Tired and broke, Santorum heads home to do taxes

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) — Rick Santorum is tired, almost broke — and going home.

The former Pennsylvania senator is taking a pause from Florida campaigning just days before the Tuesday primary that even he expects to deal him a third consecutive loss.

Santorum says he would rather spend his Saturday sitting at his kitchen table doing his taxes than campaigning in a state where the race for the Republican presidential nomination has become a two-man fight between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

The cash-strapped candidate acknowledges that he simply can't keep up with the GOP front-runners in Florida.

"We're going to talk about the Constitution and talk about being a strong conservative," Santorum said at an event here this week. "And that's all we can do."

Outside advisers are urging him to pack up in Florida completely and not spend another minute in a state where he is cruising toward a loss. But Santorum insisted on Friday that he would return once he has readied his taxes for public release.

"You are very naive to believe that. Whoever has the media, has the votes. All your vote says you believe the propaganda....I'm voting against their propaganda."

Yeah, that Santorum propoganda machine has really been in high gear lately...

It's funny that you appeal to the memory of those who willingly died for this country while tearing down Santorum. Many of those who purchased our vote with their lives found themselves in "unwinnable" situations, yet they did not compromise their ideals, consult polls to figure out what to do, or even listen to those who might have urged them to surrender. By not voting one's true beliefs, one is doing them and their sacrifice a huge disservice, IMHO.

If the minutemen at Lexington, or the soldiers at Valley Forge adopted your attitude and decided to bow out because things looked unwinnable, you wouldn't have a vote to cast.

I really would like to think otherwise, but it looks and smells very rotten to me, especially after the gang up on Newt earlier in the week.

The dems AND the ROVE Country Club RINOs are scared to death of what the Tea Party backed Newt POTUS could and IMHO WOULD do!!

"Thank you Rick voters-you will give us Romney."

If Romney wins the nomination, it will be due to one reason: a long string of also-rans, when they had center stage and almost all of the debate time, failed (for whatever reason) to attack Romney on Romneycare. Romney was allowed to skate through with a campaign that should have been DOA...

I don't know if Santorum can get back the traction at this point, but Mark Levin was right last night- Santorum won the last debate and he was the only one to hammer Romney on this crucial issue. If you want to land a knock-out punch, you have to attack your opponent's greatest vulnerability- it's too bad so many other Republican candidates have failed to realize this.

I know how Santorum is considered a RINO and all but he still looks like the best guy in the race although they are all head and shoulders above Barky.

You are 100% correct that Rick Santorum is “tired”. He keeps a schedule that would leave Milt, Newt, or me for that matter, dead within a week.
GO RICK 2012!! Bob

Rick lacks patriotism? If it were not for Rick, the last two debates, only the second and third that I’ve seen, would have been dull- and stupid(Paul)-fests. Rick was the only one who prevented the four hours from straying into silliness. I thought the he attacked Milt extremely hard, and helped Gingrich, and himself. Bob

Rick made a good effort. He can’t afford to go broke over a campaign. He has a large family to support.

I hope the eventual nominee will give Rick a nod for VP.

Rick Santorum is not a selfish man.

It is slanderous to say so.

If you don’t like Newt Gingrich, you’d better learn to like him fast.

We’ve kicked everyone else to the curb and that’s after 3 states.

I like Gingrich and he has been my second choice for over a year.

In fact I'd really like to see him head a ticket with Palin.

Bill,

In the three months you’ve been here, you have about as much credibility as the gum I scrape off my shoe after an unfortunate incident at the grocery store. In fact, after I flick it off my shoe, I call it a “Romney”. Less offensive than something someone hocked up, but still a germ-filled booger nonetheless.

Wow FRiend it seems we got off to a bad start. Yes I joined free Republic only three months ago but at some point you were new on this site also. I only hope you didn’t run into an a$$ hat like yourself when you started posting. What you think of My credibility means nothing to me, in fact coming from a clown like you, your lack of trust reaffirms my positions.
