Romney campaign says losing nomination would take 'act of God'

BOSTON -- Mitt Romney's campaign gathered the national press corps in their campaign war room this morning to deliver a simple message: It would take an "act of God" for any candidate not named Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination.

The Boston-based campaign projected confidence in Romney's ability to win the nomination given the emerging delegate math in the campaign following last night's Super Tuesday contests.

"We will get to 1,144 whether it's on someone else’s timeline, or on our timeline," said one top Romney aide. "We will get to 1,144 and be the Republican nominee."

The background briefing with several members of the campaign's senior staff was emblematic of Romney's campaign: no grand flourishes, just business, math and message, with aides asserting the calendar was ill-suited to any candidate looking to eat into Romney's delegate lead.

Looking ahead to a primary calendar where the only remaining true winner-take-all states appear to favor Romney -- Delaware, Utah, New Jersey and the District of Columbia (where Rick Santorum is not on the ballot) -- the advisers tried to slowly close the door on Santorum and Newt Gingrich, who they said had little to no opportunity left to close the delegate gap.

Other delegate-heavy states like California and Texas (the latter thought to be less friendly to Romney) are winner-take-all by congressional district, which all but guarantees their large delegate hauls being split between candidates, rather than award a large haul to a single GOP hopeful. One Romney aide said one would have to "bend the laws of reality," to see Gingrich or Santorum making a significant dent in Romney's lead...

-snip-

Asked directly when they would begin working behind the scenes to convince the Gingrich and Santorum campaigns to see the math their way, one Romney adviser responded bluntly "now."

I do not concern myself if Myth gets his 1,144. No one should get out of your way Mittens or the GOP-e because you clowns say so. As far as I'm concerned, this doesn't get settled until the August 30th Convention.

"It would take an "act of God" for any candidate not named Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination."

Not a very good idea to take on HE.

Fortunately, America is “One nation, under God”, and “God shed His grace on thee”, and in many other ways, America seems special in God’s plan. I believe our country deserves better than Romney or Obama, and I will continue to pray that God will bless the Untied States with the best possible leader in these dangerous times.

And I believe with all my heart that is exactly what will happen!...........an act of God!

What strange and brazen bravado this Romney has.

Now that’s inspiring rhetoric if I ever heard it. ‘Me or the highway!’

Mitt Romney, alienating conservatives since he started his presidential jihad.

That's right, both Newt and Santorum need to stay in and fight. Send the GOPE a message if nothing else. They represent the Conservative voice, which the GOPE needs to learn more respect for.

They are right about the fact that it will take an act of God for anybody but Romney to win though, as hard as it is for me to say it. The demographics and statistics all point in one direction.

Seems Mr. Romney is like Obama in many ways including the fact he won’t recognize the fact that most folks DON’T WANT HIM AS PRESIDENT.

There’s an elite circle of self serving that are fighting to place Mr. Romney in a position to defend their personal interests is how I see it.

We the people don’t seem to matter to those of that elite circle of the self serving. We should. It’s our country, and we had better impress upon their skulls that point.

Such arrogance. I believe I read something in the Bible that says, “thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God.” Ooh, Romney what a thing to say!

Aw, they really don’t think He (if He exists at all) is interested in these matters and what they personally say about Him.

Remember this quote and the date these people made this dare.

Remember the Titanic, the ship “even God could not sink.”

It’s obvious, there are an awful lot of conservatives who are voting for Romney. But our best hope now, is for both Newt and Rick, to take enough delegates from the states left to vote, to trigger a brokered convention.
