Trayvon Martin: Spike Lee Settles With Family Forced to Flee Home
The Los Angeles Times ^ | Thursday, March 29, 2012 | Michael Muskal

Posted on 03/29/2012 1:33:25 PM PDT by kristinn

Spike Lee has reached an agreement with the Florida couple forced to flee their home after the film director retweeted their home address and they fled to a hotel to avoid problems associated with the shooting of Trayvon Martin, it was announced Thursday.

Elaine and David McClain, in their 70s, left their Sanford, Fla., home after their address was tweeted by a man who thought he had found the home of George Zimmerman, the 28-year-old who shot Martin, 17. Lee then retweeted the McClains’ address to his followers on Twitter.

The McClains have a son, William George Zimmerman, who is not related to the George Zimmerman who shot Martin and whose arrest is being sought by Martin’s family and civil rights supporters.

“The McClains’ claim is fully resolved,” Matt Morgan, their attorney, said in an email. “Mr. Lee personally called them to give a very heartfelt apology. Further, he agreed to compensate them for their loss and the disruption to their lives.

“The McClains were very moved by Mr. Lee's apology,” Morgan said. “They would like the Lee family to be left in peace,” Morgan said.

Earlier, Morgan had said that the McClains wanted to resolve the issues with Lee quickly to illustrate that whites and blacks could work together to settle their differences without escalating racial tensions

One major Obama fundraiser (Morgan) negotiating with another major Obama fundraiser (Lee) to make the problem go away ASAP.

At least he apologized.

I wonder if his silence earlier was due to ongoing negotiatins with the family.

I’m imagining that people are going online to “google” George Zimmerman’s name in an effort to find his address. There’s a problem with this. In my case, just about every address I’ve ever lived at — however briefly — continues to be listed on some of these sites. Places I haven’t lived for over 25 years. Old information never dies in the internet. Moreover, these sites do not give dates, so it’s difficult to decide which is the current address.

What sort of settlement was reached? Was money involved?

If money was involved, how much are we talking about?

How the heck did this get done so quickly?

Is Spike a multi-millionaire? I have no idea how wealthy that guy is, but could it be an offer they couldn’t refuse was made?

Perhaps it’s all legal and legit, whatever the settlement is. But, with lack of details, it makes me think that they were paid a big sum of money. And that this payoff will buy their silence. Meaning, among other things, no media interviews by this couple, no discussion of what sorts of threats made them decide to leave their house, or any of that.

Seems to me they were also profoundly “moved” by his first incorrect tweets.

How do you accept an apology from a guy who doesn’t think his race-baiting is the problem, just that he got the address wrong?

Can anyone name even two Spike Lee films other than Do The Right Thing, without a web search or the like?

Can anyone name even one other film by Lee than made money?

His best work was in ads for shoes and “She’s Gotta Have It” — basically because he disappeared into the funny character of Mars Blackmon. “Is it the shoes? Gotta be the shoes.”

Why he still is paid attention to, more than any other has-been (never-really-was), is beyond me.

Apology NOT accepted.

Spike still has evil intentions against the real George Zimmerman.

And unless and until he apologizes for his idiot intentions to harm the real victim (Zimmerman) then Lee has not done enough.

Lee should be arrested for endangerment at the least and attempted murder and the most. He would have published the right address if he had had it. If the real Zimmerman had been killed Lee would have been partially to blame - and what about Zimmerman’s freak’n family. That low life animal would have put an innocent family in the line of fire. I know Lee was hoping Zimmerman was white but, oops he’s hispanic - where’s the uproar among los amigos? Nothing? All this is MHO of course.

Interesting. Spike Lee, racist extraordinaire, will pay these people for his royal screw-up and illegal act, but he won't pay the $3+ Million in back taxes he owes his buddy, Obama.

What sort of settlement was reached? Was money involved? If money was involved, how much are we talking about?

It'll be kept quiet unless one side wants to leak it. Usually they don't. That's standard procedure in torts.

How the heck did this get done so quickly?

Spike screwed up bad and he knows it. His attorney also knows it. McClains and their lawyer talked to Spike's attorney. A claim may not have even been filed because this was cut and dry. Going to court is a pain, and Spike doesn't want this to go to a jury. Most cases settle. Is Spike a multi-millionaire? I have no idea how wealthy that guy is, but could it be an offer they couldn’t refuse was made?

I don't know what was asked, but it probably was close to the amount in damages inflicted if not the full amount because Spike has deep pockets.

Perhaps it’s all legal and legit, whatever the settlement is. But, with lack of details, it makes me think that they were paid a big sum of money. And that this payoff will buy their silence.

That's common practice. Corporations settle all the time. They don't want a trial and the court costs, uncertainty, and lawyer fees that come with it. You never know what a jury will do.

Meaning, among other things, no media interviews by this couple, no discussion of what sorts of threats made them decide to leave their house, or any of that.

True. Most people also aren't fans of the media, don't want to be on camera, and deal with the scrutiny that comes with it. Often mouths staying shut are part of settlement claims. That's usually not a problem for anybody. Both sides want to move on.

He wasn’t arrested. He was detained, questioned, and released. At that time, there was either not enough probable cause to arrest him, or the DA didn’t think there was enough for a conviction. That may or may not change as more information comes out.

That's nice that the McClains were paid. Kumbaya.

It's nice that the McLains would like the Lee family to be left in peace. Kumbaya.

Why didn't the McLains ask the Lee family to leave the Zimmerman family in peace? That family is as scared now as the McClains were before they became wealthy.

I’m imagining that people are going online to “google” George Zimmerman’s name in an effort to find his address. There’s a problem with this.

I've googled my name in the past and hit over 28 other matches to people with the same name match. Probably a lot more out there now. My wife's name was identical to another patient in her doctor's office, and the office was sending the other woman's bills to us for payment. My daughter got married, and now has the same name as her sister-in-law.

Googling is highly inaccurate for finding any one individual, unless you can also identify by pictures and fingerprints. My name has turned up hits for doctors, lawyers, movie producers, artists and decent folk. So far, none are killers or wanted criminals (at least, so far).

Being taken into custody temporarily is not the same as being arrested. I know what you’re getting at. The libs act like nothing was done to him, and they let him go at the scene. Standard procedure to cuff him for transportation to the police station for questioning, then let go because no basis to hold him further. Close-ups of the video brandished by MSM of George being transported do indeed show trauma to the back of his head, although medics cleaned the blood. MSM has an agenda, and will always hide facts from the public, or will simply ignore the facts.

The tweeting incident involving the McClains pitted privacy rights against social activism and was a sidelight to the furor over the shooting of Martin on Feb. 26.

What social activism? Social activism is when one protests or works for a political campaign. Spike Lee was calling out his lynch mob hommies to do a job. Nice of the LA Times to go to bat for Spike.
