Times Call ^ | March 23, 2012

There have been two plane crashes in Longmont, according to police scanner traffic. One of those crashes has happened south of the intersection of County Line Road and Colo. Highway 119, near the Walmart Supercenter. Another has been reported at Vance Brand Airport. According to scanner traffic and Longmont dispatch, an airplane struck power lines near the city's service center just south of the airport. A reporter on the scene at the airport said wreckage is visible from Airport Road. The Times-Call has reporters and photographers at both scenes. Watch timescall.com for more information.

I forget that not everybody travels the states and gets to see and become familiar with the dynamic, high-tech, high-growth areas outside the old urban state capitals.

Now THIS guy is a very good witness:

Kim Johnson, another witness who had been riding his bike southeast of Longmont, emailed 9News today:

“Heard a plane practicing a stall. Looked up, saw two planes. Looked up, one plane, a Cessna Skyhawk, had a wing clipped off it.

It spiraled in to the ground. Another plane circled, seemed to be fine, couldn't see any damage to that plane. ...

“I heard the engine rev on one of the planes. I looked up and I noticed that the one plane was trying to avoid the other plane, but then I noticed that the one wing was gone.”

“I knew what had happened. I believe that somehow there was a collision between the two planes. It's unbelievable that two place could not see each other.”

You left this out....

“Johnson said he believes that one of the pilots chose to “throttle up,” likely to avoid the collision.
Johnson, who has flown in and out Vance Brand Airport for 16 years, said the area is frequently used to practice stalling. Because the Cessna is a “high wing” aircraft and the other plane is a “low wing” aircraft, each has blind spots and that might have led to the accident, he said.
“It’s a scene that plays out between high and low wing a lot. Sometimes you don’t see them at first.”

Longmont is 40 miles NW of Denver. You’re thinking of Fort Collins which is just over 60 miles north of Denver.

I am not very familiar with the Denver / Longmont area, My visits were always in the Pueblo to San Isabel area. But I confess my first thoughts were to wonder if paparazzi were attempting to get aerial pics of Blago in prison and collided.

They wouldn’t need planes when they have traffic helicopters in Denver.

I lived in Longmont for about a year and a half. Most folks might get a better idea if we say its closer to Boulder than Denver.

NP...as a pilot who has owned a a plane for close to 15 years... I found your comment curious....

Most of these type of accidents occur at a small uncontrolled field thet pilots aren’t following established procedure....

Longmont is about 25 miles northeast of the People’s Republic of Boulder.

Hello fellow FReeper. I too work not far from the Longmont airport.

I’ve seen more aircraft accidents in good weather than bad weather. I think this is because fair weather pilots are trying to shake off the rust after being grounded for months.
