Gingrich goes all in for big North Carolina prize; a question and answer
McClatchy Newspapers ^ | March 20, 2012 | Rob Christensen

Posted on 03/20/2012 10:08:54 PM PDT by true believer forever

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia said Tuesday that he plans to start campaigning in North Carolina next week ahead of the state's May 8 GOP presidential primary. He talked by phone with staff writer Rob Christensen about his prospects, his differences with the other candidates, and his hopes for a brokered convention.

"Look, Sen. Santorum voted against the right to work law. He voted for every minimum wage increase. He actually offered a minimum wage increase of 21 percent himself. He voted consistently for Davis-Bacon to help big labor and increased the cost of construction for every local government in the country. He even voted against waiving Davis-Bacon in emergency situations like Hurricane Katrina. I think we represent sort of different wings of conservatism." (Davis-Bacon is a 1931 law that requires governments to pay the prevailing local wage on public works projects.)

"My proposals are much bolder than his. My American energy plan would lead to $2.50 or less per gallon of gasoline and is much bolder than either Romney or Santorum. My proposal for a 15 percent flat tax as an option is bolder. My proposal to replace the civil service laws with a modern management system is much bolder. So I really represent more of the Reagan visionary stream of conservatism. And that makes me disinclined to want to get out of the race."

With only 120 delegates to his name, Gingrich needs to pack it in. This is becoming an embarrassment.

He better win a few more states. Without 5 wins, he can’t do much at the convention.

I thought he said the “era of Reagan is over.” Now he is invoking him.

This is becoming an embarrassment.

I guess we all have our notions of what embarrassment means.. to me, it's listening to Santorum use more of Newt's lines, more of Newt's quotes, more of newt's ideas in his speeches and presentations than his own, increasingly, everyday.

With only other people's ideas to fuel his campaign, Santorum needs to pack it in til he can think for himself and present ideas which are truly his own, not copied, plagiarized or stolen from his mentor. Speaking of embarrassment and all...

Just not understanding this Newt/Santorum food fight, looking pretty dismal for either of them.

Pray for America

I am not going to take the time to explain the context of that remark... or Newt’s history with Reagan, or actually anything... I don’t debate or try to educate Santorum supporters any more, lost cause, closed minds, stubborn and sanctimonious. I hope you understand.

Keep going, Newt, deny Romney delegates. Three way splits are not going to beat Romney. The only chance is to don't let Mitt get the total delegates. Newt, keep going-some of us understand what you are trying to do after FLA. The media hates you-the party hates that you are doing this to precious Mittens. Nothing matters now, take delegates. Newt focus on how Romney is tearing the republican party to the seams with his Romneycare. Time to pour it on Mittens.

Speaker Ego couldn’t win AL or MS. So now he’s trying for NC.

Agreed. During the debates, Gingrich answered questions directly and definitely and shot back at the moderators with their sometimes loaded questions.

Meanwhile, Santorum had this demeanor:

Santorum makes up for it with his vague repetitious rambling in circles; hoping that he'll sound intelligent.

Haven’t yet heard Santorum promising within two years that $2.50 gal/gas pie-in-the-sky stuff or “permanent moon-based colonies within eight years” and still winning the trifecta, and TN, AK, AL, and MS to coming within 1% of beating Romney in OH and 3% points of Romney’s home state in MI.

Embarrassment...Newt? LOL....never. Heck even the pundits understand what Newt’s doing and why his staying in is significant.....most of all to Santorum. Were it not for Newt Santorum would had hit the deck along time ago.

So it’s not over til it’s over and the fat lady has yet to sing!

On to convention!!!!!!!

Newt is such a great candidate. Wish the voters would figure this out. He is like Churchill, a gloriously flawed leader who is exactly right for the times.

I thought that’s how Gingrich looked in the pre-Florida debate and then got mauled by Romney.
