Second large quake strikes Mexico but no tsunami expected

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has struck in the Gulf of Mexico off Mexico but did not generate a tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said.

The quake was centered 83 miles northeast of Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, at a depth of 6.4 miles at 12:15 a.m. Thursday at the epicenter (9:15 p.m. Wednesday in Hawaii), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach issued a bulletin saying that the quake is not expected to generate a Pacific-wide tsunami.

It was the second major earthquake to strike Mexico in less than 12 hours.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 6.5 magnitude quake at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday local time (12:55 p.m. in Hawaii), centered in the sparsely populated mountainous area in Mexico's Michoacan state, 238 miles west-southwest of Mexico City and about 209 miles west-northwest of Acapulco. Authorities in Michoacan state, where the tremor was centered, also had no immediate reports of damage.

The earlier quake also did not generate a destructive tsunami.

If an earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico caused a tsunami that would hit Hawaii, mankind would be in a world of hurt.

How would an earthquake in the gulf of mexico cause a tsunami to hit hawaii?

Besides, Guerrero Negro is on the pacific side of Baja California...been drunk there many times.

Besides, to the east of Guerrero Negro is the Sea of Cortez, not the Gulf of Mexico. Who writes this crap?

Much like everything today, this being on the web site of the HONOLULU Star-Advertiser-the only place I could find a story on this quake at the time-they have to look at it from only their own selfish narcissistic viewpoint.

Apparently the author didn’t bother to look at a map. But who doesn’t know that the Gulf of Mexico opens into the Atlantic?

THX THX for the pings.

Been following the quake threads on ATS.

Given that it’s been decreed that I’m too ignorant to make useful comments about quakes on FR, I think I’ll just walk my fingers on by.
