Can I venture a guess that most of the morons who didn’t know the Titanic sinking was real probably (without being forced to) have never read a newspaper, book, or magazine not having to do with entertainment in their short, shallow lives. Further interrogations of these numbskulls would most likely find them not knowing a lot of other things people taken for granted as common knowledge by most people. When I was about seven or eight, I knew about the sinking of the Titanic. And there several movies about the sinking that were making the rounds. In fact I remember seeing pictures of the Andrea Doria on the front page of the local rag as well. Too young to read the story, but I remember the pictures. This is the age we live in where “news” about celebrities takes precedence over hard news.

A few years ago, I was sitting on the beach with my husband. We were next to three people (two guys and a gal) in their mid to late twenties. All three were particularly loud, and we understood they were in med school in Raleigh, NC. One man and the woman were apparently getting married and talking about their imminent honeymoon. They said they were going to Greece and the woman said excitedly that they were going to an island. The second man asked with wonder, “are there any islands in Greece?” the couple answered very pleased that there were, and that they hadn't known that, either.
Needless to say, my husband and I were shocked that these buffoons had somehow gotten into a fairly prestigious medical school without the basic understanding that Greece ‘had some islands’. Total idiocy.

When teaching middle school social studies and language arts, I would have the kids read that book, and then watch the movie. I had heavily diversified students, most of whom never had heard anything bad had ever happened to anyone who wasn’t black. I am haunted by a scene in that story about a women who secretly gives birth in the camp, and then, of course, gets caught.

My introduction to the downside of minority preference in college admissions came via a classmate during my freshman year, in an elective introduction to astronomy course.

After several weeks, this female classmate finally spoke up and asked her first question, which was “Where these places be, up in the sky?”

I just can’t understand how anyone could make it to eighteen years old and not be exposed to this concept, through television alone if nothing else.

It’s really instructive to look at it in this light. How would one approach such a movie targeted right back at them?

The most frightening thing to the left is to be regarded as stupid and uncool. Take an iconic word freighted with meaning to them, something on a par with the Biblical “Deliverance,” and use that as the title.

True story: Recently my sister-in-law was commenting on the Apollo 13 movie she saw and was talking it up. Some of her comments made me wonder; Was she aware this event really happened? So, I asked her if she was aware the movie was based closely on the REAL Apollo 13 event. Imagine my shock when she was stunned by the question and was adamant it was only a movie and it never happened.

Argh. . .

Oh, and she is 59-yrs old. . .and was alive during the event (but apparently not paying attention to anything).

During a teacher conference with my son's kindergarten teacher, she commented on his large vocabulary. She repeated something that he had said in which he used the word "lair" and then asked me if he used the word properly because she didn't know what it meant.

What upset me the most, wasn't that she didn't know the word, but that she was so intellectually un-curious that she couldn't even be bothered to look it up.

Although I only learned about it in the last year, when I read a book about forgotten moments in history. I told my husband about it, and he’d never heard of it either. Then again, I’m the history geek in our house. I got excited yesterday when I downloaded ‘A Night to Remember’ on my Kindle for $1.99.

I picked up this book in the store a few weeks back and I'm slowly reading it to find out all the stuff I slept through in high school and college. I'm happy to now have time to get a deeper understanding of history and physics.

At the end of 7th grade my family moved to a new town. The second or third day there I was trying to figure out the spelling of a word during English, and asked the teacher where the dictionaries were. He instantly made me the most-hated kid in the class by loudly pointing out that the new kid had actually asked for the dictionary on his third day, while none of the other kids had bothered to ask for it the entire year.

This is the fatal flaw. There is very little curiosity. When children are very young, say five or six years old, they want to learn everything and they want to know how everything works. At the end of their twelve years of public education, they want to know nothing. It never occurs to them to look something up. We graduate wonderful consumers, people who know how to covet, and people who have no problems obtaining life-long debts. We do not graduate learners. An interesting read is The Dumbest Generation. I'd also recommend Weapons of Mass Instruction. Both are eye-opening.

When my daughter was in elementary school her 6th grade teacher thought Saint Patrick's contribution to the world was he brought the potato to Ireland. My daughter who know better came to me and said, ‘Dad you know what stupid thing Mrs So-n-Son said to day?’. It was a year of “huh” coming out of that lady's mouth, but that's the one I remember best.

I heartily agree. I collected stamps as a kid, and learned so much geography and history. A country's stamps portray its history and famous people and events. A great hobby for any kid.

This may be a minor quibble, but IMHO, teachers are not there to teach; they are there to help you learn.

To my mind, it is not that the younger generation is not taught, it is that the teachers, to a large extent, fail to inspire a love of learning.

While the end result is the same, I think the responsibility for learning always is on the student, who, after all, must live with the consequences...
