low grade moron, Mittens “Flip-Flop” Romney. This GOPee show gets worse with each passing day.

I beleive the CFL fiasco was in 2007. He was out of the House since 2005.

He is somehow implicated in this CFL fiasco. I just can't remember exactly how. Maybe he was defending it as a good idea to save the planet or some other stupid nonsense. However, as I recall, he did not favor repealing this stupid piece of feel-good legislation.

who?

I have never heard this name before

The PRESIDENT ticket is not yet decided so why talk about VPO

NEW YORK PRIMARY IS TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!
AND NO ONE IS EVEN TALKING ABOUT IT ON TV!
THAT MEANS YOU CAN GET A WIN FOR GINGRICH JUST BY GETTING A COUPLE OF PEOPLE TO GO VOTE!!!

Seriously folks, there was like 5 people ALL DAY last primary here - no one was enthused about McLame

No one is enthused about Romney so Gingrich could take it if WE GO VOTE AND GET OTHERS TO VOTE

CALL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!!!!!!! Tuesdays primary is the second most important day for those of you in primary states behind the November elections day

Billie Cunningham said that Rob Vanilla Portman is the front runner.

That would be typical of Mittens to not want to be upstaged.

I’m with you, EoHh.

But I’d have to think about what I would do if Rick were the Veep pick. There would always be the chance that Mittens arrogant head would explode and then the real President could step up.

On second thought, I have vowed that I will not vote for Mittens.
If Rick were the pick, I’d be happy though.

Ohioans are funny, and Portman, my former congressman, is not one of the political family names in Ohio. He was a very good congressman, a bit obscure in the budget office, and a fairly silent US Senator. I get more mail from Sherrod Brown, the uber-liberal.

The pubbies need BOTH Florida and Ohio to head off an easy Obama victory.

I’m putting my money on Rubio...especially since Krauthammer’s comment the other day.
