Solid in Kansas, Santorum Seeks to Build Margin

By TRIP GABRIEL March 9, 2012

WICHITA, Kan. — “We chased all the candidates out of Kansas!” Rick Santorum boomed as he took the podium one day before Saturday’s caucuses in the state, which his two leading rivals are not seriously pursuing.

Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have largely bypassed Kansas and its 40 delegates to the Republican convention, instead focusing on the bigger prizes of Alabama and Mississippi, whose primaries are on Tuesday. But that did not stop Mr. Santorum from laying into both rivals with biting words as he sought to motivate supporters to give him a big victory here to carry into the Deep South, which new polls on Friday showed to be fluid.

Skipping entirely the social issues with which he has become identified, Mr. Santorum declared himself the one candidate whose conservative record on health care and energy would present a sharp contrast with President Obama.

He accused Mr. Romney of falsifying his past support for a national health insurance mandate similar to the one in Massachusetts.

“There’s only one thing worse than having bad policy, which he does have, and that’s not telling the truth to the American public,” Mr. Santorum said.

Mr. Romney has said he never supported a national requirement to buy health insurance.

Aiming at Mr. Gingrich, who has made lowering gas prices a particular focus of his campaign lately, Mr. Santorum accused him of hypocrisy for once embracing a cap-and-trade energy policy.

“I don’t sit on a couch with any other woman; I sit on a couch with my wife,” Mr. Santorum said, a dig at Mr. Gingrich for making an anti-global-warming advertisement with Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader, and for marrying three times.

IMO, Rick was not refering to Newt’s past personal life, but rather it was the NYT writer who wanted to get that dig in.

He's either stupid or coarse, else the words wouldn't have come out - can't have it both ways sweetie.

The Santorums are such good people, and sure do have a very special personal touch. They’re like family.

From everything I’ve seen, Karen seems so cool - glad you got to meet her. Thanks for posting.

Oh, that’s who she is! I was very sorry when the Congressman lost his seat in the last election. He seems like a great guy. I followed his Tweets from the House floor - that’s how I know about him.

Don’t be silly.

I am not your enemy and I am CERTAINLY not a NYT pal, even if I detest Santorum.

Yes, I detest Santorum. But do you love Gingrich?

Life happens and it is what it is —you are Lauren BaRecall of Free Republic and I would go down for you.

We need to know that first.

I neither detest Gingrich, nor do I love him. I do not TRUST him. Above all, Gingrich has said, despite scientific knowledge and the doctrine of his church, that human life begins after “successful implantation.” This leaves the door open to fetal stem cell experimentation, the murder of “snowflake” babies, and only God knows what else.

It is at the moment of conception that the Creator endows each human being with the unalienable right to life, and as long as there is one candidate who supports this self-evident truth (Santorum), I am bound to support him in truth.

This is the moment of truth for our country, the point at which we must make a decision as to the national character. Will we choose the truth of Natural Law and the vision of the Founders, or choose the culture of death, however indirectly? Our fortunes are inextricably bound with the state of our morality as a people. That’s Natural Law. Natural Law is the truth. It is independent of personal opinion. Natural Law is what made possible the success of a ragged group of colonists against the world’s greatest army. Natural Law has been the instrument by which America has survived, prospered, and been a force for good in the world.

I would rather throw my lot and my honor with a ragged candidacy who supports the truth as to when life begins, than support a statesman who relies on his inaccurate personal opinion.

You tell me if you want to deal with now, or spend time unraveling the past. Your choice.

I see Gingrich different. I know we will never come to a meeting of the minds on candidates, but can’t we agree we are partners in crime?

We are Americans and we are FReepers. There is no wedge issue there.

I don’t understand your challenge. I said I am not Catholic and I look to those with more knowledge here.

I am moved by the link I provided. If I must go it alone as a non-label...I will.

I don’t understand it and I would like to. I KNOW it is the right fight and I am going to fight. I just would like to know if I am being conned. Thank You.
