LANCASTER, NY - Representative Kathy Hochul (D - 26th District) was booed at her own town hall meeting on Friday morning in Lancaster.
The packed crowd was critical of Hochul for supporting President Obama's plan to require religiously affiliated employers, such as hospitals and schools, to provide full contraception coverage to female employees.
The plan was later altered. It now calls for those workers to get free contraceptive coverage from health insurers, thus sparing religious based groups, morally opposed to paying for birth control, from having to do so.
Even though Hochul's town hall meeting was open to any topic, the large crowd focused on the contraception coverage issue.
When Hochul spoke in support of the President, the crowd booed. Many in the audience carried signs, including one that read: "Kathy why have you betrayed our Catholic institutions?" One woman in the crowd told Hochul: "This President has lied to us repeatedly when he proclaims support for conscience protection in his infamous speech at Notre Dame as well as in the executive order he signed following passage of the health care law. He is not worthy of your support in this matter." Another man shouted "It's an insult to the Catholics in this country to even listen to that gibberish. It is an absolute insult and Catholics deserve better. We were taking care of this country's sick long before the government got involved in it."
Pastor Leon Bienart of Our Lady of Pompeii Church also asked Hochul if the President or Congress consulted with Catholic bishops before they issued the policy. Hochul replied that it was a good question and she would try to get an answer. The Congresswoman also replied this way to the questions and criticism "We're not gonna agree on this one. I'm gonna tell you that I will stand for our religious freedoms. But I don't see a conflict here. Now that there's been an accommodation that says religious institutions do not have to provide these services. So we're just going to have to disagree on that."
The meeting was heavily publicized on Catholic radio and many Catholic organizations encouraged people to attend and discuss the contraception issue. It was also brought up specifically by Father Beinart during his Mass on February 5th when he criticized President Obama and Congresswoman Hochul.

Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God.
The media, large and small continue to frame this as a contraceptive issue.
Wow. Good for those brave people who stood up to her.
Good this is the way things led up to the 2010 elections.
My mind is made up. Don't bother me with your petty concerns, peons! Just send us your taxes and shut up!
The Catholic Church didn’t elect this woman. CINOs may have voted for her, but not Catholics.
2012 with Obama forcing contraceptives upon women, will be the year Americans turned against birth control and our nation under God will make all abortions illegal providing the right to life to millions and outlaw contraceptives giving freedom to millions of American women.
If they feel that they can get away with taking away our liberties, they are going to continue to do so. The next time will be a bigger bite than this one. They will try to mollify and pacify those who are irate by divide and conquer, and buying off the leaders. The complicit media will print out reams of propaganda that this is no big deal.
Just because someone says they are Catholic, doesn’t mean they are. Nancy Pelosi is not Catholic. She may say it, but she isn’t. You can’t be Catholic and pro-abortion. Period.
The rats just don’t care about the first amendment. It’s heartening to see that many Americans are pushing back.
Listen up, folks. This story and every other media story says that the plan was modified, an accommodation was made, etc. to make the insurers, not the employer, provide the contraceptions (code for abortion).
How many of you know that, in fact, the Monday after the much ballyhooed “accommodation” was hawked in the MSM, Traitor-in-Chief Sebelius quietly promulgated the original regs from August 2011.
Yes, they not only took out the “let the insurers pay” fake “accommodation” but they even took out the “one year extension to comply.”
Both of the “compromises” were frauds anyway, but I have yet to see anyone, not even conservatives, showing much awareness that the “accommodation” was simply dropped three days after it was rolled out.
Tell your friends, inform them. Obama is such a fraud, liar, fake. The “accommodation” was a head-fake but it is what has stuck in the media, then, behind the scenes, they quietly restored the more draconian version. It goes into effect in August 2012, not August 2013.
The correct story can be found on the USCCB web site.
Sorry, wrong link. This one has the update about the “accommodation” being quietly dropped:
I posted this in my blog and Face Book yesterday. I had to watch it a couple time, just to hear the boos over and over. It was great that none of us in the TEA Party around here were involved in the meeting. It warmed my heart.
She will be defeated this year. people in WNY are stuck on stupid and just adored he “infectious Irish smile” when we were warning everyone who she really is.
In part it is because the Pubbies are not much better. The Establishment Republicans have, for instance, caved on gay marriage. George H.W. Bush sent out his wife, his daughter-in-law and Ws daughters to pander to the upper crust who think they determines the morals of the country.
The GOAL is single-payer, remember? The easy solution is for Catholic employers to stop providing health insurance.
I heard no boos. I heard no comment about the Constitution. I thought I heard the meeting called an ‘uprising’ by the news reader.
That’s true. People got fed up and angry.
