Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai called for calm Sunday after outrage over the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base sparked deadly protests and led to the shooting deaths of two U.S. military officers.
A gunman who shot them Saturday in the highly secured Afghan Ministry of Interior was a junior intelligence officer with ties to a Pakistani religious school, an Afghan counter-terrorism official said.
Last week, two American soldiers were gunned down at a base in eastern Afghanistan. That incident was also blamed on the Quran burnings.
Even as Karzai called for calm Sunday, there was an explosion and small arms fire at Combat Outpost Fortitude in northern Afghanistan, where about 400 people were protesting, according to Capt. David Yaryar, spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

My thought with the "intelligence officer" bit was that it generally means a more politically connected position - following regime's wishes/intents.

Military burns Bibles sent to troops in Afghanistan

A story hit the media today, stating that the U.S. Military made a choice to burn Bibles sent to soldiers on base in Afghanistan. The military has a policy that unsolicited religious materials are not allowed to be sent or distributed by military personnel. Central Command General Order No. 1 specifically forbids “proselytizing of any faith, religion or practice” and is to be strongly enforced in sectors which are predominantly Muslim, for fear such material distribution will be taken as an attempt on behalf of the U.S. to proselytize and convert the local people.

Yes these people hate our guts. They don’t want us occupying their country. They are a bunch of 7th century barbarians that are ruled by a cult called Islam. We need to get the Heck out of there and let them get back to their dancing boys and killing and raping each other with great abandonment. If they get sick of the Taliban they will get rid of them on their own.
Now we can’t even get 16 of our own people out of Eqypt including the kid of a cabinet member. It’s Carter redux. If we had a president with any guts he’d tell the Eqyptian military that a Blackhawk helicopter is going to land at the embassy at a certain time and pick up our folks and if anything untoward happens we are going to turn Eqypt into a glass skating rink. Thats what they understand. Strength and violence.

One of the things they do in Madrassas is to burn the Koran, in fact, because the stuff in there matters not, it only is a uniform. What matters to the arab is that the “YOU” and the “I” can be hidden behind that uniform and way to infiltrate people.
