When I was a kid, signs such as garage sale signs and political signs placed along thouroughfares were against city ordinances.
During the political season I used to go along the major roads and collect huge bundles of free fire wood. Never knew anything about any of the candidates, but they sure helped get unseasoned hardwood started.

Where I am it is illegal to remove campaign signs within 30 days of an election, on public property, unless there is a public safety issue. A number of years ago a member of the city council was fined by the cops for removing a sign of an opponent posted at a busy intersection.
