“U.S. military goes on cyber offensive”
By ZACHARY FRYER-BIGGS | Last Updated:March 26, 2012
SNIPPET: “Confronted with 10 million cyber attacks per day, the Defense Department is changing its tack.”
SNIPPET: “Part of that aggressive posture comes in the form of arming combatant commanders allowing for broader access to capabilities, more rapid action and the pairing of traditional kinetic attacks with newly developed cyber capabilities.
Although Alexander only alluded to the effort in his prepared remarks, it was confirmed by sources.
CYBERCOM will establish Cyber Support Elements (CSEs) at all six combatant commands.
Thus far, U.S. Central Command in the Middle East is the only command with a fully operational element, while U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) has a partial element, a CYBERCOM spokesman confirmed.
These support elements will provide technical capability and expertise, part of an effort to improve the integration of cyber attack capabilities, a source with knowledge of the efforts said.”

SNIPPET: “”All of them essentially went down” as of March 23, said Aaron Zelin, a researcher at the politics department at Brandeis University.
The outage hit a number of online forums including two “flagship” sites, al-Fida and Shamukh al-Islam, which serve as a channel for Al-Qaeda forums, providing a stamp of approval for any associated sites, Zelin said.”
SNIPPET: “The digital sabotage could have been carried out by any number of governments or private hackers, said James Lewis, director of the technology and public policy program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“There are some many potential suspects,” Lewis told AFP.”

“Al Qaeda site says enemies of Allah took it down”
AFP | 2 days ago
SNIPPET: “HONG KONG: One of al Qaedas main Internet sites has accused enemies of Allah of taking it down for several days, but said it was now back up stronger than ever, according to a US monitoring service on Thursday.
Researchers who track jihadist movements said this week that Shamukh al-Islam, one of al Qaedas two main websites, went dark on March 23 and reappeared online on Monday April 2.
The unprecedented blackout was most likely the result of a cyber attack, either by a government or by private hackers, the experts in the United States said.”

Text penned by longtime jihadist and explosives guru Abdullah Dhu al-Bajadin”
BY JOSEPH STRAW AND ROCCO PARASCANDOLA / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

SNIPPET: “The first installment to circulate through jihadist online circles is ominously titled Al Qaeda Airlines and features an image of a silhouetted twin-engine airliner climbing into the sunset. The 73-page text was penned by longtime jihadist and explosives guru Abdullah Dhu al-Bajadin, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist Web traffic. The mysterious figure is credited with writing an Internet encyclopedia of terror tradecraft, and once fielded online questions about bomb-making from wanna-be evildoers.
The first installment outlines chemistry fundamentals and a recipe for the poisonous anesthetic chloroform.
We chose that because the beginner mujahid can prepare it at home using materials that are available in grocery stores and supermarkets, the author wrote, according to a SITE translation.”
