An employee working for the Medicaid program of the Department of Health and Human Services inappropriately transferred some personal information of more than 228,000 beneficiaries to his personal email.

Update 1:30 p.m.: The S.C. Law Enforcement Division has identified the employee behind the breach as 36-year-old Christopher Lykes of Swansea. He was arrested this afternoon and booked at the Richland County Detention Center on five counts of violating the Medically Indigent Act and one count of disclosure of confidential information. SLED has confirmed that at least one other party received the information Lykes transferred to his email.

Everyone get used to this. As medical records ‘go electronic’, this will happen with frequency.

I’d about wager that everyone reading this who goes to the hospital or doctor will have their records compromised in some way within the next 10 years.

I work in Healthcare IT, and avoid healthcare like the plague for this reason. When I HAVE to go, I don’t tell them anything I wouldn’t want the world to know. Scary stuff.

That wont save you.

I have personally received several multiple paged faxed medical documents.

I dutifully call the originator, and ask to speak to a supervisor, to report the careless incident.
I doubt very much they care, based on tone of voice I hear.

I routinely shred those documents, and curse the waste of my paper and time.

Next time it happens, I will contact the individual patient involved, and ask them and/or their lawyer to please come and retrieve the documents.

lol That happens quite a lot. It sucks worst when some server does it, because it will continue to fax until someone finds it and intervenes. Most of the time a call comes in from someone complaining about getting faxes, or calls from a fax machine....all day, tying up their phone line.

No problem—the accused is black and he’ll walk.
