Tired and broke, Santorum heads home to do taxes

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) — Rick Santorum is tired, almost broke — and going home.

The former Pennsylvania senator is taking a pause from Florida campaigning just days before the Tuesday primary that even he expects to deal him a third consecutive loss.

Santorum says he would rather spend his Saturday sitting at his kitchen table doing his taxes than campaigning in a state where the race for the Republican presidential nomination has become a two-man fight between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

The cash-strapped candidate acknowledges that he simply can't keep up with the GOP front-runners in Florida.

"We're going to talk about the Constitution and talk about being a strong conservative," Santorum said at an event here this week. "And that's all we can do."

Outside advisers are urging him to pack up in Florida completely and not spend another minute in a state where he is cruising toward a loss. But Santorum insisted on Friday that he would return once he has readied his taxes for public release.

I don’t know if it is true that if Willard wins in Florida, his path to the nomination is secure, but if that ends up being true, Rick Santorum’s refusing to leave Florida and ask his supporters to support Newt, will have given Willard the nomination, and barack the presidency. He is taking a big gamble... maybe he doesn’t see it that way, maybe he doesn’t care...

I’m surprised he doesn’t use a tax program like H R Block to do his taxes.

I don’t expect Santorum to be in the race much longer. We are now down to the point where ‘money talks,’ Romney has plenty of it; Newt’s hanging in ok.

BUT, as a presidential candidate, I would personally go through every last check, charge slip, bank account, etc. before I turned them over to an accountant for eventual public release. The public won’t pay that much attention, but our fearless media will take them apart line by line.

does he not have a right to run?

Calling you out as a huge concern troll - five or so posts since you joined in September 2011 - appeared to support Newt and now in the homestretch you've had a change of heart. *sniffles*

There is an official protocol that you just don’t decline an invitation to the White House. However, GHWB and Jeb could have insisted on there being no photos if there were a serious reason for the meeting.

Poor Santorum. He would be the best candidate considering his moral compass and integrity.
But as a foreigner I want a strong United states of America. That will prevent Iran from having WMD. And newt I believe will do that.

People that worry are not trolls. It is between Newt and Romney. American could do better than that. A real conservative that does not have a lot of baggage. I hate that I am quoting a Romney AD. But Sarah should run, Bobby Jindal , I am sure there are lots of other good candidates.

"Thank you Rick voters-you will give us Romney."

I'm really getting tired of this intellectually lazy and worn out canard. Of course I can only speak for myself, but nobody "takes" or "steals" my vote; they earn it. If Newt doesn't receive the votes necessary to beat Romney in FL, it's not because Santorum or Paul "stole" votes from him. It will be because Newt didn't earn or win them.

You may allow your vote to be "stolen" from one candidate by another, but not all of us are that careless with ours.

I have a not so high income ( ha.) and I have an accountant to do my taxes...I just don’t get this...Can you say “delegate”?? and his wifey has a law degree.

Someone has to prove that Republicans have more brains than Democrats - I bet he gets it right even without Turbo Tax.

Newt was praising Rick on Hannity yesterday. He’s very upbeaat and confident. It’s almost like he knows something the rest of us don’t know. LIke a magician about ready to pull out a rabbit from his hat. I’m wondering if the joke is on us, and Newt knows Santorum is dropping out.

No kidding Rick but you couldn't let go. If mitt wins FL, santorum stock drops due to a lack of patriotism.

Yes he does and glad he did but Patriotism tells you when to drop out but ego keeps one in. His ego trumps patriotism.

In four? America wants him gone in ONE. Now I understand your vote for someone who has no chance of winning. Yeah, troll fits.

WOW! A Barry campaign photo op! Wonder who he’s trying to impress. GOP E and the ‘rat party have combined their resources and now one big gov’t socialist party. Well, now they are just being open about it.

Don't forget that other extreme ego, Ron Paul. In a tight Florida count, the total votes of Santorum and Paul probably will spell doom for Newt.

Neither appears to have the guts OR the glory to withdraw to help save our Republic.

On another thread a freeper posted he's a supporter of Ron Paul for president "even though he's a little whacky".

I give up!
