Starting in September, schools in Litchfield will no longer get Jewish holidays off.

In a 5-to-3 vote, the school boar ruled not to observe Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Supporters say it's a fair decision to the majority of students who are not Jewish.

Opponents say it's creating a sense of intolerance.

According to a school board member who voted against the measure, Litchfield schools were once called out for not being culturally sensitive enough. She argues this latest measure is proof of that.

"Litchfield once again demonstrates its lack of cultural sensitivity and lack of flexibility when it comes to respecting the need of minority population families to balance ethnic and religious views with the demands of a rigorous education," Jenkins said.

Jewish students who take off during those holidays will get an excused absence, but some parents say that is not the only problem.

They say teachers schedule exams or major assignments right around that time and their children have to fight to catch up.

Most schools don't expressly say time off is due to a religious holiday, i.e "winter break" instead of "Christmas vacation."

Secondly, I have had plenty of exams and projects scheduled to be due or require work near Christian holidays in middle/high school and College.

As long as the school does not penalize students, who needs this time off to honour their faith, I’m ok with it.

Same goes for all religious holidays. If you need it off, take it off. Schools should not penalize students for this. But it is the responsibility of the students to bear their homework load when they take these days off.

I guarantee you that Litchfield schools will openly discriminate against both Christian and Jewish students. They will not blink a second when it comes to making sure all students are indoctrinated with Sharia law and sensitivity to our Muslim “betters.” That’s what Leftie teacher’s unions and school board enablers do. I live in Litchfield County about five miles from the center of Litchfield. The town is loaded with limousine liberals. Most weekends you will see New York plates on the cars parked around the center of town. There use to be anti war protesters there on the weekends but they disappeared when Bush left office.

Back in the day the Jewish kids just stayed out of school. Everyone knew it was their holiday. No one really gave it two thoughts. They did not miss much, and no one was punished for missing the days.

Why does everything have to be so complicated and full of drama.

If there is one thing certain about American Libs and the Left, they have made an unholy alliance with the Muslims. Libs and the Left have bestowed their holiest titles upon the poor Muslims — the title of “victim.” Being a victim absolves the recipient of all things and demonizes all who oppose the agenda. In this case the destruction of the American Republic and bringing all Americans under the new worldwide Muslim caliphate.

If the Muslims don't get special consideration now, they will soon. It difficult to measure how many Jewish people actually live in Litchfield and therefore how many people are affected because no one here records demographics according to religion.

They'll know this year when they see how many kids stay home. Most schools with large Jewish attendance close those days because kids staying home costs state aid based on attendance days. Better to have class days with normal attendance. Presuming enough Jewish students to close on these days to begin with, it's an odd decision.

I had excused absences for Jewish holidays and never found it a problem in grade school. I fail to see the big deal or why this is worth posting. If they refused to allow excused absences for a holiday, that would be a story.
