Skip to comments.Newt moves to spoiler role to force deadlocked convention

Even in an open convention, Gingrich wouldn't have a prayer of getting the nomination. But that seems to matter less to him than blowing up Mitt Romney.
Gingrich no longer says he can capture the 1,144 delegates required to wrap up the Republican nomination. Instead, he now speaks frankly about a new plan: Keep Romney from getting to 1,144 by the end of the GOP primary season in June, and then start what Gingrich calls a "conversation" about who should be the Republican nominee. That conversation, the plan goes, would lead to a brokered GOP convention at which Gingrich would emerge as the eventual nominee.
"Our goal first is to keep Romney well below 1,000," Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said an hour before Gingrich addressed a small crowd of disappointed supporters gathered at the Wynfrey Hotel. "It doesn't have to be 1,000, or 1,050 -- it has to be below 1,100." If Gingrich succeeds, Hammond continued, "This will be the first time in our party in modern politics that we're going to go to the convention floor."

I think he’s staying in because he’s having the time of his life.
The worst that could happen at a brokered convention is we get another RINO shoved down our throats.
But we might not.
If his ONLY effect is to run Romney out of the race then I am all for it
I would rather see a Gingrich/Santorum team-up at the convention
I’m beginning to wonder if he is in Jeb Bush’s camp?
They will try to force a Mitch Daniels, Chris Christie, or Paul Ryan on us.
This has always been Newt’s biggest problem. He lets his enormous ego overshadow his intellect and competence.
I would love to see a brokered convention. I’m not thrilled with any of the remaining choices and we may well want to see what would come out of there that we could actually support. It certainly couldn’t be any worse then Romney.
So then, by extension, Newt and Rove would have to be co-conspirators??? (I don't think so!)
Perhaps Team Romney now regrets their carpet-bombing Bloody Thursday attack on Newt. Nah, those pricks are too arrogant to see that they brought this upon themselves.
Newt is a genuine Conservative hero for his efforts to de-rail Romney and protect the GOPe from its’ own stupidity.
Actually, I think a brokered candidate may be just fine, Romney, Newt & Santorum are not worth much anyway. I wish Ron Paul would contest the Democrat spot.
I think he knows by staying in he can come to an “agreement” with Rick. If Rick and Newt join forces at the convention would they not win by default? (assuming they have enough committed votes)
He is a historian and he wants to become a part of history, even if it can’t be via a presidential term. I am fine with this since I share the same goal... no Romney.
It’s only a spoiler to the establishment, because he’s spoiling their plans. They like to know what’s going to happen way ahead of time so they can manipulate things their way.
They have no idea what’s going to happen and their panicking. The voters aren’t going for their boy and they can’t believe they’re not laying down like normal.
Mr ego is. Mr ego, that is the way it has always been.
Mr ego is. Mr ego, that is the way it has always been.
Mr ego is. Mr ego, that is the way it has always been.
FORCE?? From you mouth to God’s ears. Any of those would be better than being stuck with either Romney or Santorum. It would give us a fighting chance.
I don’t know how a brokered convention works. When I voted this week, I also voted for delegates. Do the delegates get together and decide the nominee? Could Newt and Rick reach a deal where one will be prez and the other vice prez and directed their delagates to make it happen? Or am I way off base here?
“Newt strategy has pros and cons. He’s a smart guy. I pray he knows what he is doing.”
Yes, he does. Unlike Rick Moran, the author of the hitpiece.
I clicked over and read the whole thing, and I can’t remember ever seeing such a pile of completely groundless assertions published by American Thinker, ever. There is just nothing there to back up or even explain Moran’s statements. Nothing.
Levin predicted in some long monologues last night that there would be plenty of self-described experts coming out now, with no idea of the meaning of what is going on politically, with all kinds of stupid and off-the-mark “analysis”.
Moran just proved Levin right.
BINGO! He was rambling on about his “southern strategy”. Gee Newty, how’d that work out for ya?
For the good of the party and the good of the rest of us, he needs to go quietly into that good night but his ego won’t let him.
If you think about it, the purpose of the Republican convention is to assemble delegates from around the country to choose the presidential nominee, draft a platform, etc.
Why is it bad if we don’t get a nominee from the first dozen or so states which have voted so far? You figure that if Romney, or anyone else, had it “locked up” right now, it would be because he was the last man standing, not because he had enough delegates nailed down by now. It would have been because everyone else had dropped out.
Why are people afraid of a convention in which the identity of the nominee is not known before the vote?
Why would it be good if Romney, or another, was the last man standing, and the remaining states voting would simply be expected to ratify the decisions made in the early states voting?
Are people afraid of how the liberals would showcase a brokered convention, and decisions made there? The talking heads on MSNBC are going to be critical no matter what happens at the GOP convention.
>> Figless Newton’s wife Calista won’t let him drop out.
That’s a lowlife comment (in addition to being unfounded and false).
But what else could we expect from a RuPaul buttboy like yourself.
you just made me lose my temper .
What the establishment, and FOX, Coulter, Drudge Romney did to Newt that week was the most disgusting, vile acts our side has ever done in recent history.
Even now FOX is trying to take Newt of our the race for their boy to win.
The GOP/RNC blew it, for far too long these elitist north east, beltway types have been giving us McCain etc and then thinking because they put the likes of Sarah on the VP ticket we’ll get in line, hell even this week Romney said we down in the south , the base will unite after the nomination.
WELL SCREW YOU ESTABLISHMENT AND FOX.
I hope this goes all the way and Sarah has a deal with Col Allen West to come in and run.
Establishment backs that then the base will come out and work but if the establishment and their talking heads who care nothing about conservative social issues and hardly anything about fiscal issues then you can bet we’re staying at home, doing no work, no get out the vote, no money , no donations etc.
You are a sad broken record ... in more ways than one. That is the way it has always been.
Newt's staying in because he's a candidate for Pres. and he knows what is at risk if Romney gets the Primary...we loose. Additionally he's taking the heat for Santorum. You take out Newt and all the machinery will then come down on Santorum. They both need to stay in and this does need to go to convention....
But I wouldn't be surprised to see Palin rise from the ashes.
I don’t like either Mittens or Santorum. If Newt forces this to the convention, it’s fine by me. Maybe this time the Republishmentarians will go back to the Democrats and stay there.
When I look at how the media talks about the South and Southerners, how they treat our voting laws differently than their own, I wonder if they even *want* to be in a union with us (except to have access to our refineries and oil and gas reserves). I’m looking for the day when some smarmy POTUS like 0bama tells Texas, “Get lost,” and we do.
Works for me.
The teaser lines were pretty obvious wed..."Former Speaker shut out in South" vs. "Mitt Romney continues march" or "Mitt Romney collects more delegates".
There ya go.
Its about time we had a good old fashioned brawl at the GOP convention. Time to shake it up a little and clear the air.
I’m sick of voting for somebody I don’t want every 4 years.
” As it is, the GOPe is going to shove another RINO down our throats. The worst that could happen at a brokered convention is we get another RINO shoved down our throats. But we might not.”
“I would love to see a brokered convention. Im not thrilled with any of the remaining choices and we may well want to see what would come out of there that we could actually support. It certainly couldnt be any worse then Romney.”

Great points, all!
I have reservations about Santorum’s ability to beat Romney in a straight up match up so I fully endorse any effort to keep Rombama from the nomination.
FOX can hardly mention Newt after their attacks and they are so desperate he steps out and leaves Romney alone.
FOX and the establishment have shown themselves up for what they are and the day it was announced to me FOX hired a Soros media matters stooge, homosexual activist, who has denounced America and Capitalism then that is the day I stopped watching their afternoon and evening slots.
Oh her name who they hired is Sally Kohn or Khon.
She was brought into the picture by the airhead bimbo Megyn Kelly and now it seems Kelly got her a job at FOX.
The sooner FOX sorts out their afternoon line up the better and takes Kelly , Shep Smith, Brit Hume, the phony conservative Hannity off the better
Take it back to a Santorum thread Dude.

Well put !
I agree. And as I have attempted to explain on FR, the term brokered convention really has not been accurate in a very, very long time (as in, maybe over 150 years). What would happen is that the delegates will vote until one candidate has a majority. I cant speak for the many thousands of delegates, but the 3 we get to elect from our district group during the Texas convention are always reliable, with a long history of local party volunteer work, well known locally, experienced, highly conservative and knowledgeablebasically much like the average Freeper, but a bit older than average because they are usually retired. Under the Texas rules, during the first vote they are bound to vote for the nominee based on the primary voting results, but on every other vote, the 3 delegates will be free to vote for any candidate.
The point is that many of the voting delegates will not select a moderate. For example, Norm Mason, a local political citizen volunteer, is a typical delegate we select from our district. He recently wrote this book: The Political Imperative: An Assignment from God, http://www.amazon.com/Political-Imperative-Assignment-God/dp/0978679695
I’m not from the south (sadly the armpit that is Illinois) but it gets me hopping mad the way the media believes its just a bunch of gun-toting, bible-thumping evangelical (all excellent things IMO)doofuses that marry their sisters and can’t spell. They insult half of the country on a regular basis.
I have always said that IF this great nation is to be saved it’s going to be the south that saves it. Period. The west is a bunch of liberal granola eaters. The east is a bunch of elitist, clueless snobs. Most of the North is so infested with Unions it’s currently hopeless. The south is the only sanity left in this country.
I see this scenario in a brokered convention. Romney is exposed for being the weak candidate he is. Despite massive advantages in money, he can barely win states like MI and OH. Therefore, the party dumps him because they know in the General election he’d be toast.
But there will be a ton of animosity towards Rick/Newt from a sizable percentage of delegates. This opens the door for another candidate. Who does the White House seem to fear the most? That seems to be Sarah Palin imo. Can she unite value conservatives and fiscal conservatives? Yah, she can.
I don’t buy the line about her negatives being too high. BHO is obsessed with her. CW on her is wrong. She is a charismatic candidate that would pump out voter turnout on the right even more than current crop. And many woman who voted for Obama in 2008 will have to ask themselves, do they want to make history again, and vote for the first woman president? I think many will and the democrats will lose their traditional edge with women voters. Then you will see a landslide of epic proportions. And that is the way it SHOULD be, with an incumbent this terrible.
The media (and that includes Fox) doesn’t like anyone who doesn’t live in a “city”! We’re all a bunch of hicks. Well I am proud to be a hick! I am sick of being insulted by members of the media. The main reason I like Newt is because of his handling of the media! Go get the bas*aR*S Newt!!
How about Newt and Sarah?
I agree that Ron Paul should run on the Democrat ticket. He is worthless POS liberal anyway. He belongs over there.
No, it won't. It happened between Reagan and Ford in 1976. That isn't exactly ancient history. It was my first presidential election.
Oh one more reason for nominating Sarah. She is already a known figure. She won’t need to spend millions on name recognition. She also has the experience from 2008. She will come out of the gate campaigning hard on day one. I don’t think any other dark horse candidate would be able to start so fast and so strong.
“the former Massachusetts governor and his allies have invested nearly $5 million on the next big prize in the state-by-state race for the Republican nomination: Illinois, which will hold its primary on Tuesday. Most of the spending will go toward ads that attack Rick Santorum, now Romney's chief rival.”
Thank you! I’ll keep contributing so long as you stay in. Even if you go to convention.
4 years later we got Reagan after suffering endlessly with malaise of Jimma Carter. Ugh. I remember it well.
Also I'm sick of getting stuck with the choices of New Hampshire, Iowa, etc. If we have say 2 or 3 super Tuesdays throughout our primary and make them CLOSED primaries, then we'll have a good system. More people to start with, not the chosen few and RINOs like Romney.
My 2 cents says this is a Tea Party quiet dislike of Romney and the elite GOP can't stand that we don't want this guy.
If Sarah Palin gets close to the nomination, many here will have diarrhea, from both ends.
“It happened between Reagan and Ford in 1976. That isn’t exactly ancient history. It was my first presidential election.”
The average voter is probably around 45-50 years old. A 50 year old man would have first been able to vote in the 1980 election. It might not be ancient history, but most of us were too young to remember that race.
