Santorum Sweeps
Red State ^ | 02/08/12 | Leeon H. Wolf

As of today, Rick Santorum officially has no more delegates than he had yesterday. That said, as CNN is just now this moment calling Colorado for Santorum in a stunning upset, his clean sweep of the states who voted/caucused today is a stunning rebuke to both Romney’s purported march through February and Newt Gingrich’s position as the favored not-Romney candidate.

Santorum’s performance was impressive in each state, vastly outperforming his position in the polls, which had him losing by 9 points in Colorado (he won by 5) and winning by only 9 in Minnesota (he won by 18). It is hard to tell who got clobbered worse – Romney, who fell all the way to third in Minnesota, or Gingrich, who finished well behind the flailing Romney in every state. Newt Gingrich didn’t even bother to give a speech tonight, which was probably a good idea if Romney’s shell-shocked and confused concession was any indication of what we could have expected. Although Santorum didn’t get any official delegates tonight, he certainly has bought himself one heck of a news cycle, and has in one day sucked the oxygen out of virtually every other campaign with the stunning results.

Santorum pulled off a stunning hat trick, winning all three contests held yesterday. He destroyed both Romney's 'aura of inevitability' and the idea of Newt as the only viable 'non-Romney' candidate.

Newt has been arguing for weeks that we need 1 conservative to face Romney who can win and the other should bow out of the race to make way for a conservative victory. Santorum showed that he's THE viable conservative in this race. Will Newt follow his own advice?

The polls just didn’t try hard enough to skew these three primaries. They’ll try to do better in the future.

Willard has a real problem. When the polls say he has the nomination all wrapped up, his voters don’t bother to show up, and yesterday’s numbers are the result.

When and under what circumstances did Aldo Santorum naturalize?

Pretty remarkable when just last week Mittens led Rick by 11% in Colorado. His facade of inevitability is crumbling. And where is Newt? His campaign has imploded.

Ruh Roh? Little Ricky as he is so affectionately called by many on here FR, is LOOSE! Newt has been enjoying the benefit of the idea that he is the only viable non-Romney up until now. I remember hearing a number of Florida voters that said they really liked Santorum, but they voted Newt for fear of Romney. Newt will be back in the South, but he's going to have to earn more of his votes now vs. being the non-Romney check off box.

“If the night was good for Santorum, it was grim for Gingrich, who made scant effort in any of the states that voted during the day. He ran far off the pace in both caucus states, forced to watch from the sidelines while Santorum boasted of being the candidate with conservative appeal.”

Wonder if the Newtrinos are now going to call on Ginrich to drop out and back Santorum, like they called on Santorum to drop out for the Salamander?

Full disclosure: I’m not backing ANY of the Four Horsemen for President.

So, Eddie Haskell Santorum had a pretty good night.

We'll see. If he could just dump the "Punk" attitude.

Santorum and the media that have jumped on his bandwagon seems to forget that he WAS CRUSHED in SC and Florida. He campaigned in both states. Newt Gingrich beat Romney by 12 percentage points in SC, inspite of Romney spending millions in negative campaign ads against him. No one ran ads against Santorum and he was still crushed. Same thing in Florida. Santorum is a Northerner. A big spending Northerner who does not play well in the South. Last night was an impressive win for him, but it was not in the South. Newt Gingrich was not on the ballot in Missouri, if he had been I suspect he would have finished well. The only way Santorum could possibly carry a Southern state would be for Newt Gingrich to get out and endorse him. Southerners would vote for him them. They wouldn’t be too enthusiastic about it, but he’s 1000 times better than Romney, who is still despised by the average republican voter, especially in the South. Gingrich or Santorum can beat Obama. Willard the liberal can not. Let’s see how Faux News and Karl Rove spin last night’s crushing defeat for their favorite liberal.

Perspective:
Total turn out all three states combined last night: 365,000

Total turn out South Carolina alone? Over 600 thousand.

Turn out last night Versus 2008: DOWN 50%.

Turn out was UP in MN. You forgot to mention that! Since Newt came in 4th in CO and MN I guess it's safe to assume that his supporters are the one's who stayed home.

Newt has won ONE contest. Just ONE. In fact, he's only been a factor of any note at all in just ONE contest.

Time to pack it up Newt.

Santorum was deprived of any momentum out of Iowa because of the muddle with the votes in Iowa and intervening expected NH win for Mitt. Newt also enjoyed the benefit of a backlash against the lib media because they brought out his Ex in the week prior, and he punted it back in their faces in the debates. Before last night I think you also had the same backlash effect because of the Catholic healthcare issue with Obama and the court decision on homosexual marriage that gave Santorum the bump yesterday. Santorum may be regional, but so is Newt. I would say Santorum has an edge many don't see, he's very good at the retail level. Some pundits say the pause before super Tuesday will suck Santorum’s momentum. I think it will be the opposite because it will give him time to do retail. He'll be stronger because of the pause.

Want to know why voter turnout is down? Simple, folks are turned off by Newt Gingrich & Mitt Romney and their childish squabbles and personal attacks. The real objective of defeating POTUS Barack Hussein Obama has fallen by the wayside, and...no enthused GOP primary voter gives one hoot about Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich!!!

Fact is, Gingrich is toast. He is going nowhere!!! And....Mitt Romney is close behind. If Romney does not change and try the same act on Santorum, he too, will become toast. IMHO, the GOP is better off with both these two losers out of the race!!! The rank and file, Republicans, Conservatives, Independents, etc. that come out and vote in the caucuses & primaries want candidates that aggressively attack with facts, the destructive America destroyer Obama and his anti-American Democrat Party. With their infighting, Gingraich & Romney have their voters, their political party and...more importantly, their country!! Go Santorum!!!
