(Reuters) - Evangelical Christian leaders took up a bully pulpit on Thursday to call for a "humane" overhaul of the U.S. immigration system in response to tough crackdowns on illegal immigrants enacted by Alabama and other states.

"Because I'm a Christian I believe in comprehensive, common-sense, humane immigration policy," the Rev. Gabriel Salguero, president of the New York-based National Latino Evangelical Coalition, told a conference of evangelical leaders in Birmingham.

"Hospitality is not at the margins of scripture. Jesus wasn't kidding around when he said, 'I was a stranger and you welcomed me,'" Salguero said at the G92 South Immigration Conference at Samford University.

God does not grant waivers just because the church thinks biblical passages such as they shall not steal, thy shall not lie, etc,etc can be overlooked if your reasons for doing so, is for a better life.Illegals regardless of the sob stories illegals are expected to follow the laws and not be told how it is ok to break them , churches prefer to make up their own laws as they go along.

Immigrants in the US have an immigration visa. All other foreigners here are VISITORS.

All visits come to an end. Even Jesus ended his visit in a town when they proved inhospitable and he went on down the road. He advised his Disciples to do so themselves under those circumstances.

The “humane” thing would be for our country to have a secure border and our legal visitors and citizens protected from illegal alien criminals.

They are referring to LATINO evangelicals...big difference - of course they want their families here, given the living hell that Mexico has become.

I was worried that the American Evangelicals were going soft...turning into another Huckabee, but (thankfully) not, at least in this article.

I wonder what Rev. Gabriel Salguero would say about a National Latino White Evangelical Coalition?

‘’..given the living hell Mexico has become’’. Mexico is in the condition it is because of the Mexican people and no one else. They’ve turned the land God gave them(the richest country in Latin America, by the way) into the shit-hole it is and now they’re breaking into our country and steadily turning it into a replica of the ‘’living hell’’ they’re running away from. Screw Mexicans and these idiot ‘’clergy’’ crying for them.

These are LIBERAL “evangelicals.”

How dare they paint themselves as grand spokesmen for more than a few.

I am an evangelical and I have NOTHING to do with this bleeding-heart spew.

But the SBC’s Richard Land and the rest of the SBC leadership are selling us out on this issue, too. Land, BTW, is a member of the CFR.

There’s one sure way for church members to make their position known: stop giving. They politicize the church? Fine, let them figure out how to pay for it.

The SBC leadership is actually very liberal politically - they think it will help them get their numbers up.

No money should be given to the SBC until it cleans house and renounces its support for amnesty and environmentalism, and stops soft pedaling what the Bible says about sodomites and their practices.

I am as well, and I believe his quotation of Jesus, is a misinterpretation, and it is a deliberate misinterpretation.

Yet the Catholic bashers here always tar Catholic citizens in general as liberals and Obama voters when its the LATINO Catholics who form a majority of those "Catholic" voters... big difference. Take away the latino Catholic votes and the remaining American Catholics OPPOSED Obama in 2008.

>> So Massachusetts Catholics are Latinos? <<

No, Massachusetts Catholics are liberal, just like Massachuttes Protestants.

I don't know why this concept is so hard for people to grasp:

Most Latino protestants lean liberal.
Most Latino Catholics lean liberal (and are not "socially conservative", judging by the oodles of latinos who promoted the Chicago Gay Pride parade last year.

Most white, church-going protestants nationally vote conservative.
Most white, church-going Catholics nationally vote conservative.

Most of the evangelical "leaders" in their church organizations are cozy with illegal aliens.
Most of the Catholic "leaders" in their church organizations are cozy with illegal aliens.

Most lay evangelicals OPPOSE illegal immigration.
Most lay Catholics OPPOSE illegal immigration.

Most Massachuttes protestants vote liberal.
Most Massachuttes Catholics vote liberal.

Most Kansas protestants vote conservative.
Most Kansas Catholics vote conservative.

Seeing a pattern yet?

Have you forgotten bjClinton? Now I know for a fact that the largest 'baptist' church in my neck of the woods were born and bred democrats first. Oh in the days of Clinton this church the most popular place to go to church were 99% 'white'.

My Protestant 'white' extended family and friends in the overwhelming majority are alllll born and bred democrats...

The Catholics I know of all ethnic backgrounds alllll church going routinely, are 'Reagan democrats' and born and bred democrats. They all but ONE loved old bjClinton with the same passion as my Protestant relatives and friends. And by the time Bush entered his second term this one single Catholic family so despised Bush they could not wait to work to get Obama elected.

I know people that are dirt poor but eek out an existence, others that never knew any other way than government handouts, lots of middle class and even a few millionaires.... and the overwhelming majority are born and bred democrats first and their religious teachings sure seem to affirm their political ideology. WWJD types who have no clue what Jesus actually said, to the 'Church' worshipers, that must be getting their political instructions right out of their mass.

I have lived the majority of my life in that so called 'conservative' democrat Ike Skelton's district. Regardless of what the national polls claim as to what members of various denominations claim it is NOT as cut and dried as you attempt to claim.

One more thing left out in all this polling data. It was reported that the overwhelming number of 40 and under college graduates, across the board supported and voted for Obama.

IOW, the headline *should have* been "Latino Evangelical leaders call for total amnesty."
