At 71, former Vice President Dick Cheney was older than average for a heart transplant, but doctors said on Sunday that advances in care have made it possible for older patients to still be good transplant candidates.

And not only was he older than the typical patient, but he waited longer than average as well -- 20 months vs six months to a year.

Doctors said Cheney must have been...

Good article addressing the age issues and the length of time the Dick Cheney waited (longer than most).

Under Obamacare, Cheney would still be waiting— and may not have ever gotten his transplant if the “death panels” had taken root.

Yeah...may this new heart give Dick Cheney another 50 years to torment the crap out of them. He doesn’t even have to say anything, just be around is enough to drive them into spasms.

Hmm...lucky he didn’t chance waiting until SCOTUS decided...ya think maybe, just maybe the death panel would have ruled against Cheney getting that heart?

You would think Cheney having a change of heart would be a good thing in the progressive community.

Some liberal sites comments are expressing frustration that Dick Cheney got a heart transplant.

Now we see this story that suggests he was too old at age 71 to get a transplant. Next we undoubtedly will hear that Cheney took healthcare resources from sicker or poorer people.

This is the mindset which will set up “death panels”. Some bureaucrat under Obamacare would have decided if Dick Cheney is allowed to have this life saving surgery, not his doctors, family, and himself.

Were liberals outraged when Sarah Palin talked of death panels, because they were shocked anyone could think of such a thing? Or were liberals outraged because that was the plan, but liberals didn’t want anyone to know that?

You know, I just love this culture.

Where every decision is displayed in the national media and then dissected for being appropriate (or not).

Nahh..Not with Dick Cheney. As one of the MSLSD madmen said: they should rip his heart out, play football with it and then stuff it back in him. Cute huh?

I hope the news of this caused anguish. deep in the empty wasteland of the liberal soul. I hope they screamed, like they will be doing the night it is learned that there is a new AMERICAN BORN PRESIDENT. 6 months after the Supreme's said, health care premiums forced on a free people is wrong.

A hat trick, 3 goals. Unanswered - America

My wife's family has been intimately involved in the heart transplant miracle.

Her brother was one of the early recipients of an LVAD pump, at a time that the technology was in its early stages. The pump was too big for the cavity in his abdomen and he had several problems with closing the incision. He spent almost the whole last year of his life awaiting a transplant. He died six years ago.

Four years ago, my wife's sister had a deteriorating heart condition that only a transplant would recify. She did receive a transplant from a young donor and our family has lived through the roller coaster of emotions from the anxiety of being told of a possible match of a donor to the disappointment of later learning that it was a no-go. This happened several times.

To those not familiar with the procedure (as we were not) there is only a four hour window to evaluate the condition of the deceased donor; matching the critical factors including DNA markers; transporting members of the transplant team to the location of the donor and removing the donor heart; transporting the heart to the hospital for the recipient; verifying that the heart is still good and then removing the deseased heart and performing the transplant.

She recently celebrated the fourth anniversary of the successful operation. Our family has been given a window into this remarkable achievement of the Medical Profession and we pray daily for all those dedicated individuals who perform and support this path to a quality life for very ill people.

A reading of this experience is described in Heartfelt: A Journey Through Transplantation.
