Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s … a drone, and it’s watching you. That’s what privacy advocates fear from a bill Congress passed this week to make it easier for the government to fly unmanned spy planes in U.S. airspace.
The FAA Reauthorization Act, which President Obama is expected to sign, also orders the Federal Aviation Administration to develop regulations for the testing and licensing of commercial drones by 2015.

This... this is bad. I think we're far beyond the point of no return, folks. Once these are in the air, any attempts at revolution will be futile, IMO.
Some talented person or person need to devise and application for smartphones: “Droen Finder”.
Maybe have it listen for the drone’s radio transmissions to pinpoint the source, or maybe use a built in microphone to listen for the distintive souind of its engine.

I have just looked over the Senate version and here is the passage - Under Title VI: Aviation Research
(Sec. 607) Authorizes the FAA Administrator to: (1) arrange with the NAS to assess unmanned aircraft systems; and (2) establish three two-year cost-shared pilot projects in sparsely populated, low-density Class G air traffic airspace new test sites to conduct developmental work and service testing to improve unmanned aircraft for safe integration into the National Airspace System. Authorizes appropriations for FY2010-FY2011.
Directs the FAA Administrator to make available on the FAA’s website a five-year “roadmap” for introduction of unmanned aircraft systems into the National Airspace System.
You would not believe the scope of this thing - the sole purpose of this piece of legislation is to grow the Government and to do it fast, while providing special exemptions for special people who promised to vote for it if they “got theirs”.
What a mess.
It is a document that can fry your brain and enrage you simultaneously folks.

Consider military video you may have seen from Iraq/Afghanistan where some bad guys are running across a road to plant an IED or some such thing.
Weather likely isn’t an impediment. These drones use both line of sight, infrared, and likely even thermal cameras, so trying to duck one or hoping that inclement weather puts a damper on their spying is just a pipe dream.
Especially the kinds that can remotely drop missiles, or fire sniper rifles.

Who owns the airspace over the US? Serious question and I think I know the answer. I think what I am getting at is whether or not individual states can impose airspace restrictions.

If there isn’t enough intestinal fortitude to eliminate the cameras at traffic stops ... i dont think that there is the will to get rid of drones.

Not much harm in that one. It is what is coming years down the road that is hazardous to freedom.
Class G airspace is uncontrolled airspace, not unregulated, but uncontrolled. What they want to do is setup a Yuma or White Sands type of area someplace to allow testing of commerical drones. Right now there just isn’t anywhere they are allowed to do that, everything is in a military reservation.

Posse Comitatus essentially forbids the Federal government from calling up the US military for domestic purposes. Obama’s already promised a new sort of “security detail” for America, and I’d bet the farm that this is step #1 in that implementation.
America’s dominated all of the wars in which She’s engaged because she owned the air and the sea. If the Feds own the air with drones, any attempts by civilians to rise against the Federal government will be met with drone attacks.
This is checkmate, really. I’ve seen the post that answers “what good is one citizen with a gun against an army?” That answers the question for ground operations, but owning the air... I’d like to see a corollary to that.

I’m not just worried about the government drones — I’m kinda worried about the Google drone too. ;-)
Depends on the drone. Some fly very high and can see through the cloud cover. Others can only fly in calm weather at low altitudes.
They’ve already got the work-around on that one, the proposal is for commercial drones. That means somebody besides the military. What I can’t seem to find anywhere is the justification for this. We won’t secure a border, but we will put thousands of drones into the air, to secure what, exactly?
I disagree that this is checkmate. There isn’t any information yet that drones will be armed. And, Afghanistan is an example of what committed people, no matter how wrong, can stand up to this kind of technology. Despite drones and all the other technology we are bringing to bear, we will end up leaving that place just as the Russians did.
To secure THEIR control of us, of course.

I think my greatest concern is once the first civilian is killed by a military drone, public support for the military, in general, will plummet, leading to chaos in the streets.
I support our military men and women with 100% of my heart and soul. Why they haven’t stood up en masse to this dictator in DC is completely beyond comprehension.

Drones are dependent on their ground based pilots, communications, and having a place to return too.
Still its a significant advantage when seeking to control a population. They’ve already used drones in South Dakota (maybe North) during an investigation of cattle theft.

Just wow. I just got the Kindle addition of the first book of his series, Enemies Foreign and Domestic. So many things he’s writing about have come true just in the last couple of years. I’m just feeling more and more that we’ve been sold down the river, not just by Obama but by Clinton and even Bush (I’ve never said anything bad about Bush but either he knew what he was doing or was extremely naive about the Patriot Act when someone talked him into it.)
Would anyone have a list of links on FR of the several bills that have been enacted just in the last few months? I can’t remember the names, but the new law where U.S. citizens can be detained without trial, then there is S.O.P.A and the other similar internet bill (I think they were killed but may come back to life again soon).
Someone who is good at writing reviews should make a list and put them into a review of Travis’ books. I’m personally going to send this out to friends and relatives along with recommendations to read his book. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!
You are absolutely wrong, WHP Whiteman airport is in the middle of the San Fernando Valley and when the tower is closed fro 8pm to8 am it is Class G airspace, along with airspace in virtually All Cities. Get some charts and you will se what I mean, Hell Downtown LA is Class G Airspace.
