Though Gingrich and Romney throughout January engaged in some of the most personal attacks of the presidential primary campaign, Gingrich said Sunday that the two are at peace with one another.
"I hit him as hard as I could, he hit me as hard as he could -- turned out he had more things to hit with than I did," Gingrich said. "That's part of the business."
Gingrich said that if Romney wins 1,144 delegates and clinches the nomination, he will do "everything I can" to support him going into November.
"We are absolutely committed to defeating Barack Obama," he said. "I will work as hard for (Romney) as I would for myself."
He said he's already spoken with RNC Chairman Reince Priebus about how he can help going into November. "Beyond that ... I'll go back to a post-political career," Gingrich said.
Still, he said supporters are urging him to stay in.
"I do think there's a desire for a more idea-oriented Republican Party," Gingrich said.
Gingrich said he's seeing a "great response" in the upcoming primaries for Delaware and North Carolina, and will "see what happens" in those two states. Despite his comments Sunday, the candidate had recently told The Washington Post that "nothing" could get him out of the race quite yet.
Gingrich said he wants to campaign for changes in the party platform -- namely, to push for domestic energy production, to "stand up very firmly for religious liberty" and to reform the Social Security system.
Romney is leading the field with 660 delegates, according to the Associated Press tally. Rick Santorum is trailing with 281, followed by Gingrich with 135 and Ron Paul with 51.

A true statesman to be able to put everything behind him after a brutal primary. This must be our attitude as well, unless you willfully desire to see the destruction of our nation as we know it.
“I’m glad I did this,” Gingrich said of his decision to run, calling it “the right thing for me to do.”
Gingrich spoke openly about his campaign’s money troubles. He said the campaign has had to dip into personal funds — “a little bit, but not dramatically” — and that the campaign is “slightly less” than $4.5 million in debt.
“We owe much more than we wanted to,” Gingrich said. He explained that the Florida primary in late January
Gingrich lost that race, and so far has won just two primary contests — in South Carolina and Georgia.
Gingrich said his campaign won’t “go broke” and that he’ll raise money after the election in order to pay off his debt.
Now that he has succeeded in dividing the conservative vote, his job is done.
Everything, including all principle.

Very hard to find enough $10, $25 and $100 contributors to make up for the loss of one billionaire casino owning sugar daddy. That’s not a slam on Newt, that’s just fact.
This is the real tragedy, and if it continues, we will be ruined by a second Obama term.
He is 4.5 million is debt. Why doesn’t he just get out of the race? He isn’t going to win anything.
Must be an attention thing.
Romney is not my first choice or even my second choice, but I have to agree with Newt that we must defeat President Obama in the fall. If we find that Romney’s policies are not conservative enough for us, we need to work hard to oppose them; but for now, I think we are stuck with Romney. Bill Ayers gets up every morning and thinks that this may be the last day we have capitalism. We should get up every morning and think what can we do to make sure our children grow up in a free society. Bill Ayers works each day to make his vision of America come true. If we don’t do the same, Bill Ayers will win. There is no end to this fight.
There will be a nice raise in his speaking and public appearance fees, a new book or two, maybe one for Callista too, and many offers for consulting services. Not to mention the opportunity to sit back and say “I told you so” for the next however many years... All good for Newt.
The simple fact is that Romney isn’t going to win no matter how desperately the self appointed GOP overseers scream, cry, and accuse.
One would think that it was obvious, since he already had lost his Senate seat by a record number as well as had run under 2% for about 9 straight months. That, and the other impulse candidates like Cain, Bachmann, etc,.
The base has become too unstable to command any party. They have become a heard of cats.
You bet we’re stuck with Romney. I’d like to be proven wrong in my thinking that Mittens was told 4 years ago that 2012 would be his turn......that McCain was the chosen one in the last election. Wonder if the power brokers (you know, the ones that choose and delagate choices years ahead of time) have chosen our candidate for 2016. Politics at it’s worst!
Kudos to Newt for making this patriotic and realistic statement.
I admire him even more for that. He gave it a good shot but our two best candidates couldn’t do it (Newt and Perry).
So I will support Romney bolstered by a mental image of 4 more years of Barak and Michelle.
This is going to result in another wave of people on our side making common cause with the leftist fringe-wackos to “get the money out of politics”.
The last time that became the dynamic it gave us Ross Perot.
I would greatly support that effort myself.
The candidate with the highest ratio of ‘very conservative’ supporters is none other than Rick Santorum.
Yes, Newt has divided the conservative vote, to the benefit of Romney.
See Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Wyoming, Alaska and Washington.
If the Newt supporters had supported Santorum, they could have defeated Romney in 6 more states. Newt has only delievered 2 and has cost ‘team conservative’ 6 states.
He needs to sport a hicky for a few days
A run for President, especially an interesting one like Newt’s is always good for the future.
Newt will probably get a spot on Fox, maybe even a show. It happened to Huckabee, and while I like Huckabee, Newt would have a far more interesting show.
Perry has a good job, Michele didn’t make it far enough, Herman Cain blew it, but I think Newt will come out of this better known and more popular.
As for Santorum, I can’t really imagine where he can or will go from here.
