Addressing Climate Change through Diet
Voice of America ^ | April 13, 2012 | by Joe DeCrapua

A new study says one of the best ways to curb greenhouse gas emissions is to eat less meat. In fact, the study says meat consumption in the developed should be cut by 50 percent per person by 2050.

Dr. Eric Davidson said changing how people eat can have a dramatic effect on greenhouse gas emissions. People in developed countries, he said, already eat much more protein than the daily minimum requirement.

Davidson looked for ways to ease the effects of climate change that would support an aggressive strategy laid out by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In particular, the effects of nitrous oxide, described as the third biggest contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide and methane.

Even if it were possible to turn off all harmful greenhouse gas emissions today, he said climate change would continue.

“That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t start the mitigation now because the sooner we start it the more options our children and grandchildren will have in terms of being able to feed themselves and have prosperous lifestyles without environmental degradation,” he said.

My study says the best way to curb greenhouse gas emissions would be for global warming alarmists to stop exhaling so much.

I agree, this is another attempt by radical environmentalist vegetarians to impose their eating habits (vices) on everyone else. Notice he talks about people in the “developed countries” i.e. Americans, eating more than the “minimal daily requirement” of protein. Sounds like he’s pushing the Russian Peasant Diet or the North Korean peon diet. Eat bark, lose weight. Imagine all the extra methane from more and more people becoming vegetarians.

The Left-Wing SOB is correct about over-consumption of protein. Gotta have it. Too much is NG.

The anus-GlobalWarmer has the right idea about the human diet, which should be about 75-80% complex Carbohydrates,(vegetables, fruit) 12-15% proteins, with a lot of those from vegetable sources (beans, lentils, etc) if possible, and the rest good fats like olive oil, butter, cheese, nuts etc. Steak? Sure. Great for you once every couple of weeks. Fish. Poultry. Wild game ... even better!

It's a healthy diet. Now about global warming: Read up on the Milankovitch Glaciation Cycle. It has long been accepted by Geologists, paleo-geologists, physicists, astrophysicists, astronomers, mathematicians, even archeologists, paleontologists ... every branch of science ... even climatologists who do not have the caput in ano syndrome seen in smart people who convince themselves that the Democrats are are the answer.

Stay in shape. We'll need some good men when the post election riots begin.

I’m actually considering raising Scottish Highland steer, probably two at a time. I found a place that does slaughtering and will even pick them up for me. $65 per head plus the packaging cost per pound (around 60 cents or so). I already have livestock guardian dogs. I figure I’ll have my own beef supply within a couple years. If anyone here is knowledgable about such things I’d love to talk to you.

I promise that by 2050, I will eat 50% less meat. I’ll be about 98 by then.

I don't know first hand but I had a friend who tried it about 20 years ago with 3 beef cattle. He said it was a royal pain in the a$$ and after that he was going to the store to buy his beef like everybody else.

My friend also held down a full time job and said if he were retired it would be different.

I'll be 105 and we can get together for a picnic of mashed potatoes and stewed prunes.

Yes, I don’t have 2-3 acres of grass to feed them naturally, well I do but it’s currently wooded. Hay around here looks to be around $5 a bale and they can tackle at least one a day. That’s considerable money. This is supposed to save me money but will it?

If I can clear two acres and grow grass for one and stagger them, only then would it really make sense. Buying hay inhales with great velocity...

“Climate change? People still believe that stuff?”

I don’t really even know what I’m supposed to believe in, anyway. “Global warming” or “a new Ice Age” I can wrap my head around, but “climate change”? What the heck does that mean? Everything and anything, presumably. Reminds me of a snatch of dialogue from The Sopranos (paraphrasing):

Tony “Any changes coming to the market?”

Wall Street Guy “The market’s always changing.”

Isn’t Methane a greenhouse gas ... and they want us to eat more veggies and cereals? I think I can smell a flaw in their logic.
