Are Egypt’s Islamists Headed for a Collision with the Military?

Much has been written about a tacit agreement between the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) led by Field Marshal Tantawi and the Muslim Brothers. But as events leading up to the presidential elections began to unravel, it has become clear that no such arrangement was ever brokered between the two sides, and if it were, it is today null and void. Fourteen months after the revolution it is an accepted fact that the Islamists have hijacked the revolution and have become the leading force in Egypt. They adopted a tactic to create the illusion that they would share power with the non-Islamic forces, but then went on to win 70 percent of the seats in parliament. The current situation has been created by the inability of SCAF to rule Egypt since the end of the Mubarak regime. Their zig-zag policy, particularly towards the Islamists, has created a situation in which liberals and secular forces lost at each encounter. The Presidential Election Committee has barred three leading candidates: former Minister for Intelligence Omar Suleiman, Salafi candidate Hazem Abu Ismail, and leading Muslim Brotherhood candidate Khairat el Shater. (The Brotherhood was careful to nominate an additional presidential candidate who qualified, Mohammad Morsi.) Egypt is entering a period of political instability with dire consequences for its neighbors, first and foremost for Israel. The Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty could become a “scapegoat” to divert attention from unsolvable domestic economic problems, seeking to blame outside factors for Egypt’s deteriorating situation.

The army has been running Egypt since Nasser. They're running it now and still collecting billions in tribute.

They'll be running it in the future.

The Egyptian Brotherhood was wiped out once before.

Isn’t frustrating that because of the guy in our White House we have to rely on the Egyptian army to stop the Muslim Brotherhood?

The sooner the “Brotherhood” is crushed in any way that is at least as brutal as they are is a good thing. Why? Islamic radicles only under brute force and only fear brute force stronger and nastier than they are.

There are lurking in the shadows the monied interests who collaborate with if not control the military.

Together they will sort it all out and maintain control.

How much of this is driven by the knowledge that an Islamic take over will result in a large amount of the Military dieing in a new war?

Not too often it is a good thing for a military to be running a country. This is one case where I pray they have a firm grip and are able to keep the islamic wave from washing over another once benign nation.

Some members of the army are Islamists. They are the ones who killed Sadat. If the Islamists seize the army, Egypt is sunk.

If the Islamists are ascendant in Egypt, it will sink into poverty and backwardness.

The Egyptian military is NOT going to allow the Muslim Brotherhood to take over so they and their families can be murdered by this rabble. The Egyptian Army will go after the MB and there will be a fearful slaughter, but the MB will be crushed in a way that will require decades to rebuild.

I can hardly wait for Obama, Panetta, and McCain tell us American interests require us to defend the Muslim Brotherhood from the Egyptian Army!

"If the Islamists seize the army, Egypt is sunk."

Good point. The Islamists bided their time in Turkey, penetrated the military, and they are now in control of the government.
