Gorgeous weather here right now. Sunny and calm. I was just making plane reservations myself for later this afternoon. Sad to think we’d have accidents on a day like today.

You’d almost have to think mid-air, and probably small planes.

That's what local TV is reporting. They say news crews are enroute. Crystal clear out here today.

LONGMONT— Two airplanes crashed in Longmont this morning, apparently within minutes each other.

One of those planes crashed near the intersection of County Line Road and Great Western Driver, in southeast Longmont. The other crashed near the city's services building, just east of Airport Road near Rogers Road. It is not known if the two crashes are related, and there is no word on the condition of anyone on either plane.

Sheri Collard was driving north on Main Street, approaching Ken Pratt Boulevard when she saw a plane fly low overhead, heading west.

“It was extremely low for the section of town it was in. I knew it wasn't right,” The scene of a plane crash along airport road on the property of the city garage Friday at noon. she said. “I was Ken Pratt and Main Street. It was pretty low, maybe 100 feet. It was extremely low. ... I thought, that's not right. It was a slow speed and seemed unstable.”

That happened about 11:45 to 11:50 a.m., she said.

Collard said she was heading toward the Walmart on Colo. Highway 119 at County Line Road. There, she saw three fire engines responding with sirens, but did not know what had happened on that side of town. “When you see three engines, you know it's something big.” She did not know there had been a second plane crash.

Kim Johnson, another witness who had been riding his bike southeast of Longmont, emailed 9News today:

“Heard a plane practicing a stall. Looked up, saw two planes. Looked up, one plane, a Cessna Skyhawk, had a wing clipped off it.

It spiraled in to the ground. Another plane circled, seemed to be fine, couldn't see any damage to that plane. ...

“I heard the engine rev on one of the planes. I looked up and I noticed that the one plane was trying to avoid the other plane, but then I noticed that the one wing was gone.”

“I knew what had happened. I believe that somehow there was a collision between the two planes. It's unbelievable that two place could not see each other.”

The second plane, a single prop, came down just northeast of the airport, near the main entrance of Vance Brand Airport. The sole occupant and pilot is a woman who has been transported to Longmont United Hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Longmont Police Capt. Tim Lewis said the plane approaching the airport from the east when it clipped a power line at Airport Road and crashed and rolled several times before coming to a stop.

NTSB officials are on their way to the scene.

The power line is down east of the airport, but there is no word about power outages in the area.

So it sounds like there was a mid-air, one plane spun immediately in, and the other tried to get back to the airport and clipped a wire...?

Why should this surprise you? Longmont is not that big of a city. It is not noted for anything particular, nor is there anything really newsworthy there. I know where Longmont is only because I once lived in Estes Park. It is not like it is Denver or Salt Lake City.

I can’t say I am familiar with Longmont. I have been to Estes Park, though. (Rocky Mountain National Park)
