Tired and broke, Santorum heads home to do taxes

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (AP) — Rick Santorum is tired, almost broke — and going home.

The former Pennsylvania senator is taking a pause from Florida campaigning just days before the Tuesday primary that even he expects to deal him a third consecutive loss.

Santorum says he would rather spend his Saturday sitting at his kitchen table doing his taxes than campaigning in a state where the race for the Republican presidential nomination has become a two-man fight between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

The cash-strapped candidate acknowledges that he simply can't keep up with the GOP front-runners in Florida.

"We're going to talk about the Constitution and talk about being a strong conservative," Santorum said at an event here this week. "And that's all we can do."

Outside advisers are urging him to pack up in Florida completely and not spend another minute in a state where he is cruising toward a loss. But Santorum insisted on Friday that he would return once he has readied his taxes for public release.

Rick is doing the right thing.

This sends a very strong signal to the 9% that would have voted for him to select a winner from the other 3.

I'm CERTAIN none of Rick's votes will go to Paul and the potential emerges for the first 50% +1 winner.

I like Rick a lot.

I’d like him even more if he dropped out and threw all of his support to Gingrich.

He said on Hannity tonight that they are very happy with the way the campaign is going and he’s not dropping out. Neat.

Hey Rick...

“A recent study shows that U.S. taxpayers waste an astounding $431.1 billion annually on tax compliance. That means that we pay about 30 percent of our total income taxes Washington receives, just to be able to pay them! How large is $431.1 billion? Its more than the dollar value of all the goods and services produced in 42 individual states, such as Michigan or Virginia and even the nation of Saudi Arabia!” Support the FairTax!

God Bless you RIck Santorum. Get those taxes done and release them and then get back to bashing the heck out of Romney.

“I like Rick a lot.I’d like him even more if he dropped out and threw all of his support to Gingrich.”

That’s what I was hoping for as well but at last night’s debate I got the feeling that Rick was auditioning for Romney’s VP spot. That would really disappoint me...and it still wouldn’t make me vote for Mittens!

He must be physically exhausted, and he doesn’t get coddled the way the other candidates do. How to show that fire when you are living on energy drinks. Except he did very well indeed when he went toe to toe with Romney. His ego is not as brittle as Newt’s.

He said last night to Greta that he was going home to do his tax thing and hoped to have them out by Tuesday.
Poor bugger prolly just wants to see his kids and sleep in his own bed.

This is like “Kim Kardashian Politics”

All speculation , all of the time!

He’s auditioning to be either Romney or Gingrich’s VP. He’s just waiting to be bought off.

"Poor bugger prolly just wants to see his kids and sleep in his own bed."

I'm sure he does.

But if he had money, or a shot at double digits he would be barnstorming.

He knows it's over and will announce either shortly before or shortly after FLA.

Romney would pay millions and offer any office to ensure it's AFTER FLA.

Someone should let him know about H&R Block? I like Rick but this is pretty selfish if he is really serious about getting a Conservative nominated.

Pray for America

that’s sure not what he said on Hannity...”we’re in great shape”, “lots of money”, “really like where we’re at”, “in it for the long long term”...etc.

Spinmaster Rick

Sorry, this is weak. He has until April 15th to do his taxes, just like everybody else. He has been a true disappointment lately. Does anyone REALLY believe he’s leaving the campaign trail to either get his taxes off his home computer or do them himself at the risk of his campaign? I guess so.

What a shame. The last social conservative left and I’ll nearly bet he won’t be back on the campaign trail.

I hope, like others, that what supporters he had will now support Gingrich. We do NOT need Myth to win.

I actually believe that there are a few of us left that understand the concept of
“integrity” and “principle”.
He’s been barnstoming as you say for several months as you sayl

Romney would buy the Universe if he could, but like BHO, doesnn’t mean that we have to give up and let that happen.

JMHO.

They ALL say that up until the 2 min before their presser to declare they are “suspending” their campaign.

I think they are all probably tired. The political seasons start 2 years in advance now. It;s hard and expensive. Seems like just a few years ago, things didn’t even start until Feb of the election year. Now we are doing 2 dozen debates before Feb.
