Santorum Suggests Obama Preferable to "Etch-A-Sketch" Romney.

Rick Santorum's latest attempt to use a Mitt Romney aide's "Etch-A-Sketch" remark against the Republican front-runner instead gave his rival a chance to fire back on Thursday, after Santorum seemed to say he'd rather see President Obama reelected than send Romney to the White House.

Speaking at an event in Texas, Santorum again made the case that Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom's comments Wednesday on CNN about a "reset" of the campaign if Romney clinched the nomination showed the former Massachusetts governor's efforts to appeal to conservatives were insincere.

"You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there," Santorum told a crowd in San Antonio, according to NBC News. "If you're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch-A-Sketch candidate of the future."

And apparently many here on FR agree ... those that refuse to vote for Romney in the general election if he gets the GOP nomination.

I'm not sure they're Santorum or Newt supporters, they just are very determined not to have to take one for the team again. I think eventually, though, the reality of what another 4 years of Obama will mean will eventually sink in, and they will do the right thing. They are patriots at heart, I truly believe.

Santorum is 100% correct. Can someone explain the differences between Romney and Obummer when it gets down it. Romney has made little issue of Obamacare. Romney is all for Cap and Tax. Romney is all for Man Made Global Warming. Romney is all for Mandates to force citizens to obey Govt. Romney is all for Abortion. Romney won’t even call Obummer a Socialist because his politics have mirrored his too closely. I don’t care what he says today. Just look at what he has actually done in his past.

Romney blows and everyone knows it. Even you folks here feigning “outrage” at Santorum finally saying out loud what we all have been saying here privately know he is right. Romney is a one way ticket to catastrophic failure in November.

Maybe people will start listening to me but I doubt it. Time to unite and focus on the House and Senate. Win a veto proof majority and shove it down Romney’s throat.

I agree CF.

Santorum is a sanctimonious dildo and he just proved it.

It's not that Santorum doesn't have a point.

The problem is, he doesn't seem to think you will mind joining him while he shrugs his shoulders and watches the ship sink.

He's out of his league. And he isn't thinking about what he's doing to the rest of us.

Rick Santorum: “Sure, I can come up with something every bit as stupid as Eric Fehrnstrom. Let me think a minute ... I got it! ‘If Mitt’s the Republican nominee, then you might as well vote for Obama!’ How’s that?”

this is what happens when rick isn't stealing newt's lines, and using Newt's ideas as his own during his speeches... people see how the Santorum brain works. Not too encouraging, is it?

“How is Obama worse than Romney?” Gee that is really hard to figure out after over 3 years of watching the News. But I really don’t expect Romney to be apologizing all around the world for the U.S.. And I think some people here are going overboard with ‘hating’ someone they have never met.

I’ve wanted Newt since 2008 anyway, but wow...I just lost any respect I ever had for Santorum.

Ditto, ditto ditto!

Stop wasting your time then and start working for Obama, because Santorum isn’t going to make it. Just three short years ago Santorum couldn’t give Romney enough praise. Now he is suggesting it is better to vote for Obama. He told us he was a team player, but what team is he on? This is inexcusable and reckless campaigning.

Yep. Goldwater destroyed Johnson and Reagan repealed all that GOP-E crap foisted upon the hallowed conservatives.

In the meantime, the left has systematically infiltrated every aspect of government and education for the last 70 years. You’re waiting for a true believer to convince the entire nation, and the Congress, that they don’t know what they’re doing in one Presidential election.

If Jim DeMint isn’t a conservative, who’ve you got?

I think I’ve figured out Santorum’s problem-—he’s a serial endorser!

Goodness me, Santorum is NOT a Christian Socialist, not even close. He was one of the more conservative senators in the Senate on multiple fronts. But not a pure free markets guy. He’s more like a Pat Buchanan lite.

I still think it is the best way to think about Santorum - it explains his funny (in the American context) combination of big government social conservatism, explicit hostility to libertarianism and the separation of Church and state, and support for unions. He's not only not a pure free markets guy, he's not any kind of friend of liberty.

Monty Python wrote of the dead parrot pining for the fjords, Santorum always seems to me to be pining for Pio Nono.

He does share a good deal with Buchanan, including jumping the shark, though I haven't detected the hints of antisemitism in Santorum one gets with Buchanan.

Agreed.

If a person waits for a true blue perfect Conservative to vote for for President, how long will that person be waiting?

50 years? 100?

I pray that you are correct. I don’t care for Mr. Etch a Sketch either, but I don’t want another 4 years of this administration.

Words fail? Words fail at all the posters on this thread who have the vapors over a simple statement that is true.

He’s saying if you don’t give voters a distinct choice, voters will stick with the guy they know vs someone who’s almost the same but has indicated they can change at will (etch a sketch reference)

I swear too many of you sound like a bunch of highschool girls, screaming OMG, OMG, OMG, with your hair on fire.

READ AND COMPREHEND ......

or.....you can all just keep bashing Santorum over nothing

.....which was really the point of this thread all along wasn’t it?

Do you really believe that Romney would tread on the constitution the way Obama does?

Do you believe that he would side with the Muslims if put to the test?

No, I am not a Romney supporter, but if he is our candidate come November, I will definitely be voting for him.

And the outrage at Santorum saying what he did? Think someone should tell him that he was hoping to run against OBAMA, not against Romney, nor against Newt or Ron Paul. And if he thinks that Obama is preferable to Romney, he is showing that he only cares about himself.

How is Obama worse than Romney? I keep asking this over and over again to people like you, but all I seem to get is the same party-line refrain over and over again.

Some people may be reluctent to defending Romney on this forum because they will get kicked off it. Another possibility is Romney's superiority over Obama is self-evident, and people are unwilling to try refuting your framed argument because they believe it is unlikely that any amount of truth will enlighten you.
