Miami High School Holds Moment of Silence For Trayvon Martin — Nearly One Month After Death

The Miami high school attended by Trayvon Martin, the student shot and killed by a neighborhood watch leader in Central Florida, held a moment of silence for Martin this morning, students and staff have told StateImpact Florida.

Students at Dr. Michael M. Krop High School say it is the first acknowledgement of Martin’s death since he was killed while visiting his father’s girlfriend’s home near Orlando.

The moment of silence comes nearly a month after Martin’s Feb. 26 death, and hours after StateImpact Florida asked the school district why the school had yet to publicly acknowledge Martin’s death on campus.

Students criticized the delay on Twitter:

I hate my school… Krop waited too long to acknowledge the situation of Trayvon. should have been done a moment of silence.. no excuses ! 21 Mar 12

Martin was suspended from school at the time he was shot, The Miami Herald has reported.

The school’s reaction differed for classmate Christopher Belle, who was struck and killed by a car in November, students told StateImpact Florida. The school orchestra collected donations for Belle’s family and a slideshow of Belle was shown at a performance.

“It was definitely different from what they are doing for Trayvon, which is nothing,” junior Ashley Aristide said before classes began Wednesday.

“It’s simpler to deal with something the way Christopher Belle died then the way Trayvon died,” she said. “I’m pretty sure that the school just doesn’t want to have that much commotion…because then learning in that environment would be really hard.”

StateImpact Florida has called the Miami-Dade school district for response, including whether the school followed district policy for grief counseling.

Many interesting comments on this article. Here is one:

really, so why is she showing pictures of him as an 11 year old? I have found one pic of him as a 6'3" 15 year old giving the middle finger. there are many other inconsistencies.

Will these pandering administrators hold MOS for the many crime victims of its student and alumni populations?

This is supposed to be a picture of Trayvon when he was 15 and 6 foot 3 inches tall. There are now several references to him as 6 foot, 3 inches tall. I really wonder at what age he was 140 pounds. Perhaps the truth will come out at some point.

I had no idea that the picture of the victim Trayvon was of him at age 11.

Public union employees run the school.

Scot Walker is right about them.

Who would have thought that the libs would call for a Moment of Silence in a public school?

I thought they were doing everything they could to prevent any kind of prayer, including even so-called moments of silence.

Does the ACLU know about this?

There is a full court press in the media in Florida for the legislature to “revisit” the hold your ground legislation. That is one of the by products of the hoopla dealing with this death.

Frankly, the guy was wrong to get involved in a foot persuit and probably foreced the issue. If that is so, he will be indicted either by the DA for manslaughter or if that fails to happen, watch for a civil rights violation to be brought by Holder’s DOJ.

trust me it seems the MSM fools our side too and those on our side still do not get it.

There is another thread with freepers stating that he is a 100 pounds lighter the guy was stalking this young man.

Note all the the keywords mentioned by a couple of freepers were used by the MSM,

very sad .

no chance that our law will be overturned here just because of the left attack and the NAACP attack on gun rights and self protection rights

The left is laying the ground work for their assault on the 2nd if he gets another term.

You might want to pay attention to the news...Gov Scott in response to a question from some lib reporter said he thinks all laws need to be looked at from time to time to determine if they are out of step. His deameanor on TV was such that he would be open to a change to the statute.

The press here has never liked this law because it gives too much power to the public...they rather you call 911 and wait till a cop arrives. Of course, when seconds count, the police are minutes away.

I hope their plans go astray but every day they keep this matter on the front burner is one more day they get to emphasize their agenda.

Mr. Obama and his attorney general will be long since gone before this case gets to trial.

The “School” monkeys didn’t care until this went bigtime and hit the national news. What a bunch of pathetic morons.

The national news, especially NBC with reports on both the Today Show and the Nightly News multiple times this week, is really carrying water for those who wish to keep racialism stirred up. It just sickens me and it does not really matter where the truth may be in this tragedy. Actually, the truth is just as much a victim here as Trayvon Martin.

.

While the Zimmerman ‘white’ on black killing is covered 24/7 on the MSM with an outpouring of rage and charges of a racial hate crime, where is the concern where is the rage about the home invasion, torture, beating and the murder of the elderlly white couple by blacks in Oklahoma just the other day?

The 90 year old war veteran husban was beaten, his jaw broken, shot in the face with a BB gun and clings to life.
The 85 year old partially blind wife was raped and beaten to death.

Where is the 24/7 MSM coverage

Where is the outrage?

agree the press have never liked the laws here and they would love to see this law overturned, however the law will never be overturned no matter how many times this race baiting fool Sharpton comes down.

Laws do need to be looked at from time to time but the press will use this to push their agenda and we never hear about the white kid on his way home who was attacked , had gas poured on him and called racist names then set alight.
Seems Sharpton and the DOJ only care when the black man is hurt and why do they keep putting the photo of him as a 13 year old, why not show the photo of him giving he middle finger and looking older and bigger?

Cos it doesn’;t fit their agenda

Yes he does. I have not seen a current picture of him. That one is supposed to be from 2-3 years ago.
