Rick rocks the South! Ten things that didn’t happen in Alabama, Mississippi
SFGate: Politics Blog ^ | 3/13/12 | Richard Dunham, Hearst Washington Bureau

Did you change channels when you saw that the early exit polls gave Mitt Romney a semi-comfortable win in Mississippi Tuesday night?

If so, you missed a little news. Here are ten things that didn’t happen on Southern Tuesday in Alabama and Mississippi:

1. Mitt Romney didn’t wrap up the nomination.

...2. Rick Santorum didn’t pull out of the race.

...3. Newt Gingrich didn’t sweep the South, as he’d promised.

...4. The exit polls didn’t get it right.

...5. Mitt Romney didn’t order grits for breakfast.

...6. Mitt Romney didn’t win the grits-eater vote.

...7. Romney didn’t really do well among evangelicals.

...8. Newt Gingrich didn’t pick Rick Perry as his running mate.

...9. Alabama didn’t know how to count votes.

...10. Ron Paul still didn’t win a state.

Forgiving, does not mean you are obligated to vote for the man. Dang!

Even here I see posters who still focus on Gingrich’s adulteries.

The fact of the matter is that southern Conservative women voters (outside of FR) have looked at Newt's three marriages and decided that he's no better than Bill Clinton. Other voters have looked at his record from 1998 to mid-2011 and decided that he's no better than Mitt Romney.

Hey! There’s two two sweet, cute girls from Oklahoma in the background singing for Big Ricky! Cool! ;-)

"MONEY BOMB" online for Santorum urgently is needed.

I know such words will set off alarms and trawling software, but contributions tot he campaign need to be ramped up ASAP. This is Defcon 2, I mean Bishop Romney with his $$$ and nasty attitude, is going to throw everything but the kitchen sink now at Rick.

I never said you had to vote for Newt because he’s forgiven. My only point was that some posters still seem to hold his adulteries against him. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone, eh? Admitting mistakes is a big deal for me. It shows character. It’s better to have not made those mistakes in the first place, but if one has, it’s certainly the next best thing to admit them and try not to repeat them. Too many people nowadays refuse to ever accept blame for pretty much anything.

You might like this with regard to someone having transgressions in their past:

“Jacob was a cheater, Peter had a temper, David had an affair, Noah got drunk, Jonah ran from God, Paul was a murderer, Gideon was insecure, Miriam was a gossip, Martha was a worrier, Thomas was a doubter, Sara was impatient, Elijah was moody, Moses stuttered, Abraham was old,… and Lazarus was dead. God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the CALLED!”

I hear you.

That Drudge-Romney thing is so hot and heavy, you need a frikkin CROWBAR to separate the two.

Newt certainly has his problems, but I also remember when he did great things for this country. I admire him for admitting his mistakes. Romney, for example, absolutely refuses to back away from Romneycare. Oh, he's a federalist, so he would NEVER support the individual mandate on a nationwide basis (yeah, right). When it comes down to it, none of the candidates are what I'd like, but Newt came across as our best chance of changing things up. I'll vote for Rick Santorum, but I consider his support for Snarlin’ Arlen and numerous compassionate conservative votes to be problematic. He's no great gift to conservatism. I think evangelicals like Rick's faith, so they gloss over his other faults, which are serious but not nearly as bad as Romney's.

AmericanInTokyo: "That Drudge-Romney thing is so hot and heavy, you need a frikkin CROWBAR to separate the two." I can't stand Drudge anymore, and I was a regular. He helped slaughter Newt, and he's doing everything he can to destroy Santorum, too. Don't ask me why Mark Levin is giving Drudge a pass, because Drudge is not simply reporting the news. He's doing the exact same thing as the networks, selectively reporting the news to push his personal agenda. I should have been clued in sooner when he pretty much ignored the battle over DADT. Now I know why, and it makes even more sense that he's a Romneybot.

.... or draft a George Allen type ....

A 'George Allen type' is what? .... personally a really nice guy, southern, not all that exciting, not-so-fiscally-conservative, lost to Webb when he didn't effectively fight back on the 'macaca' smear ..... the type of candidate that I think will have a hard time beating Timmy Kaine and the type of candidate that would be eaten for lunch along with a side of arugula and a beer by O.

BTW, I don’t want conservative news sites to filter the truth either. I’m a conservative. Report the facts and let me reach my own conclusions, right?

I’ve lived in the South and can answer your question, at the risk of being flamed. This is the Bible belt, where a man can be forgiven for cheating on his wife, but never trusted to be alone with your own wife. According to the exit polls I saw, Santorum beat Newt among Evangelicals and the TEA Party, especially in Alabama.

That reminds me of something a pastor told me many years ago during a time I was in Oklahoma. He said (and I am paraphrasing since it was almost a decade ago) that someone in the congregation can stand up during altar call, and go up and confess of how he used to use heroin/cocaine/meth. How he was a major alcoholic. Used to be a compulsive gambler and in the process lost his family and house. Or used to steal and rob. Or any number of things. The congregation will embrace him and use him as an example of the power of redemption. But dare he say he used to be an adulterer, or a woman say she used to be a prostitute. Basically, any sin seems acceptable apart from sexual sin, which will elicit a lot of 'looks' as if the person is anathema. Interestingly in the Bible Christ said something about throwing the first stone when a certain lady of certain 'repute' was about to be put to death. Also, I remember someone else saying at the church that, at many times (but obviously not all, or even most) that some of the people most vigorously shaking their fingers and tsk-tsking are also embroiled in the same sins.

Even worse have the person say they are//were addicted to pornography.... Talk about being shunned. You can do heroine or coke or rob cheat and steal... but admit you were addicted to porn and you might as well have thrown a dead cat on the pulpit.

Yes, that too. I had actually forgotten to include it. Even more than adultery that will be the one most people will tsk-tsk, and it will also be the one that most are also guilty of.

It goes back to the line, “Trust, but verify.” Would you trust that heroin addict to hold onto some drugs for you? Forgiving someone is quite different from trusting them after they have shown a weakness.

Technically, Rick was born in VA and Newt in Harrisburg, PA, but I don’t think people know that.

The good: Hey, at least WrongMe didn't win!

The bad: I fear Santorum momentum only leads to a Romney or Santorum nomination, which in turn only leads to a Romney victory, a Romney loss, or a Santorum loss, all three of which scenarios suck eggs.

The ugly: Could Santorum be doing this specifically to help Romney beat out Gingrich, and has secretly been promised the VP slot?

The hope: Maybe continued weakness on Romney's part leads to a brokered convention, and maybe someone gets drafted that isn't even in race at the moment, an acceptable conservative, possibly even Palin.
