Anyone else experience this? It's just on Free Republic only.
Can't help but wonder if this is being intentionally done by people that do not like this web site?
I never really experience these issues on any other web page. Well if it ever does something like this...., then it's usually the entire web. In other words it's my Internet Service Provider and not the web.
Figured I would double check and ask. Posting a reply is not easy at the moment. So I don't expect many replies.
Yep, have to refresh a few times to get rid of Error 503, Service Unavailable.
I get “Service Temporarily Unavailable” about 2 refreshes out of 3.
Same here...503’s and service temporarily unavailable.
Yup. Having a problem with one of the servers. Hoping that John gets it solved soon.
Free Republic Having Issues Today?
Naw....... why would you ask?
Need some more donations! Hurry up folks!
denial-of-service-attack alert.
Big time problems today.
Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Free Republic is secretly under cat control. When the cats are well fed, well petted, and generally pleased, Free Republic works well.
Upset the kittehs, and they will punish us all with 503 errors.
Just don’t tell anyone I said anything; the kittehs will take me in for LOL Cat re-education for revealing the truth.
Remember, you didn’t hear this from me!
Too Late, they know, run.
No, it’s just you...

Sunday is probably the best day to take down problem servers and get them fixed.
Not everyone realizes it, but FreeRepublic stores an ENORMOUS amount of data on its servers, going back years. I don’t know of any other forum that attempts anything like it. Most of them clean stuff out fairly often in order to speed things up cheaply, and then it’s lost for good. FR also accommodates a lot of visuals, and that takes up server space, too.
But it’s great to have all these things.
Except double postings?
Actually, most of the images on FR are hosted on other (non-FR) servers.
Karl Rove has modified his hurricane machine to deny access to Free Republic in order to shore up support for Mitt Romney.

LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!
Just had 3 in a row.
It’s happening on other sites too.
yep service unavailable constantly
must be big brother
tt’s because FR ran the picture of the rocket contrails. The Men-in-Black are terribly upset and have moved in their Beetle-Bomb (named after a 1950s Spike Jones record to throw everyone off track) internet bomb. It’ll all clear up eventually.
Sundays are getting to be notorious for 503’s.
But-but-but-—I didn’t reveal the *real* reason for the FRepathons (the FReeper cats increased their catnip and tuna demands again).
They can’t prove it was me!
Besides, you’ll cover for me, right? Right?
Shhhh! Don’t tell me you’re in cahoots with them!
:-)
So, it looks like all those FReepathons aren’t doing any good, eh?
The instant gratification crowd heard from, again.
I continue to contribute to FR because I have not found a better, more useful alternative. Perhaps the solution is a modest monthly charge. That would deal with the whiners and the trolls.
When service is interrupted, my main and only concern is to verify that it's not me or my computer, or my ISP. After that, since I do have a life, I go about my family and household needs and obligations. My stress level is usually low, even when I read about the latest outrage by our "Great Uniter."
As for the Freepathons, I contribute $30 per month automatically ($1 a day) so I can ignore them and have a clean conscience doing so. I am definitely getting my money's worth. I spend more than $1 a day getting coffee at Dunkin Donuts and sometimes I get a nasty cup of coffe that I have to throw away. Never with Free Republic, for just $1 a day, I get to read dozens of articles and opinions.
Cat-hoots?
all other pages are just fine except yahoo.pager and freerepublic.com
Really? I know what it takes to run servers. I'd give my right arm for the current FReepathon 375K budget to run my company's 50+ servers. I'm doing it for a fraction. Hell, a fraction of a fraction of that with a 99.9% uptime.
I've been here since '98 and have been a monthly donor for most of that time. FR has had more problems than any other site I've seen.
Here put this mouse suit on.
Obviously, anyone experience problems is not logged in and needs to set their beebers to stune.
GREAT TIME to add a couple bucks to the coffers. Don’t ever want this to be a permanent situation. Just a few bucks from each of us. HINT, HINT!!
Not sure it runs on just servers. Since you have been here for that long, you know the lawsuit problems and babysitting that has to be done to keep this site out of trouble. At any moment someone could come in and post a full NYT article and that would be it. Any excuse to shut it down and the libs would be all over it.
I think there has to be quite a crew working for peanuts or less following each post to every thread. 24/7/365.
Just thinking, not all machines.
I have no interest in your private life, but since you breached the subject, it's reasonable to expect better details. What's "a fraction of that?" Are you the sole attendant for the 50+ servers? If not, have you accounted for the salaries, government contributions and benefits of everyone who is? and have you included the cost of hardware replacement and software maintenance? or is that "contracted out?"
Finally, are you available 365/24/7 as moderator and gopher? Does your company require moderators?
Opening this thread and then this reply box were like lightning compared to what it's been the past couple months !
Ditto with the preview and post button functions !
Way to go John !
<knocks wood>
Yeah pretty much, unfortunately.
...Finally, are you available 365/24/7 as moderator and gopher?...
Yep.
But, if I remember right, the biggest expense was network bandwidth. The number of people using the forum multiplied by page refreshes, etc. yields a large number.
Yes, there have been some nagging uptime problems, but outages usually don't last long.
Jim Rob has been busy with another site. The FreeRepublic has to take a back seat. In preperation for Obama’s renomination Jim Rob has been creating www.WeWereOnceFree.com. On this site we will log stories of what it was once like so our children will know how badly we failed them ...
