Rick Santorum indicated that Newt Gingrich should drop out of the presidential race, arguing -- as Gingrich did during his surge -- that splitting the "anti-Romney" vote helped Mitt Romney win the Michigan primary and Washington caucuses and contributes to his overall success so far.
"It's always harder when you've got to conservative running in the race as we have seen in Washington and we've seen in other states," Santorum said on Fox News Sunday. "We have the anti-Romney vote, if you will. Both Gingrich and I are slugging away."
Santorum stopped short of calling for Gingrich to exit the race, but he noted that their combined support would defeat Romney. "In Michigan, we would have won easily if those two votes had been combined," he told Chris Wallace.
He also made clear that he believes Gingrich will have to drop out, eventually. "And, you know, eventually hopefully the race will settle out and we'll go one on one," Santorum said. "And once that happens, we feel very comfortable we're going to win this thing."

And I lay responsibility for that clearly at the feet of Rick Santorum.
Saintorum can shove it. He will never get my vote.
Our country can’t afford another rookie in the White House...besides, Obama would eat him alive.
** President Newt Gingrich-”Our beloved republic deserves nothing less.”
It’s not a matter of whether he would beat Romney, if Newt drops out.
But it’s whether he could be Obama if he wins the nomination.
Sorry Rick but IMHO you are net yet ready for the Presidency. GO NEWT GO!
be Obama = beat..
:)
Arrogant little twit. I watched him on Fox News Sunday today and he is a very weak interview. Chris Wallace had him squirming and re-writing history for 15 minutes. It was ugly. Also Ricky may want to look at the poll. He is dropping like a rock everywhere now that people are starting to find out more about him. Newt on the other hand took his time this morning twisting Stephie and David Gregory into pretzels. No comparison.
Gingrich will:
Super Tuesday: Win Georgia/Tennessee/Oklahoma, do very well in Ohio
March 10: Do very well in Kansas
March 13: Win Mississippi/Alabama
This race is far from over and Newt has a huge opportunity with Santorum continuing to go off message, and backtrack.
Amen.
Santorum still has yet to win a primary.
I’d vote for Romney over Santorum and that’s about as low as one could go in my book.
Newt’s the only one who will “git er done””.
Why should Newt drop out? He is by far the better of the four candidates. I agree, there is a growing anti Santorum contingency, the more exposure he gets.
What do you by a bump since he only seems set to win a single state? Santorum will probably win more on Super Tuesday, he’s already has delegate tied in Michigan and Washington State.
Love your Positive Attitude. My hope is that you are downright Prophetic! :)
I'm not giving up on Newt. The Rep Elites are fighting us tooth & nail!!
Eric Cantor is endorsing Romney!! Says he's the ONLY one who knows how to create jobs & can beat Obama.
GINGICH/WEST can do better.
IF I had known it would be Gingrich/West for sure I would have voted for him in Michigan.
Willard needs to drop out in all severeness..I mean seriousness.
He could then be free to hunt vermit with with his new bud from Motor City or, maybe compete on Trump’s Apprentice.. as he is a great businessman.
Every time Santorum opens his mouth it becomes increasingly difficult for me to keep mine closed.
while this may have been true 2 weeks ago, it is no longer the case.
Santorum had his chance, and he blew it. Now it’s time for Santorum to get out of the way of the real challenger Newt.
All,
Newt did great on Washington Journal this am. He took calls and every caller(including a dem.) treated him with respect and admiration.
He even turned Candy Crowley’s “gotcha questions “ into great solutions for America on CNN.
The media always bring up the question “Should Santorum drop out? Should Newt drop out?” Once they answer, and say they are not going to say what the other should do but it would be easier if the other one drops out, they run with that and cause division. The media is playing us all one against the other.
Not a chance.......Newt is our only reason Romney is stuck on 30%.
Santorum can pound sand.
So what did they ask Newt about? Did they ask him about his ex-wives and how much alimony he’s paying? Did they ask him why he converted to Catholicism and how much of it he actually believes?
There’s no comparison of the hatchet job Wallace did on Santorum this morning. We’d better start speaking out about this now or it will be Newt next or whoever we try to elect without their permission.
Why can’t ROMNEY get the point that Conservatives don’t want him? Why doesn’t anyone ask why ROMNEY doesn’t get out? If the choice were between Santorum and Newt, who would better close the deal with the American people? Between Santorum and Newt, who is best to turn the tables on the media and the republican establishment?
Santorum is part of that establishment that got us into this mess; there is no question about it. Santorum does not have the depth or strength of knowledge to turn the tables on his own party much less the media. Newt is the only choice. He has turned the medias stupid and bias questions inside out on numerous occasions. His interview with Gregory on Meet the Press this morning is the evidence anyone would need to make the right choice. Quite frankly, if I had a child who was living on borrowed time like Bella, I would not even consider a job that would require the time that the presidency requires. Now, where are his values?
Newt is the only choice we have now. I also think he will have an incredible cabinet and he will choose the right VP to run with him. West would be my choice if Sarah does not want the job. Sarah would also make one hell of a Secretary of Energy.
Note to Rick: Please go back and clean up your political entrails off the Fox studio floor.
The power of media bias is being shown. They simply refuse to give RS any kind of coverage. In all respects the votes in Michigan and Washington State, check the delegates, were ties. The MSM acts as if Romney won them handily. Same with Iowa where Rick even won the vote and was treated as if he lost.
The worst part is the GOP does the same thing.
The fix was in from the start.
..
I still don’t see how this helps Newt though, he’ll come in 3rd or 4th almost in every state on Tuesday.
Newt can say the same thing about Rick.
Which is that if Rick drops out Newt can beat Mitt.
Who would you like to see debate 0Bama, Newt or Rick?
He's a lightweight and the curve ball backs him out of the batters box every time. Sometimes he falls over backwards just as the ball is crossing the plate for a strike.
He's not a big league hitter and can't deal with big league pitching...even in what should be batters practice against his own bullpen.
Preferring Romney over Santorum is insane.
Romney does not even belong in Republican politics.
I saw the same interview. The GOP needs to reflect on how angry we became when George Bush allowed himself to become the punching bag of the leftist establishment media. Then reflect on who is the tougher character, Bush or Santorum.
Santorum was backing off of his comments, apologizing, and taking a defensive as opposed to an offensive position. That’s something you don’t see Newt doing.
I don’t see what the Republican electorate sees in Satorum. He simply can’t stand toe-to-toe with a guy like Obama. It’s very evident. Romney would do better. Newt would make us proud.
I usually catch almost every interview Santorum gives, but mised Fox News Sunday today....only caught a bit when they replayed a little....
Have no idea if Mike tried to eviscerate him, but then again, Mike tries to eviscerate anyone who is decent and conservative.
Wallace did say, in the 2nd interview later, that Santorum was dealing with a heavy cold.
It takes a strong constitution, physically, to be a candidate & be ready to respond day in, day out to questions....give speeches....travel in planes, trains and automobiles across the country with very little sleep and reporters mics stuck in your face so they can try to trip up your words.
You know, like what some of you do here...except without the mics.
And Gingrich would win if Santorum drops out...so they’re even. I am depressed. Because it appears more and more that the GOP-e is going to win this round. I just don’t see how the guy that lost to McCain is going to win in November. If what the independents are looking for is a wishy washy go along to get along, then maybe. As for me, if Newt goes through the Pa. primares, he’s got my vote. At that point, I quit the Republican party.
I Newt drops out he will not endorse and a great many of his supporters will sit out until the general. Santo will be on his own. Good luck with that, Rick.
He’s like Romney, ‘this is mine’ so drop out so I can have it.
Grow up, slick rick!
They need to flip a coin to see who drops out so Mitt can’t win.
It’s going to be a disaster if neither Gingrich or Santorum drops out after Super Tuesday......there is no way back, it will be Romney if that’s the case, we’re standing at the abyss.
Really, becoming religious and Catholic is a negative to you?
Absolutely not, I'm as religious as they come. Just making a point about how Chris Wallace and rest of msm treat the subject as some sort of flaw. Which, I might say, I'm pretty damn sick of it.
They don’t have the same record - no coin flip.
If Newt decides to do it, and springs it soon and West goes for it would it be a game changer is the question.
Col. West takes No-one's BS, to see him Beootch Slapping the lame streams on the Stump wouldn't even be fair.
Dr. Gingrich is an eloquent man and a deep thinker, I think asking him those questions will be like lobbing a slow pitch to Babe Ruth.
Santorum lost me with those robo-calls during the last primary.
My former impression was that he was one of the very rare breed that walked the morality walk as much as he talked the morality talk, and was worth supporting for that alone.
The robo-calls showed him to be just another damn pol. If I have to support “just another damn pol”, I am going to choose the most effective one that is reliably Conservative. Right now that’s Newt, but I’m still hoping that somehow...
*see tagline*
If it wasn't for the Teddy Kennedy dynasty he probably would not be. He had a short chance to switch to donk but that is gone now with the rise of Joe Kennedy III and Joe Kennedy II (RI) making noises about a comeback run. I have not heard where...
.
Santorum wouldn’t have won Washington caucuses even if he had every Gingrich vote.
How dare he call for Newt to drop out. Everyone should have an opportunity to complete the process. After all, Newt does have some momentum. LOL
As my tagline says, Santorum is my guy, but what looks bad is that neither side of the conservative voters, Newt or Santorum, really wishes to give up his vote. The general public doesn’t like either one. No one cares about Romney either way except conservatives. Indies, apols, and Republicans are fine with Mitt.
Santorum has slightly more of a chance and would truly beat Romney if gingrich had dropped out today. Not sure if santorum dropped out today if newt could best romney.
So we get romney. Im just saying. that is what it looks like.
A lot of good FR’s Newt-love did us.
All of the idiots that have no clue voted for Obama last time. These same idiots without any measure of quality are breaking for Romney. This is the true lunatic fringe.
