While I understand that only a fraction of the population of this nation is directly affected by what you are about to read, I would never-the-less like to remind you that the remainder of the population is affected coincidentally. I can see the time cards now. Next it will be the amount of firing against the soldier, what type of firing, and if it was friendly fire or not. What a farce.
So, if a FOB is mortared, does everyone on the FOB get combat pay? Is it only for that month? Or is pro-rated to number of days of enemy contact? Since enemy contact typically doesn’t last more than a few seconds (IEDs, rockets, mortars), can they pro-rate it to those seconds? That would save some money right there.

This act of denying service men combat pay unless they’re shot at is dispicable. Our military put their lives on the line by being there. They receive little enough pay for what they do. Denying them this small amount of money for their families is the work of a demented person without honor.

Oh and I will state for the record I recvd combat zone pay when we ported (navy vet here) in the PI because the communist guerillas were acting up in the early 90s and I thought it was a farce - since I have tried to make amends for this fiasco as I felt it was an injustice for what it was intended. However, this boots on the ground denigration of our boys is beyond repulsive.

Our son returned from Afghanistan in June, 2011. Thankfully, he was whole, physically, but suffered a severe concussion when an IED took the 25 year old Platoon Leader’s legs and shattered his right arm. Our son was thrown back and hit his head. Our wonderful son had the presence of mind to be first to rush to his wounded friend and began First Aid. This was three weeks from coming home. When he first came home he was very emotionally damaged from PTSD. At Christmas when he came home he was better. The news last night is the Platoon leader is walking with prosthetic legs and Thank God his arm healed. Please keep prayers coming. This kind of change in policy is why we have to be resolute and make sure that Obama retires to private life on January 20, 3013!!!

After October 3rd that year, it became impossible to deny.
My nephew was home on leave in October when my mother died and he seemed normal. He’s a spook so sits in a room somewhere listening mostly, or whatever spooky things spooks do. But he was being sent out on patrols, too. He’s just a low ranking enlisted puke so who knows. If he told me what he was doing over there he’d probably have to kill me so I don’t ax.
This has been the stupidest time in my life. If this jack-ass gets back in office after November, I will be very disappointed in my Country.
If he gets re-elected, millions will be disgusted beyond words and we will see frustrations and deep anger expressed in many ways. People who love their country don’t go lightly into the night when it is being destroyed before their eyes.
Don’t let this happen.
I served with many Australian sailors who were treated this way after Vietnam - all the sailors on the troopship HMAS Sydney and her escorts were told they hadn’t served in Vietnam despite repeated trips there and sitting in Vung Tau harbour for days at a time within range of enemy mortar fire. It was a disgusting act by a cowardly government who just wanted to save money on pensions.
It took until the mid 1990s to fix it.
If you deploy into a situation where you can reasonably expect to be attacked, you deserve to be recognised as having served in a combat situation.

you are so very naive...if the IED doesn't go off....what's the threat. What if the IED you pass is a dud....why should we pay you combat pay when we have illegal immigrants who need food stamps.....where's your heart????
I can't talk about my missions either, but people like Tom Clancy and Bill Gertz will write about what he is doing about six months from now.
We know what this is about and it ain’t about saving money.

Calm down, everyone. Combat pay HAS changed. But not like this says. Originally, if you spent only 1 day in theater, you got combat pay for an entire month. They have changed to the member receiving a certain amount per day ($7.50), which will add up to exactly the combat pay amount you usually receive for the month ($225) if you are there the entire time. If you are only there for two days, then you only get 16 bucks. Our unit received this briefing, I’m just sourcing Snopes because its easier.
Truth be known, I like this change. There’s nothing more frustrating than when a ground pounder spends an entire month downrange and gets the same sum as guy who shows up for two or three days as a maintenance guy on a rotator. In fact, I’ve known people who intentionally delayed their return stateside to the 2nd of the month, to get an entire month of combat pay.
Although I agree with the overarching argument that the military is getting the raw end, this isn’t one of them. It pays people based on how long they are in theater.
