Santorum surges into the lead (National poll Santorum 38%, Romney 23%)
Public Policy Polling ^ | 02/11/2012 | Public Policy Polling

Riding a wave of momentum from his trio of victories on Tuesday Rick Santorum has opened up a wide lead in PPP's newest national poll. He's at 38% to 23% for Mitt Romney, 17% for Newt Gingrich, and 13% for Ron Paul.

Part of the reason for Santorum's surge is his own high level of popularity. 64% of voters see him favorably to only 22% with a negative one. But the other, and maybe more important, reason is that Republicans are significantly souring on both Romney and Gingrich. Romney's favorability is barely above water at 44/43, representing a 23 point net decline from our December national poll when he was +24 (55/31). Gingrich has fallen even further. A 44% plurality of GOP voters now hold a negative opinion of him to only 42% with a positive one. That's a 34 point drop from 2 months ago when he was at +32 (60/28).

I see this as a good thing in that the race keeps getting even more interesting. The race this far out might bore people by November but with this being such a horserace it keeps things interesting.

I hate to say it , but I don’t see anyone that is running beating Obama in November. The State of America no longer has any values ,has no morals and most of all no longer fears the lord Jesus Christ. the Muslim will win again and lead American down the road to hell. And at the end of the day it will still be Bush’s fault. You show me a democrat , I will show you A hell bound person.Intrade got Obama winning and over the last two elections they have been right on with everything. I hope I am wrong folks.

Has everyone here flunked reading comprehension? Excuse me but if you can’t read the original I’m not going to bother with a special post down level. Don’t like opinions, try a news site.

Not only cannot, but should not win. In a couple of weeks we’ll see why. Public perception of Santorum is largely negative even without vetting; just his image and other superficial factors will ruin his chances. (Truth hurts, Santorum fans; deal with it.) When his opponents begin to examine the details of his career, he will sink like a stone.

I read your original post. It sucked.

Santorum is not my favorite so I am not disturbed because you are “dissing” my specific favored candidate. I am disgusted because you are using slimy and dirty tactics to slam a decent candidate by insulting his family and appearances that you see due to your crap colored glasses.

Your “I’m the smartest person on the thread” arrogance is duly noted.

It looks like I’m a three time loser: Cain, Perry, Gingrich.

After the Cainplosion, I studied the rest and chose Santorum. I seriously considered Newt but I couldn’t get over his character / personality flaws. It wasn’t just his past, it was his psychological profile I couldn’t overlook. We need a steady, secure person in the WH.

“My main goal is to stop Romney, and Santorum appears to be the only one that can do that.”

My main goal is to stop Obama and Santorum appears not to be the one who can do that.

(Nice man though.)

The prancing dandy is Obama. Santorum is all man, and he is at least as conservative as I am.

Like it or not, those two things are what drive American Politics.

Santorum fans not only don't like it, they don't get it no matter how you tell it.

Voters are attentive to superficial things like appearance and stage presence. It's just a sad fact.

But in any case, here in PA we know that Rick Santorum's superficialities run quite deep ;)

Are you aware that Newt met wife no 1 when he was fifteen or sixteen. She was his Geometry teacher. She is the mother of his children and he won't say anything negative about her. She was in her mid twenties. We have laws against that now.

Wife no two has a sizable FBI file that says she is “mentally unstable” He stayed with her, both getting “help” until the decision to make the separation of six plus years final.

It was during the separation that he met his current wife.
IMO he deserves the love, support and spiritual partner that Callista has provided. We're all Americans so blessed.

So

a few enumerated "cuts" in it

Ooof. Sounds a bit lame in the face of multi-trillion-dollar debt. Huge tax cuts will help, but it feels like Gingrich is more impressed with what government can do than with what the America people can do with government off their backs and out of the way (Reagan's vision, message and life's work).

You Rick’sters have really screwed it up for all of us.

That is completely ridiculous. Most people have not even voted yet. What Rick has done is express his principles to those who have voted and they liked what they saw and heard from him. It is not up to us to “square away” a candidate. That is up to the candidate and staff themselves. If anyone has not been passing the mustard than that is the fault of ONLY the candidate and his staff. To blame the miraculous and incredibly great things happening with Santorum on us is great but not accurate. I am so honored you think so though.

That’s right, but the current “surge” for Santos is based on hype and seriously short on substance. Not only will he not win the nomination, God help us if something very stupid happens and he does! Obama will destroy him.

Rick was “good” on TARP because he wasn’t in elected office at the time.

It probably would have been a different story if he did hold office back in 2008.

One day, Obama pushed a button called “stimulus” and overnight we were in a trillion-dollar debt position.

What’s truly astonishing is none of these guys that I can tell (except Paul, who’s rightly called a “moonbat” for other reasons - Gingrich now is showing signs of life in his CPAC speech) are talking about CUTTING GOVERNMENT even though we are on the precipice of this multi-trillion-dollar debt abyss.

How is this possible? We MUST have tax cuts. But they cannot be sustained without MAJOR CUTS IN GOVERNMENT starting with CUTTING ENORMOUS WASTE, USELESS CABINET DEPARTMENTS (most of them), and A LOT OF “ENTITLEMENT PROGRAMS” (NOT defense, a legitimate government activity, even though our whole defense and intelligence capabilities need an overhaul because of 25 years of mismanagement since Reagan).

Santorum’s “balanced-budget” demand is of course suicide because the Leftists will use it as an excuse to raise taxes, the opposite of what needs to happen. There must be pressure to cut taxes and spending and that isn’t done with a balanced budget amendment but with sound fiscal policy. A balanced budget amendment is a bad idea because it doesn’t address our most critical political and economic problem: big government. It simply shifts the burden of the government’s budget mismanagement problem onto the backs of the American people.

Santorum offers a “balanced budget” instead of less government. That’s a terrible choice. How can we not have one guy with his head screwed on straight talking about this stuff? Maybe we really are in the Final Days and God is starting to allow things accordingly

I notice the usual suspects for Santorum love this PPP poll rather than attack PPP as a Dem polling firm like they normally do. I'm shocked. /s

This is the key takeaway from the PPP release: reason is that Republicans are significantly souring on both Romney and Gingrich.

As I said yesterday, and well before, with all the attacks ads and negative press focused elsewhere, Santorum is now the closest thing to "generic Republican" left because he's not vetted. His "surge" is mile wide and inch deep. It isn't earned, it's by default.

I almost look forward to Senator Sanctimonious' supporters wailing and gnashing of teeth when their sacred cow is gored on his big spender record, his pro-unionism, on his influence peddling for lobbyists both before and after he was throw out by voters, on his failed law career, on his perpetual petulance, his deep establishment ties, his neocon interventionism, on his contempt for the 10th amendment, on his personal hypocrisy, on his frank views against women...

He is a target rich environment without the record of accomplishment to back up his self-puffery.

His supporters are bamboozled by his SoCon rhetoric. I hope his true colors are revealed and he isn't followed down the rat hole before it's too late to stop Romney with the right candidate.

As they're both establishment creatures I expect Romney will toy with him, rather than go for the kill.

If Gingrich or Santorum drops out, Romney would run away with it. They both need to stay in to stop Romney.

They way I see it Gingrich will sweep through the South. Romney will sweep through the North East. Santorun is running out in front in the Midwest and West. In the end, none of them have enough delegates to win it. Then Santorun and Grich hammer out the details and joing forces at the convention and run as a ticket. (Only problem is who gets the top spot?)
