Top Romney adviser: Mitt will erase his conservative positions once he’s the nominee
WaPo ^ | 032112 | Greg Sargent

Think Progress flags an amazing exchange on CNN, in which Eric Fehrnstrom, a top adviser to Mitt Romney, seems to confirm that the conservative positions Romney has been forced to take during the primary won’t be a big deal because he can simply erase them once he becomes the GOP nominee:

HOST: Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?

FEHRNSTROM: Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again.

There you have it. Dems, predictably, are pouncing on the remark, arguing that it validates their message that Romney has no core and will say or do anything to get elected.

This isn't quite fair. The question was whether he'd be pulled too far to the right to reach the middle. It's bog standard political theory a partisan runs further Left or Right to get his party's nomination and moves away once the nomination is captures. This statement is nothing new or unique to Romney.

Romney's career? Now that means everything.

Well, yeah. That's what everybody here has been saying for years.
Romney is a liberal who simply cannot be trusted.

No, and neither would Rick Santorum. Milt is even less exciting than Juan McCain. He is a phony, and NOT what America needs, and I’m disgusted that so many Reps have been swayed by big money advertising. Bob

I cause my liberal friends to go into catatonic shock when I tell them that I would vote for Obama rather than Mitt. I explain that I want to get the real thing rather than an imitation and all Mitt is is an Obama wannabbee. So I would vote for Obama.

ps. Thank God there will be an independent candidate because I would rather slash my wrists than vote for Obama, but I don't tell them that.

Rick’s attacks against Milt have not been tough enough. His abominable judicial picks has been virtually ignored. Well, I’ll be seeing Rick Friday, so hopefully I’ll get a chance to talk with him. Bob

“Did Reagan do this?”

According to Mark Levin (about a week ago), yes, Reagan did this.

Levin said “Yes, even Reagan moved toward the Center.”

However, Reagan was a conservative, whereas McRomney is a RINO leftist from MASS.

Levin said that he chose Bush to unite the two wings. That is NOT altering one’s own message. Bob

And that would be ok if I trusted he would govern conservatively. I just don’t trust him.

a lot of Freepers even after reading this will still vote for Mitt if he gets the nomination, and rationalize it by thinking anything is better than Obama.

What would you suggest we do instead, vote third-party? Stay home? Convince ourselves that 4 more years of Obama (no longer constrained by any re-electability concerns) would be better than 4 (or 8) years of Romney?

** -- begin sarcasm --

but he said he was 'severely conservative!!'

** -- end sarcasm --

... but then a severe conservative would never be endorsed by the likes of John McCain, Jeb Bush, Bob Dole or Lisa Murkowski.

Romney lies.

What’s weird is Mitt (and apperently his staff) have some wierd disconnect from normal humans, probably rooted in a very real personality disorder. They can’t seem to grasp how normal humans will view them and the urges which motivate them. It’s kind of funny because it produces moments like this where they openly admit to their lack of principles, and seem confused that anyone else finds it unusual.

Mitt does this all the time. Laughingly tells the story of his dog and the terror he put it through on top of the car. Stops mid-speech, looks down, squashes a bug just do do it, then laughs to the corwd, and says Look how I got that little guy! Brings a stuffed squirrel to a speech to highlight his varmint hunting days.

It really is like the Romney campaign is some cabal of space alien automatons trying to take over the world. But none of them is quite convincing enough to actually come off as human, and we’re all left scratching our heads.

Sad thing is the media is going to Dan Quale him something fierce once the general begins.

Absolutely, Reagan did exactly this......

There is no way to win an election in this country on a divisive, fringe platform, to either side. No way, no how.

It is a political reality. Even Obama was sold as a moderate, Washington outsider who promised to make changes that would favor both sides. After Obama was elected, he went so far to the Left, so fast, that not even the Left fully believes it.

This isn’t about anything but “electoral positioning”. In the regular voting (Not FR) world, Romney is moderate Republican. He has taken a number of conservative positions on the campaign and talked them up, giving the 99& of the electorate who pay little attention that he has taken some “right-wing” positions on this and that. This adviser is basically saying “he’s really not a right-winger like some of the 99% of the electorate who pays little attention may think, he’s really a pragmatic moderate Republican.”

“What has he done” has little to do with it. It is “what has he said.”

...except in this case Mitt ran to the middle during the primary and will run back to the left for the general.
