Polls: Santorum in First Place in Minnesota, Second in Colorado
The Weekly Standard ^ | February 5, 2012 | JOHN MCCORMACK

Public Policy Polling surveys Tuesday's caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado and finds good news for Rick Santorum:

Last night's results in Nevada were bad news for Newt Gingrich and PPP's first day of polling in Colorado and Minnesota indicates things may only get worse for him in the coming days.

In Colorado Mitt Romney looks primed for another big Western win to match his one in Nevada. He leads with 40% there to 26% for Rick Santorum, 18% for Gingrich, and 12% for Ron Paul.

Minnesota looks like a toss up with any of the four candidates having some shot at winning. Santorum holds a small edge there with 29% to 27% for Romney, 22% for Gingrich, and 19% for Paul.

What both states have in common is that Gingrich has fallen precipitously since our last polls in them. In Colorado Gingrich was in first place with a 19 point lead in early December. His support has declined 19 points since then and his net favorability has dropped 33 points from +41 (64/23) to only +8 (49/41). Gingrich has had a similarly large decline in Minnesota, but there it's much more abrupt. We polled the state only two weeks ago but in that time he's dropped 14 points from 36% to 22%, and his favorability has 26 points from +34 (59/25) to +8 (47/39). That after glow from South Carolina has worn off real fast.

I'd love to see Rick beat Romney in both these states.

The only thing Santorum accomplishes, is to split the conservative vote, keeping Gingrich from being able to beat Romney, and with Romney as the nominee, ensuring a second term for Obama.

Some conservative Santorum is — more like an Obama pawn! :(

Go, Santorum! When I get home and am not on hotel wifi, I will give another donation! Anyone feeling likeminded, please do the same! Skip a latte or a burger! We’ve got a country to save!

Santorum is leading Newt in those states. Maybe Newt should drop out and support Santorum, for the good of the party.

[Last night’s results in Nevada were bad news for Newt Gingrich]

NO THEY WEREN’T! Newt performed better than expected and Romney performed worse than expected even though Mormon Romney supporters made up 26% of the vote! The media was pulling for Paul to take second like he did in 2008 but Newt did! The Mittwitt media spin is truly nauseating! I don’t appreciate their attempts to manipulate me anymore than I do the state run media’s.

Which part of “Santorum has ZERO chance of getting the R nomination, and assuming he miraculously did, he would have ZERO, actually negative chance of beating Obama”, don’t you understand?

Santorum is just splitting the conservative vote, keeping Newt from beating Romney.

And as I said, Santorum is helping Romney get the GOP nomination by his actions and attacks on Newt — and those voting for Santorum are contributing to this outcome.

And with Romney as the GOP nominee, Obama will get reelected. Bookmark this post.

Ditto!!! I think Rick Santorum is going to be the Romney alternative. Newt Gringrich, after his miserable debate performances in Florida and his continuing “sour grapes mantra” is not the “One” IMHO!!! I supported Newt, but...have switched to Santorum.

Newt had this thing locked up, but.....he blew it big time in Florida!!! The press conference he held last night was terrible, all over the place!!!

He is not stable, not focused, mean, not humble at all, and has his eyes on his own ego rather then the future of the USA!!! Gingrich is not POTUS material. He would be the same egomaniac as Obama is!!! Sad.....but true!!!

Minnesota is completely irrelevant to the nominating process. We take a non-binding straw poll at the carcases next Tuesday. The results get sent to the head office where they are thrown into the waste basket.

“Santorum needs to put his country before his ego and drop out.”

I couldn’t agree with you more. Unfortunately he is not doing that.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Obama and Romney are both contributing to his campaign (in some non-traceable circuitous road, no doubt), to keep splitting the conservative vote, handing the GOP nomination to Romney and a second term to Obama.

Romney will be worse than McCain in a match up with Obama.

Conservatives supporting Santorum are detached from reality, if they can’t see this. They must have a death-wish for conservatism and the USA — a second term for Obama will mean a near total destruction of the US, as the “land of the free”.

DO SOMETHING!! Newt’s National Phone Banks open at 1 pm MT on Sunday into Colorado...

They are aiming for 10,000 calls in the next two days...

Please help and don’t be afraid, even if you are shy. You get a little script, and after the first or second call, it is as easy as anything. The people all over this forum who talk alot about supporting Newt, could do something very productive by making calls for him. It frees up the boots there locally...

The people here are very passionate and persuasive and SMART - you could have double the net effect of most callers... PLEASE MAKE THE CALLS...

4 states in a row lost not even any counties won in those 4 states last in NV has not won one voting bloc, not even Catholics uses little money he has to make AD’s attacking Newt. and he hasn't even been attacked by anyone. Newt is second, had the establishment,Drudge, FOX, etc all after him In second place. won the conservative voting bloc won other voting blocs won nearly all SC won more counties than Romney in FL Should by the rules have delegates from here why would anyone say to you that the seoond place guy should drop out and let the last guy in is beyond me also we will see at the end of this who Santorum endorses and if he goes for Romney then we will know for sure then how some were fooled even after it has been pointed out time after time what is happening and how the vote is being split However maybe Santorum thinks he can get a state where Gingrich is not one and then thinks he will get that bounce in the , er , well, er, , er
