Gingrich says campaign 'on a shoestring,' signals he's preparing for Romney nomination

(Snip)

Though Gingrich and Romney throughout January engaged in some of the most personal attacks of the presidential primary campaign, Gingrich said Sunday that the two are at peace with one another.

"I hit him as hard as I could, he hit me as hard as he could -- turned out he had more things to hit with than I did," Gingrich said. "That's part of the business."

Gingrich said that if Romney wins 1,144 delegates and clinches the nomination, he will do "everything I can" to support him going into November.

"We are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama," he said. "I will work as hard for (Romney) as I would for myself."

He said he's already spoken with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus about how he can help going into November. "Beyond that ... I'll go back to a post-political career," Gingrich said.

Still, he said supporters are urging him to stay in.

"I do think there's a desire for a more idea-oriented Republican Party," Gingrich said.

Gingrich said he's seeing a "great response" in the upcoming primaries for Delaware and North Carolina, and will "see what happens" in those two states. Despite his comments Sunday, the candidate had recently told The Washington Post that "nothing" could get him out of the race quite yet.

Gingrich said he wants to campaign for changes in the party platform -- namely, to push for domestic energy production, to "stand up very firmly for religious liberty" and to reform the Social Security system.

Romney is leading the field with 660 delegates, according to the Associated Press tally. Rick Santorum is trailing with 281, followed by Gingrich with 135 and Ron Paul with 51.

“That way the evangelicals and homeschoolers can prop up another candidate like Huckabee and Robertson.”

Man, you say that like that’s a bad thing.

Am I on the right site? I’m pretty sure it says ‘Free Republic’, and not ‘Democrat Underground’.

Sigh.

Rick Santorum is a big-government pseudo-conservative. He has consistently voted to increase the size and scope of government in our lives, just as has the rest of the establishment wing of the Republican Party, of which he is a member in good standing.

Exit polls aren't "concrete evidence." Exit polls that you are reffering to only guage peoples' opinions about themselves. They're no more "scientific" or "definitive" than anything else. The simple fact of the matter is that a lot of Santorum's supporters, who may actually believe themselves to be "very conservative," are actually big-government, semi-socialistic, progressive social gospel supporters. Which means they are not true conservatives.

No, they do for the same reason: to realize their ideals they consider the truth, they see the need for destruction of the nation as we know it first since it’s already too corrupt beyond save.

Christie, Bush and Daniels should also do everything they can to guarantee that Iowa maintains its status as the first in the nation caucus. That way the evangelicals and homeschoolers can prop up another candidate like Huckabee and Robertson.

It would not surprise me at all if that is precisely how the establishment moderates see this thing. All they need is one social scripture quoting conservative who clearly can't win a general election to stay in the GOP primary, split the grassroots energy, and clear the path for the RINO. Once it's down to RINO and an unelectable socon, there will always be enough Republican voters who opt for the electable moderate candidate to ensure the establishment prevails.

WAIT A FRIGGIN' MINUTE: Newt has divided the Conservative Vote? Bullsh**! Rick had RINO-Rom all to himself in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Puerto Rico and got his butt handed to him in everyone of those Primaries. Now, what you got to say?

“You can be a Conservative who is forced once again to hold your nose and vote Republican to prevent Obama from getting four more years to finish completely destroying this great nation.”

Let's face it - real, true, Reagan-style movement conservatives do not have a choice in this primary anymore. Gingrich was the closest thing left, but he's about to drop out I suspect.

You are simply limiting everyone else on this site who have been here decades longer than you have, by your personal level of religious piety. After all, this is not a church, it is a political site, populated with a range of dedicated conservative activists. And hopefully, it will not become limited to a fringe criteria as limited as yourself.

Most of Santorum's supporters, so far as I've seen, are actually big-government "conservatives" who just want the big government to do the things *they* want it to do, instead of what the Left wants it to do.

Why support Santorum if a person is a big-government supporter? Romney is far more progressive in terms of big government than Santorum. Most of Santorum supporters are strong social conservatives who don't trust Romney as far as they can throw him (and everyone else would be wise to adopt that thinking as well). Romney tries to reassure with his talk but social conservatives in Massachusetts know that Mitt Romney was their enemy when he was governor.

You consider ‘evangelicals’, and ‘homeschoolers’ as part of the fringe of conservativism?

Why support Santorum if a person is a big-government supporter?

Santorum supporters just want the big government to step in and do what *they* want it to do, instead of what Obama's doing with it. Same motive, even if a different direction.

I’ll never forget Huckabee coming out of nowhere and winning the Iowa caucuses because the religious right and homeschooling associations mobilized. Because of Huckabee we ended up with McCain as our nominee. Because of demographics, these groups have an outsized influence on the outcome in Iowa, and therefore the outcome of the Republican primary. I’m not saying it’s bad or good, it’s just reality.

“Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.” ~ Ronald Reagan, from his first inaugural speech as governor of California, January 5, 1967

Ronald Reagan’s warning about losing our freedoms echoes down through a generation of lost momentum and squandered opportunity.

We now have the most ignorant electorate in the history of American elections. I believe we have the most corrupt government and media our country has ever seen.

I believe that Newt was the one leader that could have turned our country away from the abyss, intelligently and quickly.

It is abundantly clear that not enough folks shared my beliefs.... and far too many lacked the courage to forgive and look beyond the sins in a mans past and into the promise of a brighter future. That is certainly a free choice and a personal choice.... and as it is with all choices, there will be consequences.

In any case, Americans will get the country it apparently wants and a country it so richly deserves. We will not have lost our country because it was taken from us, we will have lost her because we simply gave it all away.

A storm is coming.... hide or learn to dance in the rain.

I would have voted for Newt.

PPP, which has been the most consistant pollster shows Santorum at O+3, and Romney at 0+4.

Romney’s overall spread is 0+5, while Santorum is O+8. MOE is 1.1 percent or so.

Basically the ‘Romney advantage is a point.

Is that how much conservative principles are worth to you? One point vs Obama?

You’re probably right. It’s probably time for social conservatives to forget about politics and direct their energies elsewhere. Time to give all my money to my church and forget Republican candidates. We’re not a constituency that either party has much use for. BTW, I’d stop using the term RINO. The people it’s directed against are clearly the dominant group, so this notion that “real” Republicans are something other than this dominant faction seems nonsensical. The Bush faction is/are the “real” Republicans, everybody else is just along for the ride.
