Thomas Sowell: Romney's Got the Money, But Newt's Got the Vision
Breitbart.com ^ | 3/21/2012 | Dr. Susan Berry

Mitt Romney has won the Illinois primary. But, the turnout of voters was dismally low. Given an incumbent Democratic president with an abysmal record, why aren't Republicans turning out in droves to vote in primary states for the man who many say is the "inevitable" nominee?

Conservative economist Thomas Sowell, author of Intellectuals and Society, recently challenged the notion that Mitt Romney is the “inevitable” Republican nominee, and, in doing so, the many pundits who have essentially told Newt Gingrich to drop out of the race “for the good of the Republican party.”

Dr. Sowell, a Harvard graduate and current senior fellow at the Hoover Institute, writes, “It is truer in this election than in most that ‘it takes a candidate to beat a candidate.’ And that candidate has to offer both himself and his vision. Massive ad campaigns against rivals is not a vision.”

Thomas Sowell is one of the greats that have endorsed Newt. The true conservatives and the brilliant are with the Speaker.

Great article! Thomas Sowell is indeed a national treasure! I shared the article with all I know. I check RealClerkPolitics almost daily. Mr. Newt is up from 13 to 15 today. I am not sure what that means in that most of the polls are all over the place.

Romney has really pulled a fast one on the nation. They will get what that voted for...an empty suit with no real ideas and not real vision except that he feels he is due the presidency. Jeb Bush endorsed him today...(as Gomer would say) SURPRISE, SURPRISE! Did anyone expect the Bush family of RINO’s to do anything else?

Our nation is in real trouble. Can America's eyes be opened before it is too late? Probably not, to our dismay.

Unfortunately, Americans hate “vision” and will not tolerate a visionary.

What Americans want is a vanilla personality with a glib tongue, oily hair, and a TV host personality - preferably one with no ideas at all, who won’t “rock the boat.”

Wow, in two sentences you captured the state of the current American culture. It’s a cynical view, but it finally explains to me perfectly the failure of Newt Gingrich, as the only one of the 4 who remain with a vision for the future. The two leaders now are perfectly milquetoast, and clones of each other, so much that I wonder what it is that’s preferable among so many members here in Saint Ricky the big gummint boy.

One thing to remember is the creme de la creme are supporting Newt. We are in good company.
Have always admired Sowell...he needs his own radio show:)
America is broke and the man that would turn things around is Newt; thoughts of anyone else are so discouraging.

That would be Romney or Santorum that Americans have foolishly voted for....at least those who even voted.

I'm close to a broken heart that Americans cannot discern our times nor the urgency....they are clearly willingly deceived by the ads Romneys running, the Media who are protecting Obamas Presidency ,which included their "lifting" Santorum up... in order to take out the very individual who can and would take Obama and this administration down..and that's Newt.....it really is heartbreaking for.. with folks supporting either Santorum or Romney they have taken the bait set to pull them in on the wrong side.

Thanks for the ping.

Nobody says it like Sowell!

“Sometimes caution can be carried to the point where it is dangerous. When the Super Bowl is on the line, you don't go with the quarterback who is least likely to throw an interception. You go with the one most likely to throw a touchdown pass.”

GO GO GO NEWT!!!

“The question is not which Republican looks better against Barack Obama in the polls today, before the general election campaign begins. The question is which Republican can take the fight to Barack Obama…” Dr. Sowell writes.

“The biggest fighting issue for Republicans is ObamaCare. Can the author of RomneyCare as governor of Massachusetts make that an effective issue by splitting hairs over state versus federal mandates?”

He contends that Gov. Romney has not extricated himself from the cloud of controversy surrounding RomneyCare, and that whatever funding he has will not be able to undo this.

Mitt Romney does not generally exhibit ease with the more non-economic, “heart of the nation,” national issues, a factor that likely affects his inability to convey a vision for the country that goes beyond what a CEO of a company might put forward. As Thomas Sowell recently told Fox Business News’ Neil Cavuto,

“I’m not at all impressed with how successful Romney has been in private industry. He’s not running for a job in private industry.”

Revolutions have a tendency to eat their leaders. Truly put into perspective what Speaker Gingrich accomplished and there is no other candidate who deserves support.
People complain about the lack of leadership in politics yet overlook this great man. It’s America that’s unworthy of Speaker Gingrich presidency, not the other way around. This is a time for transformation and need for visionaries.
As an aside, don’t ever doubt for a second Rush Limbaugh’s place as part of the Establishment. Think about the timing of his pseudo-endorsement of Santorum via his brother as a surrogate. That did more to stop Speaker Gingrich’s momentum coming off the South Carolina victory. Most rank and file Conservatives think the Sun shines out of Limbaugh’s ass. I can only say, “Et tu, Rush?”.

You got that right! I stopped listening to Rush after Bloody Thursday. I was absolutely shocked how he outright lied about the "tape of Newt" not being taken out of context. I viewed the entire youtube of what he referenced. I was livid how Rush just knowingly lied.

I am much happier not listening to that FAKE conservative. I was a fan for over 20 years. Rush has nothing new to teach me. For Rush it's ONLY about the money.

I stand with Dr. Sowell.

Love your “Heart and Sowell” post. At this point I am praying Newt will win 3 more states so he will have bartering power at the convention
