DETROIT (WJBK) -- It happened around 1:00 a.m. Wednesday. Willie White said he only had one bullet in his gun, but that one bullet was enough to protect himself and his family.
"I put one bullet in the gun just in case. I was hoping I wouldn't have to use it," he remarked.
However, the 75-year-old was given no other choice. He said he and his wife were in bed when they he heard a banging noise near the side door. He instantly knew what was happening.
"Somebody's trying to break-in," he explained.

"I grabbed a gun and ran towards the side door," he said. The door was suddenly kicked in and that's when he fired the rifle.
"I shot and it hit him in the shoulder," White told us. "When I shot, I heard I don't know who it might have been saying he's been hit, and they ran out the driveway."
White called 911, but there was nothing anyone could do to save the suspected burglar. Detroit police identify him only as an 18-year-old male. They found a gun on him.
White knows he did what he had to do, but for a man who never fired a gun before, this is something that's hard to deal with.
"I'm not comfortable with it at all because I had a son that was murdered in 2010," he said. "I was just glad that I was able to protect us because he obviously meant to do some harm."
Police did confiscate White's gun as part of their investigation. That's usual procedure. The case will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office, but odds are White will not face any criminal charges.

The odds are very high that this was a black man defending his home and wife, and he performed a community service for his neighbors, who are also probably black. Well, there’s no story there. So, I can see the headline now:

This is something like the 35th time in a year that a citizen as protected their liberty with the 2nd Admendment within the City of Detroit, and of these times mentioned the perps all ended up working the night shift..
Maybe their are some pressures from Detroit and Law Inforcement not to give this additional visibility because of this trend...

I truly feel sorry for this guy and the rest of the law abiding citizens who are trapped in this city, the majority of whom are the elderly whose houses can't be sold and have no money in which to purchase another outside of the city.
FWIW, having spent 35 years in a plant on Detroit's east side, I know at least a dozen employees who have been murdered during my time there.......Of the last two, one was robbed and shot down two months before our plant closed in Dec. 2006 and the other was a guy who retired a year before and was found stabbed to death in his apartment in approx. Jan. 2007........

This thug would have probably killed a few productive people and cost his victims/taxpayers millions over his lifetime. Not to mention the damages from his future feral children, grandchildren, etc. Now he's 6 feet under with the most minimal of expense.

They should have to give him a loaner if they take his weapon. They leave him defenseless. And the mdeia lets everyone know he is now unarmed. This is just not right to do to the victim. It’s like publishing the address and home phone of a rape victim and where they work.

Exactly. Now, when the criminal's associates and relatives might be looking for revenge, it is important that the defender not be disarmed.
At a minimum they should provide a replacement of the same cartridge or have to provide ammo in addition to a similar weapon. They'd be more likely to return your weapon (and sooner) if you had one of their's.
