Gov’t Spent $205,075 to ‘Translocate’ One Shrub from Path of San Fran Stimulus Project

The government spent at least $205,075 in 2010 to “translocate” a single bush in San Francisco that stood in the path of a $1.045 billion highway-renovation project that was partially funded by the economic stimulus legislation President Barack Obama signed in 2009.

“In October 2009, an ecologist identified a plant growing in a concrete-bound median strip along Doyle Drive in the Presidio as Arctostaphylos franciscana,” the U.S. Department of Interior reported in the Aug. 10, 2010 edition of the Federal Register.

The bush—a Franciscan manzanita—was a specimen of a commercially cultivated species of shrub that can be purchased from nurseries for as little as $15.98 per plant. The particular plant in question, however, was discovered in the midst of the City of San Francisco, in the median strip of a highway approaching the Golden Gate Bridge, and was deemed to be the last example of the species in the “wild.”

Prior to the discovery of this “wild” Franciscan manzanita, the plant had been considered extinct for as long as 62 year--outside of people’s yards and cultivated botanical gardens.

This smacks of money laundering which our government seems to be very good at.

I blame global warming. Some idiot liberal's brain melted and this poor plant was stranded on a billion dollar glorified sidewalk.

Stupid seems to be the only thing not fleeing California.

Oh ... come on !!! The money spent was ABSOLUTELY justified ...

First, ya gotta have the Environmental Impact Statement, then ya gotta have public hearings, then ya gotta defend the project in court, then ya gotta have the court appeals, FINALLY ya gotta cut the check to the Obama 2012 campaign ...

All in all - money WELL spent ...

The level of waste and fraud of Government is nearly endless. Cull 75% of the useless Government workers, let cities privatize their services based on a tax base that’s flat.

Did they take this plant via Lambroghini?

... or the plant dropped out of someone's car, landed on the median, and took root.

How do they know that a resident didn’t buy a $16 plant for his yard, and that propagated itself to the highway center median? Nature spreads plants on the wind all the time. Bet it was originally a store-bought planting.

It's not just California...this kind of thing is happening everywhere.

Almost a quarter of a million dollars to move a plant?

Relate that to the amount of taxes collected from each of you hard working FReepers every year. NOT including consumption tax, license fees, property taxes etc., I pay around $20,000 a year. Add the rest of the taxes and we might have $35k.

At that rate it would take over 7 years of my work to pay to move that plant.

That's Sick.
