MILLER: Sticker shock at the pump: Obama and Democratic Senate push for higher gas prices
Washington Times ^ | Thursday, March 29, 2012 | Emily Miller

Americans today are paying an average $3.92 for a gallon of regular gas. The pain of watching the number at the pump tick ever higher doesn’t seem to be shared by President Obama or his allies on Capitol Hill. Democrats see the sky-high cost of petrol as a way to force other people to get around by public transportation and electric cars. Thankfully, they don’t have the support to get away with it.

Just before a Thursday vote in the Senate to hike taxes on oil companies, the president appeared in the Rose Garden to make his case. “Today members of Congress have a simple choice to make,” said Mr. Obama. “They can stand with the big oil companies, or they can stand with the American people.” He claimed energy manufacturers would absorb the new taxes rather than passing them on to the consumer in the form of higher gas prices.

Apparently, Mr. Obama’s speech wasn’t very inspiring. Four Senate Democrats joined all Republicans in opposing the procedural measure, leaving it nine votes short of the 60 needed. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell believed the Democratic-controlled Senate was wasting precious time carrying water for Mr. Obama. “Somehow they thought that doing this would set up some kind of a political win for them,” the Kentucky Republican said on the floor. “I can’t imagine anybody giving them any high-fives for not lowering the price of gas.”

After all the caterwauling about gas prices during the Bush Administration, I’m absolutely amazed at how placidly Americans are reacting this time around. There’s some low-level annoyance, but no real anger.

Mr. President: You’re an idiot. If you think something like the demand for distillate fuels is not going to see tax increases passed onto consumers, you’re an idiot. If you really want to help the American people, the following would really help: 1) by Executive Order, open up drilling everywhere in the US, including the Gulf, ANWR, and offshore, 2) get rid of the EPA, 3) reduce all gov’t permitting processes to a max of two months, 4) resign.

Well at lest now you can cut back on your driving and spend more time at home but when the Obama’s EPA shuts down all of those coal fired power plants you want be able to afford to heat and cool your home. I guess we could all go and stay in a government run shelter

Well, who can afford to go anywhere, anyway? I wonder if 0bama has thought through the fact that all the money people are spending on gas, is money they cannot spend in the rest of the economy.... which will lead to higher unemployment, etc...

hussein (of Congress): “They can stand with the big oil companies, or they can stand with the American people.” He claimed energy manufacturers would absorb the new taxes rather than passing them on to the consumer in the form of higher gas prices.

hussein, you're a liar, a fool, or both. If you really believe companies work that way, by just absorbing higher costs, you're a fool. If you don't really believe that, then you just stood in front of Congress and the American people and lied - again. The lies spewing forth from your pie-hole are so egregious, so prevalent, that it almost isn't worth noting. Literally, if hussein's lips are moving, he's probably lying.

Quit trying to demonize big oil. In fact, quit trying to demonize {insert group here}. That shtick is getting very, very old.

Allart of the plan - they don't care about the responsible citizens. The main plan seems to tip the scale so that folks who need "government assistance" are the absolute majority so they can ensure a few million extra voters on the side of nanny-statism.

We are prepared and will survive whatever Mr. Obama does....though I fully expect his defeat in November.

Bush didn’t have the MSM kissing his butt during that time, that’s the biggest difference.

The press would have whipped the perpetually ignorant into a frenzy by now if Bush was in office with these prices.

Yes....and I’m beginning to think all of this is more than simple utopian nanny-statism. I pray that the LIGHT may shine into every corner of darkness where plans are being made and carried out.

Instead, their bill used the majority of the money to increase the subsidies to their political allies in the intermittent energy business.

I like that phrasing.
