I am sure too.

No doubt they would see it as making a virtue of necessity.

Anyway an admirer of the general, an amazing man, a natural aristocrat, too bad he was born out of the wrong class. Then his part in the dirty war seems to have left him out of favor with the later Southern patriots. I don’t even think Foote spoke much of him, which is a shame since Foote wrote the only book I could actually enjoy about the war.

Exerts:

"The left is always seeking a new rationalization to justify junking the system.... In this case it's racism..... Sometimes it's misogyny. But it can be virtually anything. ......The incident with Rush Limbaugh demonstrates that the gravamen of the alleged injustice need not be serious or genuine to serve the purpose.

The left will also try to change the venue and its strivings to junk the system.... That is why it seeks to 'overrule the state at the federal level'... and 'the federal government in the United Nations'.

Can you imagine Harvard affording equal scope to a professor who argues that blacks should be control because they are violent and inferior? ....Why is one perspective inherently better or worse than the other? ......If Harvard lives in a world where subjectivism rules,..... why is a black man's 'critical race theory' valid... and a white racist's supremacy theory. reprehensible?

Once one trades intellectual rigor for political correctness and subjectivism, there is no right or wrong,... in fact there is no true or false.

This is precisely the place that The Frankfurt School intended for our entire educational system to go and it has succeeded brilliantly in taking it there.

Once this dismal philosophical nihilism becomes the rule, 'the Constitution means nothing', 'reason means nothing',.... and the path is made straight for intellectual, moral, and political disintegration and ultimately totalitarianism.

Nathan I realize your post here was written a couple weeks ago but is very interestig in light of the Zimmerman case so many are following. I've only begun reading this thread ...but found it so informative I'm bumping it up again for others perhaps to take note.

Thank you so much for such a great post.

Thank you for the kind words,CW.

Yesterday I published the following post which was an attempt to apply this understanding to the developments in the Zimmerman-Martin affair. I am not especially happy with the post, it seems inarticulate and leaves an ambiguous impression in some places where I have now inserted brackets.

Nevertheless, I think it is useful as a description of how the nihilism and cynicism of the left, the afterbirth of the Frankfurt School if you will, renders honest discourse irrelevant. I am trying to say that the Zimmerman-Martin affair is a good example of what we are talking about and we conservatives ought to recognize the landmines and hidden traps in the affair.

The cynicism of the leaders of The Left is obvious. These men are not unintelligent, they are duplicitous. The frightening feature is the eager susceptibility of their followers to their transparent demagoguery.

In the post I recommend a concerted counterattack but I might be dead wrong and the passive posture of the establishment Republicans might just be the more prudent course. Whatever is done in response, we should recognize that we are not dealing in logic with a demographic that can be reasoned with. We are confronted by a hurricane of mindless emotion.

In fairness to the African-American "community" we ought to acknowledge that we are asking a great deal of human nature. Implicit in the idea of racial profiling is the statistical evidence that young black males commit an overwhelming and disproportionate share of violent crime and crimes against property. The identification of that race with social disintegration does not stop there but extends to the disintegration of neighborhoods, the family, economic achievement, to virtually every human activity across-the-board.

In order to accept racial profiling, African-Americans would have to concede the reality of the statistics and human nature defends itself against such a searing indictment by denying reality. It is an emotional reaction to an objective reality. The more one is confronted with such an ego shattering reality, the more incendiary is the emotional reaction to compensate. It is easier to wallow in victimology than confront a humiliating reality. So we have the endless cycle which gives us Detroit on the scale considered by political scientists and Zimmerman-Martin affair in a smaller, human dimension.

The best analogy is to the Arab Street. If democracy cannot survive in the Arab world because the Arab Street disdains the Enlightenment and wallows in superstition, what is the fate of democracy in Detroit?

Here is yesterday's post:

Latino organizations dismiss George Zimmerman, question his ethnicity

Do you remember all those oh-so-reasonable pleas to withhold judgment on this affair until we were in full possession of the facts? Do you recall Republicans and conservatives pleading for the world not to leap to judgment but to wait for facts?

Nothing could have been more ineffectual. Pleas to the world not to leap to judgment succeeded only in granting the race baiters a head start.

Well, the facts are coming out now and they are proving to be utterly irrelevant. That is because the demagogues who exploited this affair as race baiters knew perfectly well that their target audience was indifferent to the facts on the ground and was interested only in personalities, but personalities only in terms of their racial identity.

It does not matter if Zimmerman is Hispanic [he has been identified as white] or if there is a cut on the back of his head. It simply does not matter!

The whole process of projecting guilt was done exclusively by identifying the group identity of the participants. The whole opposition to racial profiling is a group identity movement. This has nothing to do with an Anglo-Saxon application of facts to law; it has only to do with tribal identity.[That is, victim: African-American; perpetrator: white; situation: racial profiling; conclusion: racism; crime: murder]

These people are utterly indifferent to facts, the entire matter is concluded once racial identity is established. As the facts come out and Zimmerman is vindicated at every turn, there will be no change of attitude in the African-American community, the matter will simply trail off and die a whimpering death except to be revivified from time to time, especially before elections, as part of ghetto lore. It will live on into eternity as myth.

Therefore, it is hopeless to attempt to win over the African-American community which is utterly resistant to reason on this issue. The Republican angle should be to exploit the white blowback and to divide the Hispanic community from the Democrat party which is committing this shameless demagoguery.

The fact that the leaders of the Hispanic groups are coming out against Zimmerman indicates that these leaders are in the business of identity politics and remain tethered to the Democrat party. Moreover, if they debunk this sham they undermine their own posturing. This is a money game for the leaders and they cannot afford to shut the game down.

Whites, conservatives, Republicans, civic minded citizens, lovers of justice, all can exhort these groups to consider the facts and they will accomplish nothing and lose the political argument. We must go on the attack and make the Democrats pay with white independent voters and some Hispanics. It is a shame that this is being left for the most part to talk radio to do. Newt Gingrich certainly has struck the right tone but the chorus should be unanimous and stentorian, driven by real moral outrage.
