Updated: Jan 28, 2012 5:24 AM EST

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Democrats are gathering for 1 of their seasonal dinners and fundraisers at a time of party upheaval after Gov. Beverly Perdue announced she wouldn't seek a second term.

The North Carolina Democratic Party expected more than 500 people at Saturday evening's Sanford Hunt Frye dinner at a Greensboro hotel. The event takes on added significance as several Democrats consider whether to run in the party's gubernatorial primary.

She's behind in the polls. My guess - she'll need her loot for the lawsuits.

I think you can bank on the PTB had already talked to her about stepping aside, and have a candiate in mind to take her place. She didn’t decide to drop a bomb on the Dems.

I guess the state didn’t want to “suspend” the election for a couple years?

I think the Durham AG is free. Perhaps she’ll run

As I understand it, Charlotte, NC Mayor Foxx (who happens to be black) will be speaking at the DNC convention. He has been selected by Obama to run for Governor to help Obama win NC a second time. It’s THE PLAN. Purdue was kicked to the curb.

Pat McCrory, the past Mayor of Charlotte, is the republican front runner. He is not real conservative, but he’ll do.

Corruption. She's an underling of former governor Easley (FELON-NC). Notice she hasn't said anything other than she isn't running? Very peculiar.

Ya, she doesn’t like the idea that people in public office have to run for election. So, she has decided not to run, not subject herself to that public examination of her accomplishments (if any), and her plans if re-elected. The whole process is beneath her, so good riddance.

Don’t be shocked if they move their convention to Wisconsin!

1972 was the only other time I can think of that a party moved its convention (Republicans switched from San Diego to Miami Beach - only about 3 months before).

The only cities with enough hotel space to accommodate a large convention like this at the last minute used to be Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Miami Beach - not sure if that’s still true or not.

I've worked with Pat (professionally, not politics) and no he is not real conservative but would be good for NC and is conservative when it counts.

Obama was very quick to publicly give accolades for the fine work Bev has done and gave her warm, well-wishes. That tells me right there that she was given the boot. She can’t win and the Democrat mob will put in someone else they think can.

I figured she dropped out because she expects to be indicted for something later.
