NY- Dem ACKERMAN WON’T SEEK RE-ELECTION EITHER! [UPDATED]

Wow. On the heels of his possible congressional opponent, Rory Lancman, bowing out of a run for Congress, Queens/Long Island Rep. Gary Ackerman is now bowing out too, according to a press release I just got from Ackerman’s office.

I am told the Queens Dems are meeting tomorrow to nominate congressional candidates, but two people I’ve spoken to close to the Queens Dems were unaware of Ackerman’s retirement.

I also have heard rumors that Rep. Joe Crowley would be interested in this seat, since this would be a favorable district for him, but I have no idea if that’s actually part of the equation here.

More to come, but here’s the release.

Congressman Ackerman announces he will not seek re-election

U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.) today announced that he will not seek re-election to the United States Congress.

On the eve of the Federal Circuit Court’s approval of Congressional district lines that were seen to be extraordinarily favorable to Ackerman, and with the primary-free backing of the Democratic Party virtually assured, Ackerman has informed his family, staff, friends and party leaders that he will not seek a 16th term of office.

Glad to see him retire. Even If only because of reapportionment.

This election is going result in so many new politicians. Quite a few Republicans and Democrats are not running this time out. I wonder if this is a record.

Ackerman, serving his 14th full term in Congress, represents portions of Queens and Long Island. But, in a redistricting map likely to become law, his district was essentially dismantled and his home was drawn into the same district as Rep. Steve Israel, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

I will need to read rollcall and thehill to compare this year to past reapportionment years, but here is a list so far. Plus there are the head to head contests in primary or in November which freepers can read on these sites.

Dems know that the GOP will control the House for the rest of the decade..and there is NO fun being in the minority in the House...thus lots of the old bull dems are packing it in..

Not that the only ones who aren't retiring are the members of the Black caucus...the new Dem caucus will be heavily dominated by CBC members..many who are cretin...and since the Dems won't eliminate seniority for ranking member slots...GOP should have fun next year...

His retirement is going to be a devastating blow to the carnation industry in DC.

I’d rather see him run out of town on a rail; but, voluntary retirement will have to do—what an a$$hole.
