It is a camarotang! I like it, but I will keep my 2012 shelby gt 500 for now.
The EPA will soon ban all cars that can make their tires smoke by accelerating. There is a safety exemption that allows smoking tires produce by rapid braking. However the new black box will determine if the driver was at fault and, if so, appropriate fines will be charged to their credit card. No credit card? No one will be allowed to purchase a new or used car or license plates without having a major credit card. Armed Black Panther members will strictly enforce the federal no smoking ordinance and may legally kill those white people they detect smoking their tires.

The car handled fine even on winding roads, the weight of the engine kept the front end on the ground when you kept your foot on the brake and put the throttle to the floor, then release brake pedal, what a thrill that was. The car handled even better when I got rid of the poly-glass wide ovals and put on T/A radials 60 series. And by the way I also replaced the original distributor with an Accel dual point w/50000 volt coil.

The Ford Motor Company is giving its Mustang a unique 50th birthday present: death. Detroit will still market an automobile called the Mustang. It just won't bear much of a resemblance......the same move years ago resulted in the Mustang II.
The Mustang, which has had a strong retro look since 2005, is losing steam, too. Last year Ford sold 70,438, down 4.4% from 2010 and less than half the 166,530 it sold in 2006.
This is because the 2005-2009 models were the most strongly "retro", looking like the '69-'70 Fastback models - arguably the first-generation Mustang's zenith with the Mach 1, Boss 302 and Boss 429. In '71, the car got big and bloated, like a variant of the Torino. Despite increases in performance from 2010-12, the cars are NOT as attractive.
Another BIG reason (duh, Ford/WSJ) is that Dodge brought the Challenger to market in 2008 and Chevy rolled the new Camaro out in 2010. Of course Ford is going to lose some sales to the non-brand-loyal buyers who now have a choice. Even Hyundai is after a piece of Ford's ponycar action with the Genesis coupe.

When I was a teenager and muscles care ruled our world, I had a boyfried that had a beautiful sky blue Roadrunner with a white top. We used to get on the highway in front of my house poor bleach on the road and make beautiful white smoke with those tires. I have some pictures somewhere. If I knew how to post them I would.
In retrospect, that worked for him, because he had a mostly good eye for when a tool couldn't be used, and I only saw him fall prey to a bad tool.
But it was cars. My dad had two of the worst cars ever (on the list) in a three year period! He didn't have good car sense.
He had this:
Whew. Then he got this, and little kids we were, we called it the "beep beep" because of that silly french horn. But you know, when I look at it now...I think I like it!
My dad had a white one in 1966 when he was stationed at the Navy Yard in Washington DC. It is best known in my family for the smell. My dad took us with him to pick up some things for the yard at a store called GEM. (My dad worked part time there for years)
One of those things was a bag of manure.
Now, being a small car, the only place you could put that bag of manure with a full car of kids was the floor underfoot, where we were expected to rest our feet gently on top of it.
As soon as we began driving, as my feet rested on that back of manure, I began to kick my feet on it in the bored manner of a boy who has been banished to Right Field in Little League, because you can't hit...can't catch, you stand out there the whole game wearing grooves in the ground with your sneakers where you stand.
Well, that's what I did to that bag of manure. I admit it. I just giggled at my dads puzzled and panicked look as he got the smell and looked back.
That car was just about six months old, as I recall.
Anyway, here I am, talking about how cars were his weak point, but then you know what? As I thought of those cars, I remembered this one:
A 1964 Chrysler New Yorker wagon just like this one, except it had a red interior. Push button transmission. Room for 10 people. 413 cubic inches. Built like a fricking Sherman Tank. (Traveled across country in it, my parents spent their wedding anniversary with us all sleeping in the car,a the front end of the car off the ground on a hill, the rear stuck in the mud. We lost the brakes coming down Pikes Peak!!!)
So, I thought..."THAT was a beastly, car, and a good one, too. (Took it to Japan and Subic Bay)

But you know...the one I got to drive in High School, was...this:
Had the same paint scheme, but the shift lever was on the dashboard. I had that great slant six.
Come to think of it, Dad...You made some great choices!

I have a cousin who has either 4 or 5 of those early models. They are just sitting on his property and will probably just rust away eventually.
I noticed a year or so ago, he put a sign on them which read “Not For Sale”. He is now approaching 70 and he obviously in never going to restore them.
I just don’t understand why he doesn’t sell them while they are still in fairly good shape.

I drove a 79 or 80 “Mustang” once, pretty much the same thing as a Mercury Capri. That was a very sad car to have the Mustang badge.
Yes, and they were fairly reliable too - my sister loved hers. The vehicle was fine, it was just the attempt to foist off a Mazda as a Mustang that was a bad idea.

Agreed. I had the turbo version. Only problem was the suspension and engine mounts were of poor design... it was a ditch-hunter under heavy boost.

Like most I think the 89-70 Boss Mustangs were the pinnacle, but I think the hated 73ish Stangs with the 351Cleveland 4V (especially the Boss 351) is seriously underrated. Yes it was a pig, but it was a FAST pig. People should look up it’s stats vs the 429. You will be in for a shock.
That car, with side pipes, rear window louvers and 50s/70s to me is the ‘classic’ redneck backyard hotrod. I’ve built a few cars over the years (and trucks) but never could find one in salvagable condition that the owner didn’t want a fortune for (just the regular ones, bit the Boss, which is rare as hen’s teeth to begin with.) They are usually either on the wrong side of ‘project’ quality or in good shape and should be left alone for what they are.
And a 351C4V at 7,000 RPM makes the most beautiful sound on earth.

Seriously, both the Mustang and Camaro are basically going to be history, due to demographics. Both start and mid-20’s and the one you actually WANT is 45-60K. Seriously. This is why the average age of a buyer is in the 50’s.
I am not buying it, for 2 reasons. Ford isn’t Government Motors. They will build what people will open their wallets and buy. For Mustang, that is horsepower. Who is afraid of IRS? Contrary to the article, the drag race crowd wasnt putting 1000 HP in front of a stock axle. The Ford 9 inch rear end has been the standard for drag racing for 40 years and for that reason, it is one of the cheapest to build and modify. The IRS in a factory horse car will be great. As a road racer with a solid rear axle, trust me the difference is astounding. If Ford keeps the current body, current motor and puts IRS in, I may not need to buy a Corvette (I hate GM, but that thing goes turns and stops like nothing else for the dollar)
Reason 2? Remember the Ford Probe? It was touted as the next Mustang until fans flooded Ford with mail. They will do the same thing. Drown in the adoration of thousands and release this “next Mustang” as a new model. The next Mustang will have a short deck, long hood and a V8. Anything else is economic suicide.

The Cobra IRS was fairly stout short of a 5000 RPM sidestep of the clutch, so it’s definitely doable. The aftermarket stuff nearly bulletproofed it (granted, it’s no 9 in.)
Check out what the off-Road guys do with Mendiola transaxles and Porsche/custom CVs. They withstand big power, and get 20+ inches of travel while pounding/shock loading everything in ways that makes that sidestep look like a Sunday drive. For 1000 miles at a clip.
Make that for 35,000 and give it 400 hp standard and they will sell a million a year

I am not sure that a turbo 4 cyl. Rear drive Mustang is a bad idea.
The SVO turbo was a nice car.
What it will boil down to is weight control (keep it light), and good alloys for the exhaust valves so you can sustain high power outputs under high boost pressure.
But I doubt I’ll be a customer, because it will probably still be assembled by uaw workers, meaning quality will be hit or miss.
im not afraid to open my wallet for a Mustang. That broad in the front seat scares me more economically.
The original 64 Mustang was designed with IRS, but from a price perspective it didnt make sense. So they used a cheap Falcon axle. Having IRS is awesome. Drive an early 2000’s Mustang with IRS next to a faster, stronger GT with live axle. I guarantee after that drive what you want is the power of the v8 with the IRS.
The only downside to IRS I’m aware of is cost/complexity. When done right/beefy, they are killer. I think a lot of people just don’t understand them for performance applications.
Sure, drag racing is one thing when you have monster slicks and a ton of bite, but the reliability gained comes with a huge penalty in all other scenarios. Like I said above, the off-road racers perfected the beefy IRS in brutal conditions. 400 HP to the ground on 37 in tires puts incredible stress on IRS components - far more than a drag car. But that IRS helps the vehicles so equipped out handle their solid brethren. In the late 90s, Ivan Stewart’s Toyota Trophy Truck regularly beat up on the Solid trucks with far more travel. Of course that was all custom gear, but the principle applies.
It can be done with modern tech, no prob. I just think the real hurdle is in the traditionalist mindset.

No, it’s not a ‘64 Stang. 1964 was almost a half century ago. Not that the original Mustang was anything to write home about. I had one, and it handled like a pig and had brakes that were a joke, albeit a scary one. Basically, the Mustang formula was to take cheapo Falcon parts and cover them up better looking sheet metal. It was not until Ol’ Shel tweaked the dang thing and gave us the first GT350 that the Mustang started getting good.
Truth be told, the 2012 Boss 302 is a better car in every way than the original was in 1969-70. It is quicker, faster, stops better, handles MUCH better and even gets better gas mileage to boot. It’s arguably the best Mustang ever, and it will blow many much more expensive Shelbys with much higher horsepower ratings right off the track. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, but given the choice of Steve McQueen’s Green ‘68 for the movie or it namesake Ford offered up 40 years later, I’d take the ‘08. I love the 390, but it was basically a truck engine.
It’s 2012, and Pontiac is gone, taking with it the Firebird and GTO. Plymouth is also gone, but it had been a long time since anything like the Road Runner or ‘Cuda had been built with a Plymouth nameplate anyway. Same goes for Olds and the mighty 4-4-2 which was finally reduced to a Cutlass trim package on models that had the 260 Olds V8. Getting rid of it was a mercy killing.
If the Mustang ever dies, it won’t be Ford that kills it this time. It will be Congress, CARB, the EPA and politicians like Obama who believe that all cars should be badge-engineered Chevy Volts. The 2005 and newer Mustangs are good cars in spite of these leftists, not because of them. No matter what kind of Mustang Ford builds, Shelby, Roush, Saleen (he’s bought his company back) and others will offer all sorts of interesting variants on it.
What’s going away is the manual transmission. Each year, more and more models (except for smaller cars) are not being offered with a true manual gearbox. On many models which do offer a stick shift, it’s usually on available with the weakest engine in the lineup and on the lowest trim level. On sportier models, paddle shifters for auto trannys are all the rage these days. Heck, you can’t even get a manual in a full-size truck anymore unless you opt for a heavy duty with a diesel engine.
I’ve owned two Mustangs, a ‘66 that was built on a Falcon chassis and a Mustang II hatchback that was built on a Pinto chassis. At least the II had the Cologne V6 with a four speed manual. Not exactly a bat out of hell, but it drove better than the wheezy 2.3 liter four banger. Funny thing was that the Mercury Capri II with the same engine was quicker and handled better mainly because it wasn’t as heavy as the Mustang.
Someday I hope to come across an ‘08 Bullit that hasn’t been trashed too badly. I’ll jump all over it. My dream car is a ‘12 Boss 302, but I don’t think I’ll be able to afford one, even used.
I looked at your about page; I was overhead in 73-74 flying P-3s locating NVN gun runners (small coastal freighters closely hugging the coast line) for you guys to move in and blow them out of the water! We had no armor, no weapons on board and no self-sealing fuel tanks so my eyesight improved to 20-100, and I could visually ID those sneaky little bastards from 5 miles away, back off and track them on radar while you guys closed in for the kill. I bet your gunners mates had fun with that!
