That famous Hope poster is based on an Associated Press photograph and they are suing them.
I think that's the current case, but he's had other arrests for graffiti vandalism, and copyright suits are to be expected when your "art" involves appropriating images created by other people -- images of still other people who also didn't give their permission.
A troubled (middle-aged) boy. His father's name is Frank Strait Fairey, and he goes by F. Strait Fairey. Young Fairey must have been teased mercilessly in school.

Fairey copped to destroying electronic records and creating phony documents in an attempt to stymie the lawsuit, which accused him of basing the Obama artwork on an AP photo.Exactly what you're told NOT to do in any subpoena for documents. FAIL.

He was the same vandal behind the Andre The Giant Has A Posse sticker campaign.
Same lemmings, different "leader". Both were illegally posted.
Andre had nothing to do with Fairey's actions then, Barack DID approve of them KNOWING they were illegally posted on stop signs and elsewhere.
Barack's call for a civil and respectful tone in politics is empty because he hired the man responsible for the FEAR BUSH sticker campaign.
